Single Boiler Espresso Machines

Buy single boiler espresso machines Switzerland – the classic entry

A single boiler espresso machine has exactly one boiler. This boiler is heated to approx. 92 °C for espresso extraction and to approx. 120 °C for milk foam. You brew first, then switch, wait 20–60 seconds for the higher temperature, then steam milk. Classic Italian bar workflow from the 1950s – the design that started it all.

The big advantages: compact construction, significantly cheaper than HX or dual boiler, often smaller and lighter. The disadvantage: if you make several cappuccinos in a row, the sequence becomes more complex – brew, pause, steam, brew, pause, steam. No problem for solo espresso or occasional cappuccino. For a family with four to five milk drinks daily, an HX or dual boiler is more comfortable.

The brands in the cluster

La Pavoni (Milan, since 1905) – Italian home classic

Casa Bar (CHF 599) and Casa Bar PID (CHF 949) are La Pavoni's current home single boilers. Compact portafilter machines with 54mm portafilters, visually in a classic Italian style. The PID variant features electronic temperature control for more stable brewing temperature.

Profitec PRO 100 GO – CHF 1,009

Profitec's compact entry-level single boiler from the Heidelberg manufacturer. Solid German craftsmanship, classic design, includes barista workshop.

  • Classika PID (CHF 1,389) – ECM classic with PID control
  • Puristika (CHF 1,449) – Puristic design with E61 group head
  • Puristika Cream (CHF 1,589) – in a cream-colored design variant

All include a barista workshop.

Italian single boiler machine with rotary knob and PID control. A design-oriented alternative to the classic Bezzera/Lelit range, with a unique operating philosophy.

When a single boiler suits you

You primarily drink espresso or at most one cappuccino in the morning. You want a professional design (E61, stainless steel, PID) without the price level of an HX or dual boiler. You have little counter space and want a compact machine. Or you are a beginner and want a solid first machine that justifies an upgrade to HX/dual boiler in 3-5 years.

If you regularly make milk drinks for several people or want to experiment with light specialty beans – rather an HX (Bezzera Magica, Lelit Mara X, Rocket Appartamento) or an entry-level dual boiler (Profitec Pro 600, Profitec PRO 300). How you use it – that's up to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to wait between brewing and steaming?

With classic single boilers with a standard boiler, approx. 30–60 seconds until the boiler heats up from brewing to steam temperature. With modern models with good PID and a smaller boiler, rather 20–40 seconds.

Bezzera Unica or ECM Classika PID?

Both are classic single boilers with PID. Bezzera Unica PID VT5 (CHF 1,289): Italian, classic E61 group head, toggle steam valve. ECM Classika PID (CHF 1,389): German manufacturer, somewhat more modern operation. Functionally very similar, an aesthetic decision.

La Pavoni Casa Bar or Casa Bar PID?

The extra cost from CHF 599 to CHF 949 is for the PID control. Casa Bar without PID: simple thermostat, temperature fluctuates by a few degrees. Casa Bar PID: electronic temperature control, more consistent brewing temperature, better suited for specialty beans. If budget allows: definitely the PID variant.

When is an upgrade to an HX worthwhile?

If you make more than two milk drinks daily and the workflow change from brewing to steaming starts to bother you. Then Lelit Mara X, Bezzera Magica, Rocket Appartamento TCA or Profitec PRO 400 in the CHF 1,400–2,500 class are the next sensible step.

Do I need a fixed water connection?

Almost never with a home single boiler. A water tank is sufficient for 95% of setups. If you already have one and don't want to constantly refill, you can choose the Bezzera Nini S PID DE – the only single boiler machine in our active range with a fixed water connection option.

What is the difference between Puristika and Puristika Cream?

Only the color. Both ECM Puristika are functionally identical, with E61 brew groups and classic ECM construction. The Cream variant is the cream-colored aesthetic option (CHF 1,589 vs CHF 1,449 for the standard stainless steel version).

Can I test single boilers before buying?

Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. La Pavoni Casa Bar, Bezzera Unica/Nini, Profitec PRO 100 GO, ECM Puristika/Classika and Torre Pierino are available on site – direct comparison with HX and dual boilers possible at the same appointment. Please arrange an appointment in advance.
