A puck screen is a thin metal screen that you place on top of the tamped coffee puck in the portafilter before inserting the portafilter. During extraction, the puck screen distributes the water jet from the brew group evenly over the entire coffee puck – instead of the water hitting the coffee puck punctually and causing channeling.

Two visible effects: (1) more even extraction with less channeling risk, often slightly higher and more consistent extraction rates; (2) cleaner brew group because less coffee grounds stick to the shower screen after extraction. Both effects are noticeable in the specialty workflow – not spectacular, but consistent. It is now a standard tool for home setups and cafe workflow. Which size for which machine

0.2 mm vs. 0.8 mm – what's the difference?

0.2 mm (Ultra-Slim): very thin, minimal headroom loss in the portafilter, almost imperceptible when tamping. Optimal for setups where every millimeter in the coffee bed counts (especially with a full dose).

0.8 mm (Standard-Slim): slightly thicker, more robust in daily use, less prone to bending. Currently the more common standard. Sufficient for 95% of setups.

For home setups without special requirements: 0.8 mm standard. For specialty setups with precisely dosed extraction profiles: 0.2 mm Ultra-Slim is useful.

Titanium PVD Coating – when is it useful?

The Titanium PVD coating (black or gold) is a very thin, hard coating that reduces coffee ground adhesion. Practical effect: the screen sticks less to the coffee puck after extraction, making it easier to knock out or rinse off. Whether this is worth the CHF 2–3 surcharge depends on your workflow preferences. For home setups where cleaning time matters: yes, it's worth it.

What is the purpose of a puck screen?

(2) cleaner brew group after extraction because less coffee grounds are pushed up into the shower screen. For home setups with specialty demands, it's an inexpensive standard tool (approx. CHF 20–25).

Which size for E61 machines?

58.5 mm – the standard for all E61 machines (Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit, Quick Mill, Olympia Cremina is different) and for La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino. Measure the inner diameter of the filter basket in detail – many premium baskets are just over 58 mm.

Normcore 0.2 mm or 0.8 mm Puck Screen?

Both designs work well. 0.2 mm Ultra-Slim: very thin, no headroom loss, almost invisible in the coffee puck. 0.8 mm Standard-Slim: thicker, more robust in daily use. For standard home setups: 0.8 mm is sufficient. For specialty setups with dense filling: 0.2 mm is useful.

How do I care for a puck screen?

Knock off or rinse after each use. Once a week, soak in water or brew group cleaning solution (Urnex Cafiza, BioCaf). Stainless steel models can go in the dishwasher (top rack) – titanium PVD coated ones are better cleaned by hand to preserve the coating.

What is the advantage of a storage stand?

Puck screens are thin and flexible – without a stand, they scratch or bend on the work surface. The Normcore Premium with Stand (CHF 36, 2 pieces including stand) is the sensible complete purchase. Normcore Espresso Filter Holder (CHF 44) for a separate storage solution.

Do I also need a paper filter?

Some specialty workflows combine a puck screen with a paper filter (e.g., at the bottom between the basket and the coffee puck, or on top of the puck). This enhances the filter effect and can make the cup character clearer. At CCC, we carry corresponding paper filters – but the combination is for specialty experiments, not mandatory.
