ECM Switzerland – German Espresso Manufacturer

The morning in the kitchen. You press the main switch on the Synchronika, the OLED display lights up, you hear the quiet hum of the rotary pump. A few minutes later, the brew group is up to temperature. With the Synchronika 2, ECM uses heating elements directly in the E61 brew group – the classic Italian mechanics remain, but the workflow becomes faster. You pull the lever up, the thermosiphon system circulates, the joystick valves respond precisely to steam and hot water. The first drop emerges from the bottomless portafilter – dark, viscous, with crema that builds up like honey. This is ECM: German engineering philosophy combined with Italian espresso tradition.

ECM (Espresso Coffee Machines Manufacture GmbH) was founded in 1996 by Wolfgang Hauck in Neckargemünd near Heidelberg. The Hauck family had previously been an importer of Italian espresso brands in Germany for decades (Gaggia, La Cimbali, La Pavoni, Vibiemme). Profitec profi-technische Produkte GmbH has existed as an import business since 1985, and its own Profitec espresso machine brand was launched in 1990. Profitec and ECM are both managed by the Hauck family today and share engineering, platforms, and components, but operate with independent portfolios and design languages. ECM machines are manufactured at two factories: Puristika, Classika PID, and the heat exchanger models in the Milan region (Italy), the Synchronika dual-boilers, AMG Edition, Commercial line, and grinders in Bammental near Heidelberg (Germany). Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of ECM in Switzerland – the current portfolio is directly available, with delivery in a few days, and showrooms in Bern and Zurich.

What makes ECM special

Three things. First: German precision in manufacturing. Stainless steel outer casings with minimal tolerances, cleanly laid internal wiring harnesses, components designed for decades of reparability. Second: consistent E61 tradition. Unlike some competitors who have switched to proprietary brew groups in recent years, ECM adheres to the classic E61 mechanics for its heat exchanger and dual-boiler machines – with the characteristic thermosiphon circuit and mechanical lever. Third: complete model range. From compact single-boilers for one to three shots a day to the two-group commercial machine for small cafes, ECM covers the entire spectrum.

All ECM models use 58mm portafilters – industry standard, compatible with IMS and other precision baskets, as well as 58mm tampers.

The ECM family at Coffee Coaching Club

Single Boilers

ECM Classika PID

The single boiler with PID temperature control. This makes all the difference: instead of pressurestat-controlled temperature fluctuations as in classic single boilers, the PID keeps the brewing temperature precisely constant. This allows experimentation with light roasts without temperature becoming a guessing game. The Classika PID has been one of ECM's most successful classics in the home sector for years. From CHF 1,389.95.

ECM Puristika

The modern single boiler with a minimalist design language. Clean lines, no water tank in the housing but a separate external tank, PID temperature control, E61 brew group. For those who seek ECM precision with an architectural aesthetic. From CHF 1,449.95.

ECM Puristika Cream

The Puristika in a rare color variant – slender, rounded housing in matte cream. Technically identical to the Puristika, visually a different statement on the kitchen counter. CHF 1,589.95.

Heat Exchangers (E61 Heat Exchanger)

ECM Mechanika VI Slim

The slim E61 heat exchanger. Brew and steam simultaneously thanks to the heat exchanger architecture, classic E61 brew group, vibratory pump, compact footprint. For home baristas with a regular cappuccino workflow. From CHF 1,979.95.

ECM Mechanika VI Slim Heritage Line

The Mechanika VI Slim in the Heritage Line variant: retro design in anthracite with copper accents – the casing is a different world than the polished stainless steel of the standard version, the technology remains the same (E61, heat exchanger, PID variant available). CHF 2,089.95.

ECM Mechanika VI Slim PID Exclusive Line

The latest variant in the Mechanika VI Slim family (introduced May 2026): compact heat exchanger with front display and shot timer, hand-built in Heidelberg, only 25 cm wide. ECM and Profitec – one roof, two languages

ECM and Profitec are both managed by the Hauck family and share engineering, production, and many components. The Profitec Pro 700 DRIVE and the ECM Synchronika 2 OLED Exclusive Line share the basic technical architecture – E61 dual boiler, rotary pump, comparable boiler sizes – and differentiate themselves in detailed features and aesthetics. ECM consistently adheres to classic E61 mechanics with joystick valves and a polished aesthetic. Profitec takes a slightly more progressive approach with integrated flow control ex works, OLED displays, and customization lines with interchangeable side panels. The choice between ECM and Profitec is often a matter of taste – which design language and feature logic appeals more to you. Both are legitimate.

