WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique, named after John Weiss, who popularized the method in the specialty coffee community. The principle: before you tamp the coffee grounds in the portafilter, you comb through them with fine needles to break up clumps, reduce static electricity, and distribute the grounds evenly. The result: dramatically less channeling, more even extraction, visibly more consistent cup profiles.
For specialty workflow, WDT is now a mandatory step. Coffee Coaching Club carries 15 active WDT models from six brands – from compact single-needle tools (CHF 21) to premium auto-distributors (CHF 269). For home setups, the mid-range designs (CHF 30–60) are perfectly sufficient. For cafe workflow or endgame setups, the rotating or premium designs are worth it.
CCC is the exclusive Swiss importer for Normcore.

A typical specialty workflow with WDT:
The WDT step takes 5–10 seconds and does not significantly disrupt the workflow. The effect on the brewing result is noticeable – less channeling, more even extraction, higher cup consistency.
Hand-WDT (single-needle tools, standard): you guide the tool by hand 8–12 times through the coffee bed. More workflow steps, but precise control.
Auto-Distributor (rotating, e.g., Normcore Needle Distributor, MHW-3BOMBER Castle / Cyclone): the tool sits on the portafilter, you press a button or rotate manually, the needles rotate automatically through the coffee bed. Faster, more consistent, for cafe workflow or home setups with high shot volume.
For Normcore and Subminimal, we are the exclusive Swiss importer. Wiedemann is a Swiss manufacturer – service and wood care tips directly through CCC. For Weber Workshops and MHW-3BOMBER, we have service channels through the manufacturers. Free shipping in Switzerland and Liechtenstein from CHF 60.
In the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), we demonstrate the WDT workflow live – with your preferred beans and various WDT tools for direct comparison.

For beans from our own roastery: CCC In-house Roasts.
Weiss Distribution Technique: A method for distributing coffee grounds in the portafilter before tamping. You guide fine needles (typically 4–8 needles) through the coffee bed, break up clumps, reduce static electricity, and ensure even distribution. One of the most effective workflow improvements in specialty espresso.
For classic espresso machines with hopper grinders and dark roasts: not necessarily – most beans forgive minor distribution inconsistencies. For specialty setups with light roasts, modern grinders, and bottomless workflow: a noticeable workflow step that significantly improves cup consistency. Highly recommended for home setups from Lelit Mara X / Bezzera Magica upwards.
Normcore Premium V3 with Stand (CHF 47): standard hand-WDT, you control the movement. Normcore Needle Distributor (CHF 94): rotating auto-distributor, faster in workflow. For home with 1–2 shots per day: standard is sufficient. For frequent shots or cafe: auto-distributor makes sense.
Yes, Wiedemann is a Swiss manufacturer. WDT Needle Distribution Tool in four wood variants (oak, walnut, olive, smoked oak, all CHF 59). Wooden handle with stainless steel needles, strong design, durable. Swiss service directly through Wiedemann or CCC.
If you have Weber Workshops EG-1, BIRD, or HG-2 in your setup and want the complete Weber design language: yes. The MOONRAKER is a design studio creation on a different level than standard WDT tools. For home setups without a Weber context, a Normcore V3 or Wiedemann offers significantly better value for money.
8–12 circular movements are usually sufficient. More important than the number: move through the entire coffee bed (top to bottom), break up clumps, achieve even distribution. Too many movements risk compacting the coffee bed too much – which leads to channeling.
Standard are 0.3–0.4 mm needles – thin enough to glide through the coffee bed, robust enough for regular use. The premium designs (Weber Moonraker, Normcore Premium) use harder stainless steel that is less prone to bending.
Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. We demonstrate the WDT workflow live, and you can directly compare different designs (hand, auto-distributor, premium design studio). Please arrange an appointment in advance.
