Option-O – Scandinavian Precision in Coffee Equipment

You stand in front of the Lagom P80. The push button clicks satisfyingly, almost silently. You pour the beans into the hopper and press. The 500-watt brushless motor revs up – you briefly feel the vibration through the chassis, then it's gone. The beans glide through the integrated Pre-Crushing System, are fed evenly into the 80mm Mizen burrs by the Auger Feed. You hear nothing sharp, no motor screaming. Just a deep, rich grinding sound. Then the grinder stops automatically – the torque sensor detects that the last beans have passed through. The grounds fall into the cup, and you look forward to your coffee.

Option-O is an Australian brand with a Scandinavian design philosophy: "Lagom" – not too much, not too little, just right. No features that just sound good. No materials that just look expensive. Instead: precisely engineered grinders that do what they're supposed to, and at a level that can compete with the most renowned endgame brands. Coffee Coaching Club carries the entire Option-O product range in Switzerland. The entire assortment is directly available (mostly), delivery in a few days, showrooms in Bern and Zurich.

What makes Option-O special

Option-O builds grinders that don't try to impress at first glance. No elaborate design gimmicks, no marketing myths. Instead: burrs that deliver a characteristic taste in the cup – clear expression of the bean, cleanly separated aromas, low fines content. Speed control that isn't just a gimmick but produces audibly different cups. Zero-retention designs that work without daily cleaning.

What we experience in our roastery and showroom: an Option-O grinder isn't replaced after three months. It stays – because it does what it promised, shot after shot, for years. That's our observation, one of many.

The Option-O Range

The Lagom line from Option-O covers the entire spectrum – from the most compact electric grinder on the market to the absolute flagship with 102 mm burrs. An overview of the categories:

Flagship Grinders

Option-O Lagom 01 – the absolute Flagship

The Lagom 01 is the flagship of the entire Option-O family. 102 mm Mizen Blind Burrs – 18% more grinding surface than the 98 mm industry-standard burrs, and without screw holes for additionally reduced retention. Developed after over a year of intensive iteration, specially optimized for modern light roasts – high clarity, clean sweetness, defined aroma structure. Industrial-grade brushless DC motor with 1300 watts peak power (compared to 500 W for the P80), variable speed from 200 to 1700 RPM, up to 6 g per second grinding throughput at espresso setting. Stepless grind adjustment with 7.5 micrometers per line (finer than the P80).

Construction: Unibody made from CNC-machined 6061-T6 aluminum, all critical components manufactured to 0.01 mm tolerance – the alignment of the burrs is perfect ex-factory and remains so. 300 g bean hopper for continuous grinding during batch brewing, 15.3 kg weight (deliberately heavy for smooth operation), 17 × 30 × 36 cm. Tool-less Disassembly for routine cleaning without disturbing the grind setting. Magnetic, modular platform for portafilter holders or grind cups. Static reduction, Auto-Purge, Auto-Off. As of April 2025, the Pre-Crushing System (PCS) is pre-installed on all 102 mm variants.

For whom: Enthusiasts who have consciously chosen light roasts and are looking for a grinder that brings their complexity to the cup. Roasteries and cafés that need single-dose workflow at competition level. People who want a grinder for the next ten years, not for the next three. The Lagom 01 is also available with a 98 mm carrier configuration, for which SSP High Uniformity burrs are a suitable alternative – a path for those who prefer more intense, punchier acidity in light roasts. Those who want it know why.

Option-O Lagom P80

The successor to the legendary P64 – completely redesigned, with 80mm Mizen 80OM Flat Burrs, integrated Pre-Crushing System (PCS) and Auger Feed. 500W brushless motor with double the torque of the P64, variable speed from 300 to 1700 RPM (stepped, with numerical scale for reproducibility). Auto-Off via torque sensor – the grinder stops itself when all beans have passed through. Purge mode automatically or manually via double-click. Retention under 0.1g without RDT. The heavy metal housing dampens the running smoothness to an almost casual level.

