Grind by Weight vs. Single Dosing – Which Grinder is Right for You?
Grind by Weight vs. Single Dosing – Which grinder is right for you?
Sunday morning, 7:30. The kitchen is quiet, the light soft, a kettle is somewhere starting to boil. You stand in front of your grinder and, without thinking, make a philosophical choice. Do you add fresh beans and weigh them yourself – or do you let the machine do the work, because it knows exactly when to stop? Both methods lead to excellent espresso. But they feel different. And they suit different people.
Two Philosophies at a Glance
| Aspect | Single Dosing | Grind by Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Bean handling | Hopper-less, freshly weighed per shot | Bean hopper plus load cell |
| Dosing | Manually on external scale | Automatically via integrated scale |
| Accuracy | Depends on your scale and routine | Typically ±0.1 to ±0.2 g |
| Freshness per cup | Maximum | Very good, provided hopper is emptied quickly |
| Bean change | Seconds | Hopper needs to be emptied and purged |
| Retention | Very low, often under 0.5 g | Slightly higher, model-dependent |
| Workflow | Ritual, deliberate process | Fast, one button press |
| Typical application | Espresso, filter, cold brew interchangeably | Daily shots, often milk-based drinks |
Single Dosing – The Conscious Ritual
Single dose grinders were built for people who want to know exactly what goes into their cup. No bean supply slowly degassing over days. No blend of old and new beans. You put in exactly what you want to grind now. What the grinder gets is completely ground – that's the point.
These grinders are often vertically designed, with minimal retention. They switch from one bean to another within seconds. For people who live with different roast profiles, switch between espresso and filter, or simply like the workshop character, there's hardly anything more satisfying.
Advantages of Single Dosing
Maximum freshness per shot. Lightning-fast bean changes. Very low retention. Full control over the dose. Workshop character that attracts many people. Conscious workflow that is part of the coffee ritual.
Disadvantages of Single Dosing
You weigh each dose yourself – an external scale is required. Static charge can be an issue (RDT with a drop of water helps). A few extra seconds of effort per shot. Less suitable for high-frequency café workflows.
Single Dose Grinders from Our Range
We focus on three brands that we believe in and whose grinders are used daily in our showrooms.
Varia – from our Varia Collection
The Varia Collection offers an honest approach to the single dose world – with three models that clearly differentiate themselves.
The VS3 is the compact, quiet version with 48mm 6-core conical burrs made of high-alloy stainless steel, 170 RPM, and stepless adjustment in 10-micron increments. It has a very clean geometry with a 76.5° outlet angle and very low retention – electric, precise, with clear operation.
The VS4 takes it up a notch: 53mm 6-core conical burrs, a 200W brushless motor with Planetary Gearbox and variable speed from 150 to 300 RPM, active ionization against static charge, retention of 0.1 to 0.2 g without RDT and 0.01 to 0.03 g with RDT. It is the all-purpose grinder of the family and effortlessly switches between espresso, pour-over, and cold brew.
The VS6 is in a different league: 58mm flat steel burrs (Supernova) as standard, upgradeable to 63mm conical burrs, 300W brushless motor with variable RPM from 500 to 1600 in 100-step increments, 5-micron adjustment, magnetic dosing cup, ~63 dB noise level, 80g hopper. It is the flagship of the series.
You can find out which model suits you on our Varia VS3 vs VS4 vs VS6 comparison page. We are the exclusive Swiss importer of Varia.
Weber Workshops – from our Weber Workshops Collection
The Weber EG-1 from our Weber Workshops Collection is what many call the endgame of the single dose world. 80mm Weber-proprietary flat burrs, visually a statement, technically uncompromising. It's not built for everyone – but for those who want it, there's hardly anything comparable. Those interested in the EG-1 can find a direct comparison on our Endgame comparison page. We are the exclusive Swiss importer of Weber Workshops.
Option-O – from our Option-O Collection
The Option-O Collection brings two grinders into play with the Lagom series that set standards in the single dose segment. The Lagom Casa is compact, quiet, with very clear operation – a tool for home that doesn't impose itself. The Lagom P80 is the uncompromising version: large burrs, high clarity, the full range of burr options.
Grind by Weight – The Quiet Precision
Grind by Weight grinders are built for people who pull espresso daily and want to get rid of the mental burden of weighing. An integrated load cell under the portafilter holder measures the actual weight of the ground coffee during grinding – not the time, not the volume. When the grinder reaches the programmed target weight in grams, it stops. Mahlkönig introduced this idea to the market a few years ago, and now several manufacturers build Grind by Weight grinders in different classes.
