Arkel Coast vs. Arkel Tide

Arkel Coast vs. Arkel Tide – Two Dual-Boiler Espresso Machines from Porto, Compared

A quiet hiss, steam caught in the light, the calm before the first sip: Arkel Coast and Arkel Tide, two dual-boilers from Porto – available in Switzerland.

Your hand rests on the paddle, or your eyes follow the needle valve, while the steam rises in a fine thread. Somewhere between the first click of the switch and the first espresso lies exactly the moment that makes it worth getting up a few minutes earlier in the morning.

In our showrooms in Bern and Zurich, both machines often stand side by side – same origin, same attitude, and yet two quite different answers to the question of what a dual-boiler can be today.

Arkel builds in Porto, Portugal – uncompromising, as they say themselves: entirely stainless steel instead of copper or brass in the water circuit, every screw traceable rather than hidden. Coast and Tide share this foundation completely.

What separates them isn't better or worse, but the statement each of the two makes. Our opinion on this is one of many – in the end, what counts is the feeling that arises when you walk into the kitchen in the morning and see the machine.

The saturated group head – why the principle matters

Both machines work with a saturated group head instead of a classic E61 system. The difference lies in the physics: with a saturated group, the entire mass surrounding the water is at temperature the whole time, not just the flow channel. That produces a calmer, more stable temperature profile from shot to shot.

That's our observation as a roastery and importer working with different systems every day – others see it differently, and that's fine too. In the end, all that matters is whether the coffee tastes good in the cup.

Two boilers, one idea: steam and brewing separated

Dual-boiler means that steam water and brew water are brought to their respective temperatures simultaneously and independently of each other in separate chambers. For you, that means milk foam and espresso no longer have to compete for the same temperature.

Whichever temperature you choose for the shot also helps decide which aromas release from the ground coffee – higher temperature brings more body, lower temperature more complexity and finesse. Coast and Tide both operate exactly within this window, just with different tools.

Arkel Coast – the paddle, the ritual, control by hand

The Coast works with a twin vibratory pump and an electrically boosted saturated group head with its own heating elements right in the group. You control the flow by hand via the paddle, while the pressure gauge shows you in real time what's actually reaching the coffee puck.

That turns every shot into a small, deliberate movement – no presetting and leaning back, but genuine hands-on shaping. A 0.7-liter brew boiler and 1-liter steam boiler provide stamina even through several shots in a row; after around 12 minutes, the Coast is ready.

The waiting is part of it, by the way: a large part of the anticipation for the coffee happens in the mind, the brain releases dopamine at the moment of expecting it, not only at the first sip.

Arkel Tide – the gear pump and the fine curve

The Tide replaces the vibratory pump with a genuine gear pump. Instead of pulsing, it builds a continuous, nearly silent pressure – a detail you hear and feel more than you explain it.

Using a needle valve on the pump and programmable pre-infusion, you set the flow curve once and then recall it shot after shot. With a 0.5-liter brew boiler and 0.7-liter steam boiler, the Tide is more compact than the Coast, and with a heat-up time of under 9 minutes, it's also noticeably quicker to get ready.

Anyone who prefers to judge extraction by weight ratio rather than by time alone – our standard is 1:2 – finds in the Tide's programmable curve a tool that supports exactly this kind of repeatability, as much as is possible with a living product like coffee.

No shot is ever quite identical, after all: the bean, the humidity, and you yourself will be a little different again tomorrow than today.

Who is the Arkel Coast for?

The Coast suits anyone who loves the ritual done by hand: the paddle under your fingers, control over the flow held in your own feel rather than hidden in a menu.

Whether you've been making espresso at home for a long time or are just really diving in, it doesn't matter – the Coast doesn't require prior experience, only the desire to develop your own feel for the flow over time.

Anyone who likes a kitchen appliance to also be a statement on the counter finds a machine with visible character here.

Who is the Arkel Tide for?

