A dosing funnel sits on top of the portafilter and extends its rim upwards – typically by 1–2 cm. When grinding directly into the portafilter or transferring from a dosing cup, the funnel prevents coffee grounds from falling next to the portafilter. This keeps the work surface clean, reduces coffee ground waste, and makes the workflow smoother.

Why a dosing funnel makes sense

Four practical advantages:

1. Minimize coffee ground waste: When grinding directly into the portafilter or transferring from a dosing cup, you typically lose 0.2–1 g per shot without a funnel. Over weeks, this is measurable.
2. Clean work surface: no coffee grounds on the counter or under the grinder.
3. Smoother workflow: you can spoon, WDT, and tamp without constantly having to check the portafilter.
4. Magnetic attachment: place it once, it won't slip during grinding, remove it with one hand.

For a specialty workflow with WDT, leveler, tamper, and puck screen, the dosing funnel is one of the most affordable and frequently used tools (CHF 19–39).

Standard vs. Tall Version

Standard height (Normcore Premium, Eureka Mignon, Rocket): extends the portafilter rim by approx. 1–1.5 cm. Sufficient for 18–20 g of coffee grounds with 58 mm portafilters.

Tall version (Normcore tall version): extends by approx. 2–2.5 cm. For larger doses (20–23 g), for setups with larger grinding quantities, or for workflows with transferred coffee grounds from dosing cups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a dosing funnel?

Not necessarily – many home workflows manage without one. But for a specialty workflow with WDT, direct-feed grinders, or single dosing, it is significantly more pleasant. CHF 19–39 is the investment for a cleaner work surface, less coffee ground waste, and a smoother workflow. It is now a standard tool for 95% of specialty setups.

Which dosing funnel for E61 machines?

For 58 mm portafilters – i.e., all E61 machines – you have the widest selection: Powder Filling Funnel (CHF 19, cheap), Weber Workshops Stainless Steel (CHF 29, stylish design), Normcore Premium (CHF 32, wide range), Rocket Aluminum or Black (CHF 37, matching the Rocket machine), Eureka Mignon / LIBRA / Smart (CHF 38–39, matching the Eureka grinder).

Magnetic or non-magnetic?

All modern dosing funnels are magnetic – this is standard. Advantage: the funnel sits firmly on the portafilter rim, doesn't slip during grinding or WDT. A non-magnetic funnel is an exception today and not recommended.

Motta Double Dosing Funnel – what does 53+58 mm mean?

The MOTTA Double Dosing Funnel (CHF 34) has two spout ends: a 53 mm side (fits Sage / Breville) and a 58 mm side (E61, La Marzocco). You rotate the funnel depending on the portafilter. Practical for home setups with multiple machines or for café workflows with different setups.

Normcore Standard or Tall Version?

Standard (CHF 32): height approx. 1–1.5 cm, sufficient for 18–20 g of coffee grounds. Tall Version (CHF 34): height approx. 2–2.5 cm, for larger doses (20–23 g) or setups involving transferring from dosing cups. The standard version is sufficient for a standard home setup.

What distinguishes the Eureka Smart variant?

The Eureka Smart Powder Funnel (CHF 39) is the latest variant with an improved design and better magnetic properties. Suitable for the Eureka Mignon, Atom, and Libra family. For setups that want the complete Eureka design language.
