Mazzer Philos – Single-Dose Grinder with 64mm Flat Burrs
You place the weighed dose into the hopper and press the button. The asynchronous motor draws calmly and deeply – no high-pitched screeching, hardly any vibration. The vertically mounted 64mm flat burrs work together with an auger that feeds the beans evenly into the grinding discs. The grounds fall directly down into the magnetic 58mm dosing cup, an integrated dose finisher retrieves the last crumbs. What remains is almost nothing: retention is under half a gram, with the vertical burrs it drops to around 0.1 grams.
The Mazzer Philos is a "light commercial" category single-dose grinder – built for those who switch between espresso, filter, and batch brew without purging between beans. Coffee Coaching Club is a Mazzer partner and offers the Philos in two burr profiles and two housing colors (black, silver). Mazzer has been handcrafting in Scorzè near Venice since 1948.
Vertical Burrs and Auger Feed
The core of the Philos are 64mm flat burrs, mounted vertically rather than horizontally. Together with the auger feed, the beans are fed into the grinding discs at a consistent speed – this ensures a constant particle distribution and reduces "popcorning," which causes uneven grinding in many single-dose grinders. Because the grounds fall directly downwards due to gravity, hardly anything remains in the chamber. Flat burrs generate more heat than conical ones at the same speed; Mazzer has matched the motor and speed profile to single-dose quantities, so the temperature remains stable during grinding.
Two Burr Profiles: I200D and I189D
The Philos is available with two different 64mm flat burr profiles, both made from factory-seasoned stainless steel and manufactured in Italy:
I200D – Clarity and Balance
Designed for clarity in the cup: clearly separated fruit and floral notes, balanced, pleasant acidity, and medium body. Ideal for light to medium roasts and filter.
I189D – Body and Texture
Designed for a full, velvety mouthfeel: rich body, deep sweetness, notes of chocolate and nut. Ideal for classic Italian espresso and medium to dark roasts.
Which profile is installed ex works depends on the selected variant. The I200D burrs are also available individually from us if you want to switch between profiles later.
Adjustment: Stepped or Stepless
The Philos has a dual-mode adjustment: In stepped mode, the grind setting clicks into fine 6-micron steps – this makes settings repeatable, allowing you to reliably find your reference point again. In stepless mode, you adjust continuously. This allows you to set espresso in the morning and switch to pour-over in the afternoon without losing your espresso setting.
Workflow and Maintenance
The magnetic 58mm dosing cup snaps into place under the spout, and the integrated dose finisher (knocker) neatly retrieves the last crumbs. The grinding chamber is tool-free accessible: remove the front plate, loosen two wing nuts, remove the burrs – no recalibration is necessary afterwards. An anti-static design keeps the work surface clean, and noise damping and low operating frequency keep the grinder quiet. The power cable disappears into its own compartment.
Mazzer since 1948
Mazzer has been building coffee grinders since 1948 in Scorzè near Venice and develops grinders and burrs entirely in-house. The Philos' housing is made of stainless steel, brass, and anodized aluminum, and its clean-lined design is inspired by the Mazzer ZM. At around 12.5 kg, the grinder stands firmly and quietly on the work surface.

Who it's For
The Philos is for anyone who wants single-dosing and prefers the taste of flat burrs – clarity and texture at the same time – and who switches between espresso, filter, and batch brew without purging. If you value a grinder that will last for years, operates quietly, and retains hardly any grounds, this is the right choice for you.
However, if you pull many shots from a filled bean hopper throughout the day and want grind-by-weight, the Mazzer Mini G is the hopper variant with a load cell. Other grinders in the Mazzer collection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which burr profile should I choose?
I200D if you are looking for clarity and freshness – light to medium roasts, filter, fruity profiles with pleasant acidity. I189D if you prefer body and texture – classic Italian espresso, medium to dark roasts, milk drinks. Both are 64mm flat burrs from Mazzer production. The I200D discs are also available individually from us.
Stepped or stepless – what's the difference?
In stepped mode, the adjustment locks into 6-micron steps, allowing you to reliably find a setting again. In stepless mode, you adjust continuously. The Philos masters both; for most, the stepped mode is most practical in everyday life.
How high is the retention?
Virtually zero. With the single-dose principle and vertical burrs, less than half a gram remains, and with the dose finisher, the remainder drops to around 0.1 grams. This means: What you grind today is not mixed with coffee ground yesterday.
How loud is the Philos?
Quiet for a grinder of this type. The motor runs at a low frequency, and a damping design reduces vibrations. In the showroom, it runs without disturbing conversations.
Does the Dosing Cup fit my portafilter?
The included dosing cup is designed for 58mm and fits common 58mm portafilters. For 53mm or 54mm portafilters, there is a separate Philos Canister.
Philos or Mini G?
The Philos is the single-dose grinder for maximum freshness per shot and frequent bean changes with virtually zero retention. The Mini G is the hopper grinder with grind-by-weight for many shots at once. We are happy to advise you on which one suits your workflow.
Can I see it before buying?
Gladly. In Bern and Zurich Oerlikon, you can experience the Philos live. Just let us know, and we'll have it ready – bringing your own beans is welcome.
Roaster's Tip
With the I189D burrs, you can get a dense, chocolatey-nutty espresso with a lot of body from Nutty Delight or Cozy Chocolate – in a cappuccino, this depth carries beautifully through the milk. With the I200D burrs, a brighter, more experimental profile like Wild Peach is worthwhile: The peach note and fine acidity come through more clearly. Approach your settings in small steps. This is our recommendation, one of many.
