Buy Levelers & Distribution Tools Switzerland – 51, 54 and 58 mm

A leveler (also called a distribution tool or distributor) is a rotating tool that you place on top of the portafilter and turn to evenly level the coffee bed before tamping. The three or five blade wings on the underside of the tool distribute the ground coffee from the center outwards, creating a flat surface for the tamper. The result: more even pressure distribution during tamping, reduced channeling risk, more consistent extraction.

In the specialty workflow, the leveler often complements WDT: first WDT to break up clumps and static, then the leveler to smooth the surface, then tamping. For purist setups, WDT alone is sufficient; for workflow acceleration in coffee bars, levelers are almost standard. Coffee Coaching Club carries 10 active leveler models from three brands.

Standard vs. Gravity vs. Heavy

Standard Leveler (manual rotation): you press the leveler onto the portafilter and turn it a few times until the coffee bed surface appears even. Sufficient for home workflow. Price CHF 28–46.

Gravity Leveler (self-dosing): the tool has a preset depth – you press it onto the portafilter and it automatically stops at the correct coffee bed height. More reproducible than standard levelers, less variability between shots. Useful for specialty workflow or coffee bars with high consistency requirements. Price CHF 47–59 (MHW-3Bomber Gravity, Normcore Gravity).

Heavy Version (solid design): higher weight, more mechanical precision, durable in daily use. Normcore Heavy Coffee Distributor (CHF 59) is the heavy version in the assortment.

Which Leveler for Which Size

Portafilter Recommendation
51 mm (DeLonghi Dedica, Smeg, La Pavoni) MHW-3BOMBER 51 mm Ultra-thin (CHF 28), MHW-3BOMBER 51 mm with Walnut (CHF 34)
53.3 / 54 mm (Sage, Breville) MHW-3BOMBER 53 mm Ultra-thin (CHF 28), Normcore Gravity Distributor 53.3/54 mm (CHF 59), Normcore Heavy 53.3/54 mm (CHF 59)
58 / 58.5 mm (E61, La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino, all professional machines) MHW-3BOMBER 58 mm Ultra-thin (CHF 28), Motta 58 mm Black / Wood (CHF 42–46), Normcore Distributor Leveler (CHF 42), Normcore Gravity / Heavy 58.5 mm (CHF 59), MHW-3Bomber Gravity (CHF 47)

Workflow in Practice

Specialty workflow with WDT + Leveler:

  1. Grind into the portafilter or dosing cup
  2. Optional transfer to the portafilter
  3. WDT: 8–12 circular needle movements, break up clumps
  4. Leveler: 2–4 rotations, smooth the surface evenly
  5. Tamp with 15–20 kg force
  6. Optional place Puck Screen
  7. Insert portafilter and brew

The leveler step takes 2–3 seconds. For home setups with WDT routine: optional. For café workflow with volume pressure: very useful, because faster than WDT alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a leveler in addition to WDT?

No, not necessarily. WDT alone is sufficient for most home setups because it breaks up clumps and reduces static – which are the main causes of channeling. The leveler is a workflow accelerator: it replaces manual smoothing of the coffee bed surface with a reproducible movement. Useful for café workflow or home setups with high shot volume.

Standard Leveler or Gravity Leveler?

Standard (CHF 28–46): you have to control the pressure depth yourself – if you press too hard, you compress the coffee bed before tamping. Gravity (CHF 47–59): the tool automatically stops at the preset depth – reproducible between shots. For specialty workflow or coffee bars, Gravity is the more precise choice.

Which size for my machine?

Standard assignment: 51 mm for DeLonghi (Dedica, La Specialista) and La Pavoni. 53.3 / 54 mm for Sage and Breville. 58 / 58.5 mm for all E61 machines and La Marzocco. Important: choose a leveler diameter slightly smaller than the inner diameter of the basket so that the leveler rotates freely.

MHW-3BOMBER vs. Normcore vs. Motta?

MHW-3BOMBER: cheapest entry, good build quality for the price. Normcore: premium build, more height/weight, exclusive to CCC in Switzerland, with Gravity and Heavy variants. Motta: Italian classic, strong design, in black or wood. For beginners: MHW-3BOMBER. For specialty workflow: Normcore Gravity. For Italian design language: Motta.

What is the Normcore Heavy Distributor?

Solid stainless steel design with higher weight (CHF 59). The weight helps to evenly compress the coffee bed – also used as a pre-tamper. For home setups with demands for precision and durable construction. Available in 58.5 mm and 53.3/54 mm.

What is the workflow with the MHW-3Bomber Gravity Leveler?

You place the tool on the portafilter, press down – the spring-loaded design automatically stops at the preset depth (typically 10–12 mm above the basket bottom). You rotate it 2–4 times, done. A useful tool for workflow acceleration, CHF 47.

Can I test levelers before buying?

Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. We demonstrate the workflow with MHW-3BOMBER, Normcore, and Motta levelers – you will directly feel the difference between standard, gravity, and heavy designs. Please arrange an appointment beforehand.
