You grind straight into it, the grounds land in the basket instead of on the drip tray, and after distributing you lift the ring off again with two fingers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe opening flares out towards the top like a funnel and so also catches grounds that would otherwise fall next to the basket. At the bottom, the ring hangs on the outside of the basket rim, so it takes up no space in the basket.
