The Mahlkönig E64 WS is Mahlkönig's first home espresso grinder with Grind-by-Weight and the new Grind-by-Sync technology. Introduced at HostMilano 2025, it is based on the same 64mm burr set as the professional Mahlkönig SD64, bringing a feature previously reserved for gastronomy into the home kitchen: dosing accurate to 0.1 gram, reproducible with every shot. Grind-by-Weight

Most electric espresso grinders grind by time. You set five seconds, the grinder grinds for five seconds. The amount of ground coffee produced depends on many variables: how dense the bean is, how moist it is, how full the hopper is, how old the roast is. In practice, this means that an 18-gram target amount can turn into 17.4 grams one time, and 18.7 grams another. Those who extract by weight ratio (1:2 as a starting point) will get a different extraction dynamic every time – even if the output is correct.

The E64 WS solves this with an integrated scale directly under the portafilter fork. The ground coffee is weighed in real time as it falls from the burrs. The motor stops as soon as the programmed weight is reached – with a resolution of 0.1 grams. The deviation from shot to shot is in the tenth-of-a-gram range – more precise than most manual weighings with an external scale.

What this means for taste: If you want to understand your extraction, you need a stable variable. The dose is the most fundamental. If it is constant, changes in grind size, bean changes, and temperature variations can only then be cleanly identified. Without a constant dose, every change is a guessing game. This is the real value of Grind-by-Weight in home use.

Grind-by-Sync – when grinder and machine communicate

Grind-by-Sync is an interface that connects the E64 WS with compatible Mahlkönig devices. Specifically: with the Mahlkönig Sync Scale or the Mahlkönig Xenia. In the Sync setup, the Sync Scale measures the actual extraction time or the output weight. If the shot is outside your recipe parameters, the system signals the grinder: finer or coarser, automatically, to bring the next shot closer to the recipe.

Important for classification: Grind-by-Sync is an ecosystem feature. With non-Mahlkönig machines, the E64 WS works as an excellent Grind-by-Weight grinder, but without automatic grind size adjustment. Those who use the Sync Scale get full automation. For everyone else, GbW remains the core feature. Functions can be extended over time via Over-the-Air software updates.

Electric grind size adjustment in micrometer steps

The E64 WS has no ring, no knob for grind size. The burr distance is electronically adjusted via a sensor-controlled motor (Disc Distance Detection, DDD) and displayed on the screen in micrometers. A single micrometer corresponds to approximately one second of extraction time difference – a precision that has been rare in this price range. Zero-point calibration is tool-free and guided by the display: you bring the burrs together until they touch, set the zero point, done. After a burr change, the grinder is back to its reference point in a few minutes.

This includes a ball joint spout that flexibly adapts to different portafilters, and a metal clump buster (now included as standard). The LED display has adjustable ambient lighting at the spout – the color can be matched to the setup, if desired.

The E64 WS is a hopper-first grinder – retention in hopper mode is around 4 grams, which must be purged when changing beans. Its strength lies in the automation of dosing, not in variability.

Important to know: The E64 WS is designed as a home grinder. It is built for one to two espressos directly in a row, not for continuous commercial operation. The maximum daily output is 2.5 kg, and commercial use is not covered by the warranty.
