What makes SSP the burr reference in the specialty sector
SSP is a South Korean manufacturer of high-precision burrs for specialty coffee grinders. Unlike classic Italian or German burrs – which are designed for broad market needs – SSP produces specialized geometries for specific flavor profiles: maximum clarity, maximum sweetness, or all-rounder balance.
SSP burrs have been the aftermarket standard in the global specialty scene for years. Anyone who owns a DF64, Niche Zero (with adapter), Option-O Lagom, or another compatible grinder and wants to specifically shift the flavor profile typically opts for SSP.
The Burr Profiles
SSP High Uniformity (HU) – very narrow grind distribution with low fines. The result: maximum aroma clarity, emphasized acidity differentiation, better separation of individual aroma components. Preferred for light, fruity specialty roasts.
SSP Lab Sweet V3 – profile with a bit more body and pronounced sweetness, less aroma separation. For espresso workflows where rounded sweetness and chocolate notes are in the foreground – typically medium roasts, Brazil, Honduras profiles.
SSP Multipurpose (MP) – an all-rounder between HU and Lab Sweet. Clarity and body in a balanced ratio. If you don't just brew one type of bean, but everything from dark Italian roasts to light specialty single-origins: MP.
Red Speed Coating – all three profiles in our range are available as a Red Speed variant – a hard coating that increases grinding speed, reduces heat development, and extends the lifespan of the burrs.
Which burrs for which flavor goal
Light specialty roasts, maximum clarity: SSP HU Red Speed. Brings fruity single-origins from Ethiopia, Colombia, Kenya, Costa Rica to their brightest aromatic clarity.
Medium roasts, sweetness-focused: SSP Lab Sweet V3. For chocolate-caramel notes, rounded cappuccino cups, classic espresso blends with sweetness.
All-round, multiple bean varieties in parallel: SSP Multipurpose. If your bean rotation is broad and you don't want to constantly readjust your grinder.
Compatibility
SSP 64mm burrs fit into many specialty grinders with 64mm flat burr mounts: DF64, DF64V, some Option-O models, Niche Zero with adapter, Weber Workshops Key (depending on version), G-IOTA, Specht, and others. Please check the exact compatibility of your grinder before purchasing – we are happy to help.
The change itself is mechanically manageable: remove old burrs, clean the grinding mechanism, insert new burrs, recalibrate the grind zero point. For some grinders, instructions are included or available online.

Frequently Asked Questions about SSP Burrs
SSP HU or Lab Sweet – which profile to choose?
If your beans are bright single-origins with fruit and acidity notes and you want them maximally differentiated: HU. If you brew classic espresso blends, medium roasts, chocolatey profiles and are looking for more sweetness and body: Lab Sweet V3.
Is the upgrade worth it compared to original burrs?
If you have a grinder with standard burrs and your workflow is geared towards specialty single-origins: yes, the difference is clearly audible in the cup. If you brew classic Italian roasts and are satisfied with the standard: less useful.
What does Red Speed mean?
A hard surface coating on the burrs. Effect: faster grinding (less heat in the ground coffee), longer lifespan of the cutting edges, and in many tests, a somewhat more consistent grind distribution over time.
Do SSP burrs fit in my Mahlkönig X64?
The X64 has 64mm burrs, but the mounting system is not universally compatible. We are happy to check this on a case-by-case basis.
How long do SSP burrs last?
In home use with daily use: 600–1'000 kg of bean throughput before noticeable dulling – so about 10–20 years of home use. In café operation significantly shorter (12–18 months with high volume).
Can I test SSP burrs before buying?
Direct testing in the showroom is limited because changing burrs takes time. However, we are happy to provide advice on profile characteristics and suitable bean selection. Please arrange an appointment in advance.
