Buy Precision Baskets & Filter Baskets Switzerland – 54 & 58 mm

The espresso emerges from the bottomless portafilter as a single, gleaming column – dark at first, then honey-coloured, calm and focused, without splashes or stray drops. Precisely this even flow is the work of a good basket: It lets water pass through the puck at the same speed everywhere.

The basket is the small component where your coffee grounds lie and through which hot water flows. In a standard basket, the holes vary in diameter and distribution. A precision basket has a laser-tested hole pattern – each hole identical, evenly distributed. The water no longer seeks an easy path but flows evenly through all the coffee. Nobody needs such a basket to pull good espresso – the original does its job. You want it because the cup becomes clearer, rounder, and denser. This is one of many possible decisions, and we respect both directions.

What a Precision Basket Changes

Espresso is extraction by weight ratio – usually 1:2, meaning about 36 g in the cup from around 18 g of coffee. How evenly this succeeds depends on how the water flows through the puck. If it flows faster through a few large holes than through the rest, channelling occurs: Some areas are over-extracted, others under-extracted – and the cup becomes sharp and thin at the same time.

A uniform hole pattern distributes the flow over the entire surface. You taste this as density, sweetness, and a round, long finish – caramel, chocolate, and nut stand out more clearly. Taste and smell are inextricably linked: A large part of what we experience as aroma arises retronasally, when the compounds rise to the olfactory mucosa during swallowing. Cleaner extraction means more of these compounds and less disturbance. Those who like light roasts will also discover the fruity, lively acidity more clearly.

It is our observation that the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile – more noticeably and affordably than many a larger upgrade. Nevertheless, we have no espresso laws. No shot is exactly repeatable because bean, humidity, and human factors change daily. The only thing that truly matters: The coffee must taste good to you.

Sizes and Doses

The size depends on your machine, the dose on your taste. The height of the basket (approx. h22 to h28) determines how much coffee can fit and how much headspace remains to the shower screen.

Size Machines At CCC
58 mm E61 (Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit), La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino, all professional machines IMS (Baristapro, Nanotech, Competition, Big Bang, Single 7–9 g), Normcore, La Marzocco, Weber Workshops, MHW-3BOMBER, Victoria Arduino, Flair
54 mm Sage, Breville IMS 54 mm (h22–h28), IMS Big Bang 54 mm, Normcore High-Extraction 54 mm, MHW-3BOMBER 54 mm
51 mm DeLonghi (Dedica, La Specialista), Smeg Normcore High-Extraction 51 mm
49 mm La Pavoni, Olympia Cremina via the Normcore Step-Down-Kit 58 → 49 mm

For double shots, there are 15, 18, 20, and 22 g – 18 g is the common starting point. For single shots, we carry 58 mm baskets for 7–9 g. The dose should roughly match the basket capacity for correct puck geometry and headspace.

The Brands in Our Assortment

IMS – the Italian Precision Manufacturer

IMS (Industria Materiali Stampati) has been manufacturing filter baskets from AISI 304 stainless steel with laser-tested hole tolerances for decades. The lines we carry as partners:

  • Baristapro – ridgeless double baskets in 15, 18, 20, and 22 g
  • Baristapro Nanotech – additionally with Nanotech quartz coating, which repels water and coffee oils, improves flow, and facilitates cleaning
  • Competition – convex basket with particularly tight tolerances, designed for maximum reproducibility
  • Big Bang – convex bottom with a denser hole pattern in the centre, which increases flow in the centre and matches the puck's shape; particularly harmonises with medium to darker roasts

Normcore – High-Extraction Filter Baskets

As an importer of Normcore, we carry the High-Extraction baskets: 0.8 mm AISI 304 stainless steel, finely laser-cut hole pattern and straight walls extending to the edge – ensuring the entire puck surface is used. The thicker wall thickness keeps the puck stiffer and prevents the bottom from bending. Each basket comes with a retaining spring, puck screen, and paper filters. Available in 51, 54, and 58 mm, from 16 to 22 g – also available in the Titanium PVD version upon request. Additionally, the Step-Down-Kit 58 → 49 mm converts a 58 mm portafilter to 49 mm – for La Pavoni and Olympia Cremina.

La Marzocco – the Original Filter Inserts

As a partner of La Marzocco, we carry the original precision filter inserts from Florence, also for the LEVA – in 7, 14, 17, and 21 g. Original geometry, tuned to the saturated group head of your La Marzocco.

