Olympia Express Puck Prep Tool 54mm – Distribution Tool for Maximatic, Made in Switzerland
You dose your coffee into the Maximatic portafilter, press the tamper, and pull the shot – and the espresso flows faster on one side than the other. Channeling. A clump in the puck, a depression, an inconsistency. This is exactly where the Olympia Puck Prep Tool comes in. With fine stainless steel needles, guided by a wooden handle from Schwanden, you break up clumps and evenly distribute the grind in the 54mm basket. What sounds like a detail determines the aroma – or bitterness – in the cup.
What makes this tool special
Clean Distribution before Tamping
Freshly ground coffee doesn't fall evenly into the basket. Clumps, small valleys, and dense corners form. When you then tamp, the puck looks even on top – but it isn't on the bottom. During extraction, the water takes the path of least resistance, and the espresso gets bitter notes in one spot and thin flavor in another. The Puck Prep Tool breaks up these clumps before tamping and homogeneously distributes the grind. The result: consistent extraction, no channeling, more sweetness.
Swiss Manufacture, Olympia Style
Wooden handle in the familiar Olympia look, stainless steel needles, all from Schwanden in the canton of Glarus. Just like the Maximatic itself: no superfluous designs, just the tool that does its job. Typically Olympia: understated and built for longevity.

Three ways to Puck Distribution – honestly compared
For puck distribution, we offer three legitimate options that cater to different needs – and frankly, three very different price levels.
Affordable and proven: Normcore
The Normcore WDT Tool has been the tool for most home baristas to get into the WDT workflow for years. Solidly built, multiple fine needles, magnetic stand. Functionally, it does what you expect from a WDT tool. If you simply want even distribution without a premium surcharge, this is a good choice.
Swiss Original: Olympia Express
This tool here. Wooden handle in Olympia aesthetics, from Schwanden, manufactured in the same factory as your Maximatic. For those who want to keep their Maximatic setup consistent – machine, tamper, distribution tool, all from the same house. Price-wise, it's significantly above the Normcore, but below the Weber premium level. If you appreciate Swiss craftsmanship and aesthetic consistency, this is an honest choice.
Premium Level: Weber Workshops Moonraker
The Weber Workshops Moonraker works differently from a classic WDT tool: rotating needles, precise geometry, significantly larger investment. For those who want the endgame of puck distribution and are willing to spend significantly more for it. Surprisingly elegant in workflow, especially for professionals and ambitious home baristas who want to prepare every shot reproducibly.
Our opinion: For 90% of Maximatic owners, the Normcore WDT tool is functionally completely sufficient. If you want the Swiss manufacture setup, choose Olympia. If you work at Weber premium level, you usually already have a Linea Micra or larger in your setup anyway.
Who this tool is made for
For Maximatic owners who want to make their shot more consistent and value Swiss manufacturing. If you're just getting into the WDT workflow and want to see if it makes a difference, you can do that with the cheaper Normcore tool – the learning effect is the same. But if you already know that WDT is part of your workflow and want a tool for the next 15 years that matches your Swiss manufactured machine, this is the right choice.
Accessories that fit the Maximatic setup
Original Tamper Maximatic 54 mm (red or black) from the Olympia Express Collection. Tamping mat: affordable from the Normcore Collection or as a Swiss original also from Olympia. Dosing Funnel for clean filling of the basket: Olympia original 54 mm or Normcore Dosing Funnel, Premium the Weber Workshops Dosing Cup. Grinders crucial for grind quality: Grinder Collection. For precise dosing: Acaia scales.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does WDT mean?
WDT stands for Weiss Distribution Technique, named after John Weiss. The principle: fine needles are moved through the ground coffee in the portafilter to break up clumps and evenly distribute the grind. The result is a homogeneous puck that extracts evenly.
Does the tool also fit other 54mm portafilters?
Yes. 54 mm is a standard size for many home espresso machines (Maximatic, Breville/Sage, some Saeco models). The tool works in all portafilters of this size, as it fits the inner diameter of the basket.
What is the difference between the Olympia WDT tool and the Normcore WDT tool?
Functionally very similar. The Olympia tool is Swiss manufacturing with a wooden handle, the Normcore tool is Asian mass production with a stainless steel handle. Both have fine stainless steel needles. The price difference mainly reflects the place of manufacture and aesthetics, less the function.
How do I clean the Puck Prep Tool?
Tap it briefly after each use, occasionally rinse with warm water. Do not put the wooden handle in the dishwasher, otherwise the wood will suffer.
Where can I buy the Puck Prep Tool or see it live?
Online via coffeecoachingclub.ch with delivery in 2–4 working days to Switzerland and Liechtenstein. On-site in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44, 3011 Bern) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b, 8050 Zurich). Click and Collect possible. Financing possible.
Roastery Tip
We've been using WDT workflows in our showrooms for years because it allows us to work more reproducibly. But it's not a miracle cure: if the grinder doesn't grind evenly or the beans are old, even the best distribution tool won't make a difference. The order in the learning curve, as we see it: first, fresh beans (roast date 7–28 days), second, a good grinder, third, stable water quantity and brew ratio, fourth, tamping, and fifth, puck prep. If you skip step 1, you won't gain much with distribution tools. For beans for the Maximatic, we recommend the Nutty Delight – it harmonizes wonderfully with the heat exchanger's aroma profile.