The Tide suits anyone who would rather program profiling once than readjust it by hand on every shot – setting up the curve and then recalling it again and again. It's more compact than the Coast and quicker to get ready, which is also pleasant for mornings with little lead time.

Equally welcome is anyone simply curious about the quieter, continuous gear pump – a difference you'll feel faster in your own living room than you can read about it.

What goes with it

Both machines live and breathe through the grinder in front of them. For anyone who wants it affordable and precise: the Varia VS3 from our Varia Coffee Grinders Collection, or a hand grinder from Comandante or Timemore. Anyone looking for a larger burr surface and stepless adjustment: the Varia VS6 from the same collection, a Weber Workshops EG-1, or an Option-O Lagom.

The same logic applies to the scale. For anyone who wants it compact, precise, and affordable: the Normcore Scales. Anyone who wants an app, flow-rate display, and Bluetooth connectivity: the Acaia Collection. Both price levels lead to good coffee – no budget is just a starting point, each one is already part of the journey.

Frequently asked questions about Arkel Coast and Tide

What specifically sets the Arkel Coast apart from the Arkel Tide?

The biggest technical difference lies in the pump: the Coast works with a twin vibratory pump, the Tide with a gear pump that builds pressure continuously rather than in pulses. On top of that come different boiler volumes (Coast 0.7 L brew boiler plus 1 L steam boiler, Tide 0.5 L plus 0.7 L) and a shorter heat-up time for the Tide (under 9 instead of around 12 minutes).

The profiling tool also differs: with the Tide, you control the flow via a needle valve with programmable pre-infusion; with the Coast, directly by hand via the paddle. Both are dual-boilers with a saturated group head and come from the same workshop in Porto.

Can I see the Arkel Coast or Tide before buying?

Yes. Both models are in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b) – you can experience them there live and feel the difference between the two pump systems directly. A personal consultation is possible but not required: buying online via coffeecoachingclub.ch remains the usual way.

Does the Arkel Tide really have a gear pump?

Yes. The Tide works with a genuine gear pump instead of the vibratory pump usually found in espresso machines. That produces a continuous, nearly silent pressure curve instead of pulsing – noticeable especially during pressure profiling and with the programmable pre-infusion.

Where are the Arkel Coast and Tide made?

Both machines are made in Porto, Portugal, largely from European components, entirely in stainless steel instead of copper or brass in the water circuit. Arkel describes its own standard as uncompromising – every screw is meant to stay traceable and repairable, not just at the time of purchase, but for years.

Which coffee grinder suits the Arkel Coast or Tide?

Both machines pair well with single-dose grinders like the Varia VS3 or VS6, with hand grinders from Comandante or Timemore, and with flat-burr grinders like the Weber Workshops EG-1 or an Option-O Lagom. Which grinder ends up being right depends less on the machine than on your daily routine and how much effort you want to put in each morning.

How do delivery, the barista course, and financing work?

Delivery is nationwide across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein, usually within 2 to 4 business days. Buying an Arkel Coast or Tide includes a private barista course, about 5 minutes of extraction philosophy and espresso ritual, tailored entirely to your machine. Financing is also possible for both models.

You'll find both models in our Arkel Collection. As a partner of Arkel, we carry the Coast and Tide directly in our range. We're happy to answer questions in advance at office@coffeecoachingclub.ch or on coffeecoachingclub.ch – and anyone unsure can find a first point of reference with our coffee machine advisor tool.

Roastery Tip

For dual-boilers like the Coast and Tide, which bring plenty of body and stability, we especially recommend Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight from our roastery – dense, aromatic, with chocolate and nut in the finish. Anyone looking for maximum body without noticeable acidity is right with Very Nutty.

And for anyone curious about a fruity experience: Wild Peach is exactly this discovery on the side, lively and quite different from the first two. This, too, is just our recommendation as a roastery – one of many possible ones.
