Urnex Cleaning Products

Buy Urnex in Switzerland – Café Standard for Cleaning Products

Urnex was founded in 1936 in the USA and has been the café standard for cleaning products in specialty coffee for decades. Cafiza for brew group backflush, Grindz for grinder burr cleaning, BioCaf as a bio-certified alternative, BioCaf Alkaline for milk systems – the Urnex product family covers the complete specialty coffee cleaning spectrum. Coffee Coaching Club is the exclusive Swiss importer for Urnex.

What makes Urnex distinctive

Three characteristics define the brand. Firstly, manufacturer approvals: Urnex products are approved by practically all major espresso machine manufacturers – La Marzocco, Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Quick Mill, Slayer. Warranty remains valid when using Urnex. Secondly, specialty coffee specialization: Urnex develops products exclusively for café workflow, grinder chambers, milk systems – not as a generic cleaner manufacturer. Thirdly, café practice: every specialty café workflow relies on Urnex – at Coffee Coaching Club, in thousands of cafés worldwide.

The Urnex Product Family

Urnex Cafiza – the industry standard for brew group backflush

Cafiza (developed in the early 1980s) thoroughly dissolves coffee oils, leaving no residue. Application: 1–2g in blind filter, several backflush cycles, then rinse with clear water. Café standard worldwide.

Urnex BioCaf – bio-certified alternative

BioCaf has the same cleaning power as Cafiza, but with bio-certified ingredients. For cafés with organic aspirations or environmentally conscious home setups. Reliably cleans brew groups.

Urnex Grindz – Grinder cleaning tablets

Grindz (developed by Urnex in collaboration with Mahlkönig Hamburg since 2005) are tablets made from organic ingredients that are ground through the grinder. They remove coffee oil residues from the burrs and clean the grinding chamber without disassembly. Recommended every 3–6 months.

Urnex BioCaf Alkaline Milk Cleaner – for milk systems

Urnex BioCaf Alkaline cleans steam wands, milk frothers, and milk pitchers – alkaline, dissolves milk proteins. Recommended daily after shift end, especially critical for hygiene in cappuccino workflow.

Urnex Dezcal – Descaler

For pump machines without copper boilers. Recommended every 3–6 months in regions with hard, unfiltered water. Caution: many espresso machine manufacturers prohibit descalers for copper boilers – in this case, it's better to filter water from the start with Brita.

When do you need what?

When Urnex Product
Daily backflush with water only water, no cleaning agent necessary
Every ~50 shots backflush with cleaner Cafiza or BioCaf
Every 3–6 months grinder burrs Grindz
Daily milk system after shift BioCaf Alkaline Milk Cleaner
Every 3–6 months descaling (if necessary) Dezcal (not for copper boilers)

Who is Urnex for?

Everyone who owns an espresso machine – daily backflush with water plus regular Cafiza/BioCaf is the basic equipment for every specialty coffee setup. Cafés with a high milk beverage workflow need BioCaf Alkaline Milk Cleaner as a daily essential. All grinder owners need Grindz every few months.

Clean brew group = clean taste. A gummed-up brew group brings bitter, rancid flavors to every shot. Urnex eliminates that.

What goes with it?

For the espresso machine: Coffee Machine Collection. For the grinder: Grinder Collection. For water filtration as a care counterpart: Brita. For grinding chamber cleaning with a brush or mini vacuum: HOTO Mini Handheld Vacuum. For cleaning stations and knock boxes: Machine-Grinder Cleaning Collection. For precision baskets: IMS Baristapro Nanotech (TiN coating facilitates coffee oil cleaning). For beans from our own roastery: CCC Own Roasts with Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, Wild Peach, Bright Cassis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cafiza or BioCaf?

Cleaning effect is equivalent. BioCaf: bio-certified ingredients, for cafés with organic aspirations and environmentally conscious home setups. Cafiza: longer-established industry standard, slightly cheaper. Both work for daily café backflush.

How does Grindz work?

Pour tablets into the grinder (hopper or single-dose funnel), the tablets are ground like normal beans. The organic ingredients clean the burrs and grinding chamber during grinding. After Grindz, grind through once with normal beans and discard the grounds.