The P80 is for people who want to understand what 80mm flat burrs can achieve in the cup – clear expression of the bean, defined acids, cleanly separated finish. Those who consciously choose the P80 choose against compromise. More compact and accessible than the Lagom 01, but at a high level. Those who want it know why.

Compact Grinders

Option-O Lagom Mini 2

The second generation of Option-O's most compact electric grinder. 48mm Mizen 48MS conical burrs, stepless adjustment, USB-C with PD 3.0 – meaning you can theoretically operate the grinder with a power bank. Dimensions 9.5 × 6.5 × 24 cm, weight 1.5 kg. Fits into any kitchen, any travel luggage, any kitchen island without disrupting the overall look. And still delivers grinding quality that works equally well for espresso and filter coffee.

Option-O Lagom Casa

The Lagom Casa was designed as an homage to the simple days of home barista life. A grinder that works reliably, has low retention, and delivers good coffee effortlessly. 6061 Aerospace-Grade Aluminum with anodized surface, brushless DC motor with planetary gear – designed for daily use in the home kitchen without compromising grinding quality. More compact than the P80, more character than a pure travel grinder.

Who is Option-O for?

Option-O is suitable for anyone who prioritizes precision over branding. The brand doesn't market itself with heritage stories or elaborate design awards. It makes grinders that are demonstrably and tastably good. Those looking for a compact, reliable grinder for filter coffee and occasional espresso will find a solution in the Lagom Mini 2 that hardly anyone else offers in this size. Those looking for endgame precision but don't want to go the route of iconic brands can enter the league of the EG-1 with the Lagom P80 – at a significantly lower price. Those who want to go beyond that – 102 mm, competition-level, absolute control – opt for the Lagom 01.

Those who want the object as a design piece, with watchmaking-level craftsmanship and the corresponding price range: Weber Workshops. Those who want high-level engineering at pragmatic prices: Varia. Option-O lies between these two worlds – technically uncompromising, but without the premium branding surcharge.

Endgame Comparison: Lagom 01 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Weber EG-1

Three grinders at endgame level, three different philosophies.

Weber EG-1 is the icon – 80 mm CORE Flat Burrs (magnetically mounted), PID-controlled motor, the grinder World Barista Champions work with. Design at watchmaking level, craftsmanship that doesn't look old-fashioned even after ten years. Priced in the top segment.

Option-O Lagom P80 is the newer, more pragmatic 80 mm answer – with a pre-crushing system, auger feed, auto-off, and a price significantly lower than the EG-1. Concrete features that make a difference in everyday use.

Option-O Lagom 01 plays in a league of its own. With 102 mm Blind Burrs, a 1300 W motor, and 15.3 kg weight, it's the largest of the three. Specifically optimized for modern light roasts with high clarity and nuanced sweetness. For anyone who has made light roasts their focus. Priced between the P80 and EG-1.

Those who want an icon that works universally: EG-1. Those who want 80 mm precision with clever everyday features: P80. Those who want 102 mm and light roasts as a specialization: Lagom 01. All three are good choices. The shot in the cup differs less than one might expect – but the experiences getting there are different.

What goes with it

Option-O grinders unleash their potential with thermally stable espresso machines. La Marzocco Linea Mini R or GS3 are particularly strong combinations – the grind quality of the P80 or Lagom 01 becomes apparent with a stable brew group. Rocket, ECM, or Profitec also benefit significantly. For manual lever extraction: Flair Espresso 58+2 – the precision of Option-O grinders is particularly evident with manual pressure building.

For weighing and brew workflow: Acaia Lunar or Pearl – the flow rate display shows you how the more precise grinding affects extraction. For puck prep and workflow: Normcore or Weber Workshops. For the kettle: Varia AURA Kettle with precise temperature control for filter coffee. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs (exclusive Swiss importer).
