La Marzocco: Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 – Which one is yours?
La Marzocco: Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 – three machines, three daily routines
Three La Marzoccos, side by side. All handcrafted in Florence. All with saturated group heads. All delivering that dense, full-bodied espresso that feels like a moment to itself – the quiet click of the paddle, the hum of the rotary pump, the first honey-colored drop. And yet, they are not the same. They are built for three different daily routines.
The Linea Micra, the Linea Mini R, and the GS3. Compact, classic for everyday use, commercial. This comparison goes through all three – honest, transparent, without elevating one model above another. Our opinion is one of many. If you're only wavering between the Micra and Mini R, you'll find the concentrated two-way comparison in our Blog article Micra vs. Mini R.
Why La Marzocco at all
A shot at 93°C tastes round, sweet, dense. A shot at 88°C tastes thin and underextracted. A shot at 96°C tips into bitterness. The main problem with most household machines is not that they are too hot or too cold – but that they fluctuate. Between extractions. Between the first and second shot. Between summer and winter in the kitchen.
La Marzocco builds saturated group heads: the brew head is flanged directly to the boiler, permanently flooded with hot water. No thermal transition, no fluctuation. Water makes up a large part of espresso – when it arrives at the coffee grounds stably at the set temperature, it dissolves oils, sugars, and aromas in a precise balance. This is our observation from the roastery: saturated group heads deliver a more refined aroma profile than E61 systems, regardless of whether they are single-boiler, heat exchanger, or dual-boiler.
All three machines share this basic principle. What distinguishes them is their dimensioning – how much thermal mass, how much steam power, how much control.

Linea Micra – compact, fast, understated
29 cm wide, 19 kg. The Micra is the smallest La Marzocco in the home line and fits under many kitchen wall cabinets. The fact that it has a rotary pump despite its compactness is one of its special features – quieter and more linear than a vibratory pump. The 3-in-1 Convertible Portafilter – single spout, double spout and bottomless in one portafilter – is a thoughtful feature for households that switch between rituals. The heat-up time is shorter than for the Mini R and GS3: ready for use after about 5 minutes, for full thermal stability, a longer pre-heating time of about 15 minutes is worthwhile, as with any dual-boiler machine. Order via a personal process as specified by La Marzocco, contact office@coffeecoachingclub.ch.
Linea Mini R – the everyday classic
35.6 cm wide, around 30 kg, 3.0-liter steam boiler. The Mini R is what La Marzocco builds when they want to bring the technology of their commercial café machines as close as possible to the home. The "R" generation introduced an integrated shot timer on the group head, a convertible multi-portafilter, a flush function, two-valve pre-infusion with an extended timeframe, and Brew-by-Weight integration with the Acaia Lunar LM. The 3-liter steam boiler provides milk foam without interruption – even when four cappuccinos are made consecutively. This is an everyday workflow close to a professional café situation – built for 3 to 10 shots per day, guests, family, regular milk coffees. Available to order directly online, nationwide in 2–4 business days.
GS3 – commercial technology for the home
40.6 cm wide, around 33 kg, 1.3-liter brew boiler with saturated group head. The GS3 is essentially a La Marzocco café machine in its smallest built version – the same technology that runs reliably in cafés for many years. The thermal mass is in a different league: more than a liter of water directly at the brew head means extremely small temperature fluctuations even over long extraction times. Two variants: The AV (Auto-Volumetric) works with a flow meter and offers programmable volumetric extractions – ideal for everyday reproducibility. The MP (Manual Paddle) has a manual paddle with a conical valve that allows stepless pressure profiling – pre-infusion at low pressure, then rising to full 9 bar, depending on what the bean wants. For fruit shots with light roasts like Wild Peach, pressure profiling is a noticeable tool; for full-bodied darker profiles, the stable 9-bar extraction of the AV is sufficient. Available to order directly online, for machines of this size we recommend Click & Collect in the showroom.
Which machine for whom
The Micra is for households that pull one to three shots a day, have limited space, and don't want to wait long for their machine. The Mini R is for households that regularly make cappuccinos, have guests, drink a lot of milk coffee, or simply want a machine that will last for years without ever compromising on capacity. The GS3 is for people who want commercial technology from the café at home – with the thermal stability and longevity that this technology brings. None of these criteria makes one machine better than another. They are different daily routines. Someone who buys a Mini R even though a Micra would suffice is making a lifestyle choice – and that is legitimate. Someone who wants a GS3 on their kitchen counter because the paddle, the presence, the sound of the pump simply triggers something – that is also legitimate. Those who want it, know why.
Which grinder fits
The machine is one half, the grinder is the other. For everyday use with the Micra, from the Varia Collection, the VS3 is affordable and precise, and as a hand grinder, the C40 from the Comandante Collection. For the Mini R, the Varia VS6 with 58 mm burrs and variable speed is suitable, and as a grind-by-weight solution, the Mahlkönig E64 WS. For the GS3 as an endgame combination, the EG-1 from the Weber Workshops Collection or the P80 from the Option-O Collection. No budget is just the beginning – a good hand grinder delivers excellent results, an electric one saves time. Further selection in the Coffee Grinder Collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see all three machines before buying?
Micra and Mini R are regularly live in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich. The GS3 is not always in stock; transportation between showrooms or a showroom appointment may require 1–3 days' notice. Contact office@coffeecoachingclub.ch.
What is the difference between GS3 AV and GS3 MP?
The AV (Auto-Volumetric) works with a flow meter and offers programmable volumetric extractions – it is built for everyday reproducibility. The MP (Manual Paddle) has a manual paddle with a conical valve, which allows you to infinitely vary the pressure throughout the entire extraction – pressure profiling for experimental profiles. Technically identical core, different operating philosophy.
Do I need a fixed water connection?
No, all three can be operated using the internal water tank. A fixed water connection is a thoughtful option for households with regular use of the Mini R and GS3. Water makes up a large part of espresso – the ideal mineral content is 50–100 mg/l.
Which of the three is suitable for light roasts and fruity profiles?
All three handle light roasts well. The GS3 MP offers the finest tool through pressure profiling – gentle pre-infusion at low pressure, then rising to 9 bar. For the vast majority, the aroma profile of Micra or Mini R for light roasts is already convincing.
Is an introduction included with the purchase?
Yes. When purchasing a machine in this price range, a private barista course is included – about 60 minutes of extraction philosophy and espresso ritual, in Bern, Zurich or online. Financing is possible.
Roastery Tip
All three machines show their character most clearly with dense, full-bodied profiles. For the vast majority, Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight will do – chocolate, nuts, round body, long finish. If you're looking for the strongest body without any acidity, you'll find it with Very Nutty. For a fruity discovery – especially exciting with the GS3 MP and pressure profiling – Wild Peach. This is our recommendation, one of many.
