Dual boiler espresso machines
Buy Heat Exchanger (HX) Espresso Machines in Switzerland – the Sweet Spot for Home Baristas
A heat exchanger (HX) machine has a single boiler that stores hot water for steam generation – at 120 to 130 °C. A second, smaller water circuit runs through this boiler: a thin tube through which fresh cold water flows, heating up to brewing temperature (approx. 90–94 °C) as it passes through. Hence the name "heat exchanger".
In practice, this means: you can pull espresso and steam milk simultaneously, without having to wait for a second boiler. The workflow is almost identical to a dual boiler machine – only the brewing temperature is slightly less precisely controllable than with two separate boilers. For most beans and workflows, this is perfectly sufficient.
For decades, the HX has been the sweet spot for demanding home baristas: it offers 80% of professional functionality with a significantly smaller footprint and price. Coffee Coaching Club carries the complete HX cluster from Italy, Germany, and Switzerland – from the entry-level Lelit Anna to the Swiss Olympia Maximatic.
Heat Exchanger vs. Single Boiler vs. Dual Boiler
| Design | Boiler | Workflow | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Boiler | 1 boiler, 1 water circuit | Brewing and steaming consecutively, waiting when switching | affordable, compact |
| Heat Exchanger / HX | 1 boiler, 2 water flows | Simultaneous brewing and steaming, approx. 90–94 °C brewing water via heat exchanger | mid-range price |
| Dual Boiler | 2 boilers, separately temperature-controlled | Simultaneous, higher temperature precision, PID per circuit | higher, professional level |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a Heat Exchanger and an HX?
No difference – "Zweikreiser" is the German term, "HX" (Heat Exchanger) is the international one. Both refer to the same design: one boiler, two separate water paths.
Is the extra cost for PID worth it?
With an HX, definitely: PID keeps the boiler temperature stable and thus indirectly influences the brewing temperature. Without PID, the temperature fluctuates by several degrees, which is particularly noticeable in the taste of light roasts. With Bezzera, Lelit, Rocket, Profitec, and ECM, PID is now standard in the premium segment.
What does "Cooling Flush" or "Temperature Surfing" mean?
Because HX machines draw their brewing temperature from the hot steam boiler, the water in the brew path is sometimes too hot. A "cooling flush" – i.e., briefly running water through the brew group before attaching the portafilter – lowers the temperature to the desired value. With many modern HXs (Lelit Mara X, Bezzera with PID, ECM Mechanika MAX with Smart HX®), this is less necessary because the machines maintain a more balanced temperature.
Can I connect an HX to the mains water supply?
Yes, many models have a plumb-in option – recognizable by the "DE" suffix on Bezzera, or explicitly as a variant on Profitec Pro 500 and ECM Mechanika MAX. For home setups in Switzerland, this is often unnecessary (water tank is sufficient), but practical for heavily used or office setups.
What distinguishes the Rocket Appartamento TCA from the standard Appartamento?
The standard Appartamento is not currently in CCC's active range. The Appartamento TCA is the revised variant with updated components and a wide selection of colors and materials: stainless steel in white/copper/black, black-copper combination, matte black, with wooden elements. All versions are technically identical, an aesthetic decision.
Lelit Mara X or Rocket Appartamento TCA?
Two popular sweet-spot HX machines. Mara X: Italian, compact, with Lelit PID setup and E61 brew group, very specialty-coffee-oriented. Appartamento TCA: Italian, classic Rocket design, slightly heavier, classic controls with toggle valves. Both are top, an aesthetic and workflow question.
Which Mahlkönig grinder fits the HX?
For entry-level HX (Lelit Anna, Profitec PRO 400): Eureka Mignon Specialita, Lelit William, Mahlkönig X54. For premium HX (Mara X, Rocket Cronometro R, ECM Mechanika MAX): Eureka Atom 65, Mazzer Mini G, Mahlkönig E65S, Option-O Lagom 01. For single-dosing workflow: Ceado E37Z Naked, 1Zpresso K-Ultra (hand), Varia VS3.
What is Smart HX® in the ECM Mechanika MAX?
ECM's own heat exchanger variant. Optimized to maintain brewing temperature more evenly than classic HX designs – less need for cooling flush, more stable extraction. Combined with PID for both circuits.
Why is the Olympia Maximatic so expensive in the HX segment?
The Olympia Maximatic (CHF 3,989) is a Swiss manufacture with the same design philosophy as the Olympia Cremina – repairable for decades, with Swiss service and original spare parts directly from Aargau. This reflects the small production numbers and Swiss manufacturing tradition. Functionally an HX, philosophically in a league of its own.
Can I test HX machines before buying?
Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. We have the main models from Bezzera, Lelit, Rocket, Quick Mill, ECM, Profitec, Torre, and Olympia on site and can compare them directly – heated up, with your preferred beans. Please arrange an appointment in advance.
