Zuriga E2 vs. La Marzocco Linea Micra – Which One Fits Your Kitchen?
Zuriga E2 vs. La Marzocco Linea Micra – Comparison for Compact Espresso Machines
The counter next to the window is barely fifty centimeters wide, no more. And yet a small machine stands there every morning, hardly bigger than an espresso pot, and when the paddle tips to the left, the kitchen fills for a moment with the smell of warm metal and dark crema.
Many people were searching for exactly this moment when they came across the Zuriga E2 some time ago – a Swiss machine built for narrow kitchens and clean lines. We have to be honest with you: we no longer carry the Zuriga E2 at Coffee Coaching Club. It has disappeared from our range, available neither online nor in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich.
What we'd like to show you instead is the machine that fills exactly this gap for us today: the La Marzocco Linea Micra. Not as a replacement in the sense of the exact same device, but as our honest answer to the same question – how you get a dense, aromatic espresso in the smallest of spaces, day after day.
What Made the Zuriga E2 Special
At Coffee Coaching Club, we carried the Zuriga E2 ourselves for quite a while, and what convinced us about it was the clarity of the idea behind it: a Swiss machine made of chrome steel and walnut wood, with a laboratory-glass water tank that shows at a glance how much water is left. Compact, under nine kilograms, and yet with a 58-millimeter portafilter, the same size that larger hospitality machines also use.
The thermoblock brought the machine up to temperature in about a minute and a half – a real advantage for anyone who wants a quick espresso in the morning. A steam wand was built in; a pressure gauge and PID control were not part of the model.
This information comes from our own product research from the time when we still carried the Zuriga E2. We deliberately don't update it, because we don't want to present you with anything we can no longer verify firsthand today – for us, honest information also means disclosing its limits.
La Marzocco Linea Micra – Saturated Group Head in the Most Compact Format
What truly sets an espresso machine apart isn't decided on paper, but in the water itself. A cup of coffee holds more than 800 compounds, more than a glass of wine, and which of them dissolve depends largely on the temperature at which the water runs through the puck. Higher temperature draws more body out of the coffee, lower temperature more complexity and aroma – you can taste that in a direct comparison of two shots from the same bean.
The Linea Micra keeps this temperature stable through a saturated group head, bathed in the warmth of a dual-boiler rather than heated only at a single point. This is our observation at Coffee Coaching Club: a saturated group head delivers a more refined aroma profile than a thermoblock system, regardless of how quickly the latter heats up – others in the scene see this in more nuanced ways, and that's fine too. A PID controller additionally keeps the target temperature precisely on point, shot after shot.
Add to that a rotary pump that builds pressure quietly and linearly, without the vibration that smaller pump systems often bring with them. And because taste and smell are inseparably linked – a large part of what we experience as aroma only arises retronasally, when aroma compounds rise through the throat to the olfactory mucosa as you swallow – this temperature stability makes a difference that goes far beyond the crema. The Linea Micra is handcrafted in Scarperia near Florence, with a 3-in-1 multi-portafilter for single, double or bottomless output.

Who the La Marzocco Linea Micra Is For
The Linea Micra is built for narrow kitchens, for one to three shots a day, for people who don't have much time in the morning but have high standards for what ends up in the cup. Exactly the audience that used to land on the Zuriga E2, because that same compactness was visible there at first glance.
Nobody needs a Linea Micra – not even someone who used to be interested in the Zuriga E2. You want it, or you don't, and both are completely fine. What you get if you choose it isn't just a different heating system, but a different feeling: handcrafted work from Florence, a paddle instead of a button, a name that has stood for something in the espresso world for decades. This isn't a purely rational purchase decision, it's also an emotional one – and we respect it in both directions.
Our opinion is one of many: whoever was happy with the Zuriga E2 can be just as happy with another compact machine – the Linea Micra is our suggestion, not the one and only right answer. Whoever wants more machine, more boiler volume, more everyday use with milk drinks, will find that in the Linea Mini R or the GS3. We compare all three in detail in our La Marzocco Comparison: Micra, Mini R and GS3.

Grinder, Scale and Tamper for the Linea Micra
An espresso machine is only as good as what happens before it. For anyone who wants a grinder that's affordable and precise, the Varia VS3 from our Varia Collection is a reliable choice, as is a hand grinder like the Comandante C40 from our Comandante Collection. Whoever wants more control over RPM and the grind curve will find that in the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1 from our Weber Workshops Collection.
For weight control during extraction – at Coffee Coaching Club we always extract by weight ratio, 1:2 as our starting point, never by time alone – a scale from our Normcore Collection is entirely enough: compact, precise, reliable. Whoever wants a flow-rate display and Bluetooth connectivity will find that in our Acaia Collection.
The same goes for tamping: no tool is just a stepping stone to the next price bracket. A spring-loaded tamper from our Tamper Collection delivers even pressure without a second thought, from Normcore to Weber Workshops – which model fits you is, in the end, a question of how it feels in your hand, not of a table.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Zuriga E2 still available at Coffee Coaching Club?
No. We've permanently removed the Zuriga E2 from our range and don't offer it for purchase either online or in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich. This page exists because many coffee lovers are still searching for the Zuriga E2 – we want to answer that search honestly instead of letting it run into a dead end, and we show you our current alternative for the same idea with the La Marzocco Linea Micra: a dense, aromatic espresso in the smallest of spaces.
Can I buy the La Marzocco Linea Micra directly online?
Not in the classic sense with an instant checkout. La Marzocco requires a personal ordering process for the Linea Micra, and as a partner of La Marzocco, we follow this requirement. You get in touch with us – easiest by email at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch – and we work out color, accessories and delivery date together with you before the order is placed. For all other items in our range, from grinders to beans, online purchasing works with us entirely as usual.
Can I see the La Marzocco Linea Micra before buying?
Yes. The Linea Micra is regularly in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) – you can experience it live there, move the paddle yourself and drink an espresso made from it. Since the ordering process is personal, it's worth sending a short message beforehand to office@coffeecoachingclub.ch, so we can take the time for you.
What distinguishes the Linea Micra technically from a compact machine like the earlier Zuriga E2?
The biggest difference lies in the heating system. The Zuriga E2 worked with a thermoblock that heats up in about a minute and a half – fast, but with more temperature fluctuation during extraction. The Linea Micra brings a dual-boiler with a saturated group head, which needs a bit more time to reach full thermal stability, but then keeps the temperature noticeably more constant across the whole shot and from cup to cup. This is our observation from the roastery, others weigh it differently – in the end, what matters is what arrives in your cup.
Which grinder fits the La Marzocco Linea Micra?
For the daily amount a Linea Micra typically grinds, a compact, precise grinder is entirely enough. For anyone who wants it affordable and reliable, the Varia VS3 from our Varia Collection fits well, as does a hand grinder like the Comandante C40. Whoever wants more – more control, more presence on the counter – will find that in the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1.
Is a barista course included with the purchase, and is financing available?
Yes, a private barista course comes with a Linea Micra when you buy from us: we go through extraction philosophy together and practice the espresso ritual directly on your machine, in Bern, Zurich or online. Financing is also possible – just ask us about it.
Roastery Tip
From the roastery: for the vast majority, a dense, full-bodied coffee fits the Linea Micra well, like our Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight – round, chocolatey, with a long finish. Whoever is looking for maximum body without any acidity reaches for Very Nutty. And for anyone curious about a fruity experience: Wild Peach shows what liveliness is possible even with a saturated group head. This is our recommendation, one of many – whichever bean tastes good to you is the right one.
