Coffee in Bern

Coffee Coaching Club Bern at Gerberngasse 44

At Gerberngasse 44, down in the Matte, you'll find our café and showroom. Here you drink our own coffee, take beans home and see the machines that otherwise only exist as photos in the shop - for real and at full size. We roast in Zurich; what's poured here is the same as what's on the shelf.

You can order online, in the shop or over the phone - whichever suits you. The shop isn't a detour on the way to buying; it's the reason you can order from us without hesitating. We really do exist, at one address, with a phone somebody picks up.

The Matte

The Matte lies below Bern's old town, wrapped by the Aare. A quarter you descend into: down the stairs, by Mattelift, or along the path by the water. From the Bärengraben it's five minutes on foot.

Across 175 square metres, our café and showroom share one room, plus a terrace and a gallery. That's unusual, and the reason is simple: if a machine interests you, you see it here for real, in a room where people drink coffee, and not just as a photo in the shop.

Our coffee

We roast ourselves - in Zurich Oerlikon, not here. Several times a week coffee comes from Zurich to Bern, and we pour the same coffee we sell. If you like something, you take it straight home with you.

The range runs from chocolatey, nutty espresso blends to light omniroasts with pronounced fruit that work in espresso as well as in filter. We don't state a roast date in days; we work with resting times - here's why. The full overview with origin and flavour profile is with our roasts.

Machines you usually only see as a photo

In the showroom, espresso machines and grinders stand set up. A Linea Mini is a product shot on screen - in the room it's a piece of furniture with weight, depth and a particular height under the wall cabinet. That's the difference no spec sheet delivers: size, material, build.

You don't need to arrange anything for that. Come by, drink an espresso, have a look around. You can order afterwards online or right here in the shop.

Among others we carry La Marzocco, Rocket Espresso, ECM, Profitec and Bezzera in machines, and Mahlkönig, Eureka, Comandante, Varia, Option-O and Weber Workshops in grinders. Plus Flair Espresso, Apax Labs, Subminimal, Normcore and Loveramics. Which models are currently set up in Bern, we'll tell you on the phone - not every one stands at both locations.

We are the exclusive Swiss importer for Varia, Apax Labs, Weber Workshops, Normcore, Subminimal, Loveramics and Flair Espresso - in Switzerland you get these brands only through us, warranty and spare parts included.

Advice and comparison

When you're torn between two machines, a conversation already clears up a lot: how many cups a day, milk or not, how much space do you have, what budget, what maintenance comes along in five years. That's often sorted in a few minutes.

And if you'd rather taste the differences, there's our Espresso Machine and Grinder Comparison – in Bern on Mondays, with an hour reserved just for you.

Give us a call, write to us or come by. If you'd like it in depth, book a consultation - then someone is reserved for you and takes the time. If you want to read up first: our machine and grinder comparison puts the models side by side.

For quick questions in between there's also Jackson, our AI advisor. He knows the range and answers even when we're closed.

Private barista courses and team events

We currently teach privately only: you alone, the two of you, or as a group from your circle or your team. No open course with strangers, no programme that's the same for everyone - we go by what you want to be able to do and which equipment you'll be working with afterwards. Bring your own machine if you like. In German or English.

For companies there's the team-building coffee experience and the coffee tasting for up to 18 people. Dates and prices are in the overview of our workshops and team events; more about the course itself is in the post on the barista course in Bern.

Frequently asked questions

Are you a shop or an online store?

Both, and the one because of the other. We have two locations - Bern and Zurich Oerlikon - and we roast in Zurich ourselves. Most of our sales run online; the shops are the reason that works. You can order online, in the shop or over the phone.

Where exactly are you in Bern?

Gerberngasse 44, 3011 Bern, in the Matte quarter below the old town. Five minutes on foot from the Bärengraben, two from the Mattelift. Find your way to us.

When are you open?

Monday to Saturday from 10h to 18h. Closed Sundays.

Do you roast in Bern?

No. Our roastery is in Zurich Oerlikon. In Bern we have the café, the showroom and sales - the coffee is the same.

How does the coffee get from Zurich to Bern?

Several times a week. So the shelf in Bern isn't an interim store.

Can I drink coffee at your place or only buy it?

Both. You can drink an espresso, take beans home, order a machine and in between have a look at what's in the showroom.

Do I have to come by before ordering online?

No. Range, specifications, advice and purchase all run online. The shop is there in case you'd like to see a machine for real once, or simply fancy a good espresso.

Can I see machines on site?

Looking around and having individual machines shown to you briefly: gladly. If you'd like to test several espresso machines side by side at your own pace, there's our Espresso Machine and Grinder Comparison for that: an hour reserved just for you, in Bern on Mondays with machines from La Marzocco, Rocket Espresso, Arkel and WPM. Because that can't happen spontaneously while the café is running, the comparison is by appointment.

Where can I park?

The blue zone applies in the Matte quarter. The lanes are narrow and spaces aren't always free - with bus 12 to the Bärengraben or the Mattelift from the Münsterplattform you're usually there faster.

Is there a second location?

Yes, in Zurich Oerlikon at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. The showroom there is larger. The roastery is part of production and isn't open to visitors.
