IMS Big Bang Precision Filter Basket 58 mm – 27.5 mm, 22–24g (Bottomless)
The large dose for maximum body: 22–24g in the highest Big Bang version. The hole pattern, concentrated towards the center, tames the quantity and emphasizes sweetness over acidity – resulting in a rich, steady central stream in a bottomless portafilter.
No one needs a special basket for good espresso – the original basket does its job. You want it because the cup becomes sweeter, rounder, and more uniform. This is one of many possible decisions, and we respect it either way.
What makes this basket special
The Big Bang is IMS's latest idea: 585 holes concentrated towards the center of the basket – the distance between the holes increases towards the rim. This directs the flow precisely to the center and ensures extraordinarily even saturation of the entire puck, preventing channeling. You'll taste the result as significantly more sweetness, while acidity recedes – caramel, chocolate, and nut take center stage. The holes are Ø 0.30 mm with a conical cross-section; the basket is ridgeless, has a flat bottom, and an electropolished, easy-to-clean surface. Espresso is extraction by weight ratio, usually 1:2; taste and smell are inseparable, a large part of which occurs retronasally. It is our observation that the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile.

Who it's for
For all who dose high and seek maximum body – especially good with medium to darker roasts. At 27.5 mm high, this basket is intended for bottomless portafilters; it is too tall for most standard portafilters. If you want to emphasize the fruity acidity of lighter roasts, another basket is often better – we say that honestly. Every budget is welcome.
What goes with it
A must for this height: a bottomless portafilter. For an even puck: the tamper collection – affordable with Normcore, premium with Weber Workshops. Against clumps beforehand: WDT Tools. Plus the matching grinder. All other baskets: Precision Baskets Collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Big Bang hole pattern do?
585 holes are concentrated towards the center; the hole spacing increases towards the rim. This directs the flow centrally, ensures very even extraction, prevents channeling, and emphasizes sweetness while reducing acidity.
Will the 27.5 mm height fit in my portafilter?
It is designed for bottomless portafilters; for most standard portafilters with a base, the basket is too tall. If you use a standard portafilter, opt for a lower Big Bang height (21.5 / 23.5 mm).
Which roast is the Big Bang suitable for?
Medium to darker roasts come out particularly well. For very light, citrusy coffees, some experimentation is worthwhile – the Big Bang deliberately reduces acidity.
Can I see the basket before purchasing?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b).
Roastery Tip
The Big Bang emphasizes sweetness and reduces acidity – perfectly suited for full-bodied roasts. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, and – for maximum body without any acidity – Very Nutty pair particularly well. If you're looking for the fruity side of lighter roasts, the Big Bang will be less to your liking – we're honest about that too. Our recommendation, one of many.
