Profitec Filter Screen 58 mm – puck screen made of woven stainless steel
After tamping, a fine metal mesh sits on the coffee grounds, and the group head stays clean when you lock in the portafilter.
A mesh between water and puck
The Filter Screen is a round disc of woven stainless steel with a 100-micron mesh size that sits on the puck in the 58 mm basket after tamping. The routine stays the same: grind, tamp, insert the screen, pull the shot. After the shot, you take it out and rinse it.
Two things happen in between. The water doesn't hit a single spot as a concentrated jet from the shower screen; instead, it spreads across the surface before it penetrates the coffee grounds. That lowers the chance of a preferred channel forming right at the start, through which the rest of the water later takes a shortcut. And because the coffee grounds no longer touch the group head directly, the shower screen stays cleaner, which shortens daily cleaning.
A puck screen isn't a switch that turns every shot into a good one. It removes one source of unrest, no more and no less. Some taste the difference clearly, others barely, and both are honest observations. Our opinion is one of many, and in the end all that matters is that the coffee tastes good.

Who the Filter Screen is for
For anyone with a 58 mm portafilter who wants to keep the water distribution calmer without changing anything on the machine. For anyone who brews with a bottomless portafilter and wants to see how the shot behaves. And for anyone who feels that daily cleaning of the group head eats up too much time.
More accessories and the matching machines are in the Profitec collection. If you want to buy a puck screen in Switzerland, you can also get it from us directly online.
What goes well with it
What happens before the screen weighs more than the screen itself. For anyone who wants an affordable, precise coffee grinder: the Varia VS3, or the Comandante C40 as a hand grinder. If you want larger burrs and less retention: the Varia VS6, the Weber Workshops EG-1 or an Option-O Lagom. Burr sets are like car engines, subjective, and no budget is just a beginning.
We describe extraction by brew ratio, 1:2 as a starting point, never by time alone. For that, you need a scale. For anyone who wants an affordable, reliable coffee scale: the compact scales from the Normcore collection. If you want an app, flow-rate display and Bluetooth: the scales from Acaia.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly does the Filter Screen go?
After tamping, you place it on the coffee grounds in the portafilter, then lock in and pull the shot. After the shot, you take it out again. The order is: grind, tamp, insert the screen, pull the shot.
Will it fit my basket?
It's made for 58 mm baskets and fits the common Profitec and ECM portafilters. If you use a different brand, just drop us a line saying which portafilter you have, and we'll clarify it beforehand.
What difference does it make to the taste?
It distributes the water more evenly before it penetrates the puck, lowering the chance of channelling. How clearly that shows in the glass depends on the bean, grind size and machine. Some taste a clear difference, others barely any.
How do I clean it?
Rinse under running water and dry. If needed, put it in your usual cleaning solution for coffee oils together with the basket.

From our coffee roastery
A calmer shot shows the bean more clearly. From our coffee roastery, we recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight: dense, aromatic and full-bodied, with caramel, chocolate and nuts.
If you want maximum body without any acidity, go for Very Nutty. And if you're curious, Wild Peach shows you a fruity, lively side. That's our recommendation, one of many, and any bean you enjoy works.
