MOTTA Leveler/Distributor Wood 58 mm – Distributor before tamping, made in Italy
Set the distributor on the portafilter and give it a few turns, and you'll see the coffee grounds – just a small mound a moment ago – settle into an even layer. Only then does the tamper come into play.
A leveler (distributor) with a wood element for 58 mm portafilters, as a step before tamping.
What the Leveler Does
Freshly ground coffee rarely falls evenly into the portafilter. The leveler spreads it flat with a short turning motion before you tamp – so the water flows through the puck more evenly and the extraction becomes more balanced. The tool is made in Italy.
A leveler doesn't replace the tamper, it prepares for it. Whether you need one is up to you – there's no right or wrong, in the end what counts is that the cup tastes good. Our opinion is one of many.

What to Pair It With
After distributing comes the tamper, before it the grinder: even grinding happens in our coffee grinders, brewed on your espresso machine. Our consultation tool helps with the choice.
If you'd like to compare tampers and levelers: affordable and precise is the Normcore Collection, while the Weber Workshops Collection shows the especially finely crafted side.
Frequently Asked Questions

It spreads the coffee grounds evenly in the portafilter before you tamp. This leads to a more balanced extraction.

No. The leveler is the preliminary step; the tamper then takes care of compressing.
What portafilter size does it fit?
For 58 mm portafilters.
Can I see the leveler in person before buying?
Absolutely. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) you can experience it live. Online, we deliver within 2–4 business days, throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein.
Tip from Our Coffee Roastery
Evenly distributed, the espresso pulls through more smoothly. Our Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight bring full-bodied chocolate and nutty notes. For maximum body without acidity, the Very Nutty, and for a fruity experience, the Wild Peach. That's our recommendation – one of many.