What differentiates ECM from Profitec?

ECM and Profitec are both managed by the Hauck family and share engineering and production. Differences lie primarily in design, detailed features, and model strategy. ECM consistently adheres to classic E61 mechanics with joystick valves and a polished aesthetic. Profitec takes a slightly more progressive approach with integrated flow control ex works, OLED displays, and customization lines. The Synchronika 2 OLED Exclusive Line from ECM and the Pro 700 DRIVE from Profitec share the basic technical architecture, but look very different. The choice is often aesthetic.

Where are ECM machines produced?

ECM produces at two locations. In the Milan region (Italy): Puristika, Classika PID, and the heat exchanger models. In Bammental near Heidelberg (Germany): the Synchronika dual-boilers, the Mercedes-AMG Special Edition, the Commercial line, and the ECM grinders. The engineering and design team is located in Germany.

What is an E61 brew group?

The E61 is a brew group developed in 1961 by the Italian company Faema, which is now an industry standard for high-quality home espresso machines. Hot brewing water circulates in a thermosiphon circuit through a heavy, preheated metal head that stabilizes the brewing temperature. The mechanical lever at the top of the group controls the water flow and, due to its design, provides gentle pre-infusion. Heat-up time is around 20 minutes for classic models, significantly shorter for models with heating elements in the group like the Synchronika 2 OLED.

What does PID mean for ECM?

PID stands for Proportional-Integral-Derivative – an electronic control loop that keeps the boiler and thus the brewing temperature precisely constant. This is particularly important for single-boilers like the Classika PID, as otherwise the brewing temperature can fluctuate significantly between shots. With dual-boilers and heat exchangers with PID, the temperature can be adjusted in fine increments to match the roast – light roasts benefit from higher temperatures, dark roasts from lower ones.

What is Smart HX® in the Mechanika MAX?

Smart HX® is ECM's own heat exchanger technology used in the Mechanika MAX. It combines the compact heat exchanger architecture with active PID control of the brewing temperature directly at the heat exchanger. The result: temperature stability that otherwise only dual-boilers provide, in a slimmer heat exchanger format. For home baristas who want E61 tradition with modern temperature control, without the footprint of a dual-boiler machine.

What is the ECM Synchronika Edition No.1 Mercedes-AMG?

A limited cooperation between ECM and Mercedes-AMG – limited to 999 units worldwide, each machine individually numbered. Visual highlights: brushed stainless steel housing with sporty side panels, black pressure gauges with red accents in a speedometer look, AMG emblem at the rear, carbon handles on portafilter, brew lever, valves, and tamper. Technical basis: the Synchronika architecture with E61, dual boiler, rotary pump, PID, and fast heat-up. Hand-crafted in Heidelberg. For collectors and enthusiasts – this is a conscious decision, not a standard purchase.

Synchronika, Synchronika Anthracite, Synchronika 2 OLED, AMG Edition – what differentiates them?

All four share the basic architecture: E61 dual boiler, rotary pump, joystick valves, PID. The Synchronika Anthracite is the classic Synchronika in an anthracite-coated casing. The Synchronika 2 OLED Exclusive Line features an OLED display with shot timer, heating elements in the brew group for faster heat-up time, and a wake-up timer. The Mercedes-AMG Edition No.1 is the limited collector's version with AMG-specific optics and carbon accents.

Can I use ECM machines with a direct water connection?

The models with a rotary pump – Mechanika MAX, Technika VI, Synchronika in all variants, Elektronika Profi II, and Elektronika Profi Due – are plumbable. The models with a vibratory pump use the internal water tank. We are happy to discuss installation, filters, and water chemistry in a personal conversation if this is relevant to you.

Can I see ECM machines before buying?

Yes. Several ECM models are available in the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). You are welcome to bring your own beans – we are happy to pull comparison shots on different machines so you can taste the difference for yourself. Roastery Tip

ECM machines have a permanent place in our showroom, and we regularly use them for comparison shots. Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight run on the Mechanika or Synchronika with a classic Italian profile – dense crema, chocolate notes, body supported by the E61 stability. Very Nutty with maximum body without acidity suits the minimalist Classika PID as well as the Technika VI. Those experimenting with light roasts like Wild Peach particularly benefit from the PID temperature control of the Classika or the fast thermal response of the Synchronika 2 OLED. One of many possibilities.