Advantages of Grind by Weight
Automatic weighing in grams, without an external scale. Very high consistency from shot to shot, typical tolerance of ±0.1 to ±0.2 g. Fast workflow in the morning. Convenient solution for high-frequency use. Ideal if several people in the household pull espresso, because no routine needs to be taught.
Disadvantages of Grind by Weight
Hopper beans lose aroma over days. Bean changes require purging and waste a few beans. More expensive than purely time-based grinders with a hopper. For some models, minimize vibration in the setup environment (Vibration Filtering Algorithm in the Mazzer Mini G helps significantly here).
Grind by Weight Grinders from Our Range
Eureka – from our Eureka Collection
The Eureka Mignon Libra is the compact version for home. 55mm flat hardened steel burrs, 1350 RPM, integrated load cell with ±0.2 g tolerance, ACE system against static charge, Silent Range Technology for quiet operation. The Libra 65 All Purpose extends the concept to 65mm burrs and a large King Size Adjustment Wheel – moving beyond pure espresso towards filter. Both come from Florence, both are Italian in the best sense of the word.
Mazzer – from our Mazzer Collection
The Mazzer Mini G from our Mazzer Collection is the modern reissue of an icon. 64mm 233M burrs made of special hardened steel, integrated load cell with ±0.1 g tolerance, Vibration Filtering Algorithm against table vibrations, Anti-Static system, 280g hopper for home use. It is built as a light commercial grinder, but feels just as at home in an ambitious kitchen as in a small café.
Mahlkönig – from our Mahlkönig Collection
Mahlkönig has brought Grind by Weight to maturity. The Mahlkönig E64 WS brings the concept into a compact form with 64mm burrs and high precision. Those planning commercially or wanting to synchronize multiple machines should look at the E65W GbS and E80W GbS – sync-capable models that communicate wirelessly with compatible La Marzocco espresso machines. From Hamburg, with German engineering and a depth of service that you feel in everyday life.
Which Path for Whom
The question is rarely technical. It's a question of lifestyle. We see it daily in our showrooms.
Single Dosing suits you if: you like to switch between beans, between brewing methods, between moods. If you value ritual. If you like the idea that every cup starts from scratch. If you want the workshop character.
Grind by Weight suits you if: you pull several shots daily, often work with the same beans, enjoy preparing milk-based drinks, and value consistency more than the last ounce of freshness. If you want to be quick in the morning. If several people in the household pull espresso.
Nobody needs one or the other. You want it – or you don't. Those interested in Grind by Weight for home can find detailed model comparisons on our Home Grind by Weight Grinder Comparison. And if you want to think about the setup as a whole, our Coffee Machine Consultation Tool will help you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is more accurate – Single Dosing or Grind by Weight?
With a good external scale from our Normcore Collection or an Acaia, you can achieve comparable accuracy with single dosing as with a Grind by Weight grinder. The difference is not in the precision itself, but in whether the grinder does the work or you do.
Which Grind by Weight grinder is right for me?
For compact household setups: the Eureka Mignon Libra. For more reserve and robustness: the Mazzer Mini G with 64mm 233M burrs or the Mahlkönig E64 WS. For high-frequency café setups with La Marzocco Sync: the Mahlkönig E65W GbS or E80W GbS.
Which Single Dose grinder do you recommend?
The Varia VS3 with 48mm conical burrs for an honest introduction. The Varia VS4 as an all-purpose grinder with 53mm conical burrs, variable RPM, and active ionization – the choice for people who switch between espresso and filter. The Varia VS6 with 58mm flat burrs (upgradeable to 63mm conical) brings more clarity and reserve. The Weber EG-1, the Option-O Lagom Casa, and the Lagom P80 are the uncompromising statements of the single dose world.
Can a Grind by Weight grinder also do Single Dose?
Technically yes – you can empty the hopper and add beans one by one. Practically, however, this is not its strength: the geometry and retention are not optimized for pure single dosing. Those who want both usually choose a pure single dose grinder or a modern hybrid solution.
Can I see the grinders on-site before purchasing?
Yes. In Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), most models are on display and in use. You are welcome to bring your own beans.
Roastery Tip
In the roastery, depending on the day, we grind with both worlds. On quiet mornings with a Lagom or a Varia, because the ritual is worth it. On busy days with a Mahlkönig or Mazzer Mini G, because convenience matters. Both ways work – if the bean is right. Our recommendation for a rich and dense start: Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight. For maximum body without acidity: Very Nutty. For a fruity discovery on the side: Wild Peach. You can find the entire selection in our Coffee Bean Collection. Our recommendation is one of many – any bean you enjoy drinking is the right one.
