The five machine types at a glance
The finder will lead you to one of these categories. If you want to dive deeper, we have a deep-dive for each:
- Single Boiler — one boiler, compact and inexpensive; espresso and steam one after another. Good if milk is not the priority. (Heating systems explained)
- Heat Exchanger (Dual Circuit) — brew and steam simultaneously, classic prosumer feel, often with E61 group. (E61 explained)
- Dual Boiler — two boilers, best temperature stability, brew and steam simultaneously. (Saturated brew groups)
- Lever Machine — manual ritual, purely mechanical, pressure by hand.
- Thermoblock / Compact — quickly ready and space-saving. (Ring Brew Group · Hybrid Systems)

Frequently Asked Questions
Which espresso machine is good for beginners?
An uncomplicated start is possible with a single boiler or a compact thermoblock machine (heats up quickly, space-saving). If you make a lot of milk drinks from the beginning, a heat exchanger is more comfortable. A good grinder is important in any case.
Single boiler or heat exchanger?
The single boiler brews and steams sequentially — cheaper and more compact, ideal with little milk. The heat exchanger keeps both ready via a heat exchanger and can brew and steam simultaneously — more pleasant for cappuccino & co.
Do I need a dual boiler?
Not necessarily. A dual boiler offers the best temperature stability and simultaneous brewing/steaming — useful with high demands and budget. For many, a heat exchanger or a compact machine is completely sufficient.
