IMS Big Bang Precision Filter Basket 58 mm – 21.5 mm, 14–16 g (Bottomless)
In a bottomless portafilter, the espresso converges to the center and flows smoothly, almost velvety – the Big Bang directs the flow precisely there. Even with a lean 14–16g dose, you'll taste what it's all about: sweetness that comes to the forefront.
No one needs a special basket for good espresso – the original basket does its job. You want it because the cup becomes sweeter, rounder, and more uniform. This is one of many possible decisions, and we respect both directions.
What makes this basket special
The Big Bang is IMS's latest idea: 585 holes concentrated towards the center of the basket – the distance between the holes increases towards the rim. This specifically directs the flow centrally and ensures exceptionally even flow through the entire puck, preventing channeling. You'll taste the result as significantly more sweetness, while acidity recedes – caramel, chocolate, and nuts come to the forefront. The holes are Ø 0.30 mm with a conical cross-section; the basket is ridgeless, has a flat bottom, and an electropolished, easy-to-clean surface. Espresso is extraction via a weight ratio, usually 1:2; taste and smell are inseparable, a large part arises retronasally. It is our observation that the choice of basket fundamentally changes the aroma profile.

Who it's for
For anyone who loves a sweet, round espresso – especially good with medium to darker roasts. Developed for bottomless portafilters; the low 21.5 mm height usually fits standard portafilters as well. If you want to emphasize the fruity acidity of lighter roasts, another basket is often a better choice – we're honest about that. Every budget is welcome.
What goes with it
Best in a bottomless portafilter. To level the puck: the tamper collection – affordable with Normcore, premium with Weber Workshops. Against clumps beforehand: WDT Tools. Plus the matching grinder. All other baskets: Precision Baskets Collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Big Bang hole pattern do?
585 holes concentrate towards the center; the hole spacing increases towards the rim. This directs the flow centrally, ensures very even extraction, prevents channeling, and emphasizes sweetness while acidity recedes.
Which roast is the Big Bang suitable for?
Medium to darker roasts come out particularly well. For very light, citrusy coffees, some experimentation is worthwhile – the Big Bang deliberately reduces acidity.
Standard or bottomless portafilter?
Developed for bottomless portafilters. The low 21.5 mm height usually fits standard portafilters with a bottom as well.
Can I see the basket before buying?
Yes, in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b).
Roastery Tip
The Big Bang emphasizes sweetness and reduces acidity – perfectly suited for full-bodied roasts. From our coffee roastery, Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, and – for maximum body without any acidity – Very Nutty pair particularly well. Those seeking the fruity side of lighter roasts will find less satisfaction with the Big Bang – honestly speaking. Our recommendation, one of many.