Other Brands in Our Assortment

  • Weber Workshops Unibasket (58 mm, 16–28 g) – a single premium basket for a particularly wide dose range
  • Victoria Arduino Pure Brew (58 mm) – for a particularly clear, filter-like cup profile
  • MHW-3BOMBER – affordable precision baskets in 54 and 58 mm; the DEX line (Deep Extraction) is deeper for higher doses
  • E&B-LAB – the sister brand of IMS, with Nanotech quartz and a particularly large filtration surface (up to 715 holes), including an "All in One" basket
  • Flair Espresso 58 High Uniformity – with a uniform hole pattern for the Flair 58 Lever Brewer
  • Aram 2-shot Basket – an IMS Competition basket for 18 g for the hand-operated Aram Espresso Maker

Ridgeless, Convex, Competition – Briefly Explained

With or without ridge: The circumferential ridge holds the basket in the portafilter via a spring clip. Ridgeless baskets sit without this ridge – how they are held depends on the portafilter. This is a matter of attachment, not a question of good or better.

Flat, convex or deep: A convex bottom (Competition, Big Bang) curves slightly upwards and follows the shape of the puck; the denser hole pattern in the centre compensates for the fact that more coffee lies there. Deeper baskets like the MHW-3BOMBER DEX create space for higher doses.

You'll most likely notice which design benefits you most with a bottomless portafilter: there you can see the extraction directly – a uniform column instead of individual jets. Our opinion is one of many; take your time to discover what makes your cup rounder.

Which Basket Suits You

If you want to specifically improve your setup without immediately changing your machine or grinder, a precision basket is the most direct and visible step – and every budget is welcome here. The baskets from MHW-3BOMBER and IMS are affordable and precise; those looking for a single premium piece with a wide dose range will find it in the Weber Workshops Unibasket or the Victoria Arduino Pure Brew. Those who want consistency and reproducibility are well served by IMS Competition and Normcore High-Extraction; those who want an easy-care everyday basket can choose the Nanotech line. You belong here because you love coffee – not because you use a specific basket.

What Goes Well With It

A basket shows its effect best in the right tools. For bottomless brewing, where you can see the basket at work: our Portafilters & Bottomless Portafilters. To get an even puck, it's worth checking out the Tamper Collection – affordable and precise with Normcore, premium with Weber Workshops. WDT Tools, also from Normcore to the Weber Moonraker, help against clumps before tamping. Puck Screens go on top of the puck. Plus the appropriate espresso machine and grinder, and for clean baskets, the Urnex backflush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a precision basket really make a noticeable difference?

In a bottomless portafilter, usually significantly: less channeling, more even extraction, a clearer and rounder cup. Particularly noticeable with light roasts, more subtle with medium-dark roasts. It's one of many adjustments – but one of the most direct and affordable.

Which basket size fits my machine?

58 mm for all E61 machines (Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Profitec, Lelit), for La Marzocco and Victoria Arduino. 54 mm for Sage and Breville. 51 mm for DeLonghi (Dedica, La Specialista) and Smeg. 49 mm for La Pavoni and Olympia Cremina – via the Normcore Step-Down-Kit. If unsure, tell us your machine model and we'll clarify the specifications.

Which dose should I choose – 18, 20 or 22 g?

18 g is a common starting point for a double shot. 20 or 22 g for stronger or larger extractions, 15 g for smaller doses, 7–9 g for single shots. The dose should roughly match the basket capacity for correct headspace and puck geometry.

What does the Nanotech coating on IMS mean?

A Nanotech quartz coating makes the surface smoother, repels coffee oils and water, and improves flow. In practice: less adhesion, easier cleaning. The basket remains made of AISI 304 stainless steel, the coating is applied on top.

Ridgeless or with ridge – what do I need?

That depends on the portafilter. Classic portafilters hold the basket via a spring clip in the ridge. Some bottomless or special portafilters work without. If in doubt, name the portafilter model, and we'll tell you what fits.

How do I clean a precision basket?

Daily backflush without cleaner, every approximately 50 shots with cleaning agent like Urnex Cafiza. The Nanotech quartz coating significantly reduces coffee oil adhesion.

Can I see the baskets before purchasing?

Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can explore and feel the common baskets in person.

Roastery Tip

A uniform basket rewards dense, aromatic beans the most. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight brew full-bodied and round – caramel, chocolate, nut, clear in the cup. For maximum body without any acidity, stick with Very Nutty. And those who want to fully enjoy the clean extraction with fruitiness will discover a lively peach note with Wild Peach. This is our recommendation – one of many. Any bean that tastes good to you is the right one.
