Option-O Lagom P80 – 80mm Flat Burr Single-Dose Espresso Grinder with PCS

You put 18 grams into the hopper. The auger grips the beans and slowly feeds them towards the crusher – the Pre-Crushing System pre-breaks them before they reach the actual grinding burrs. Only then do the 80mm Mizen Blind Burrs come into play, rotating at your chosen RPM level, and grinding coffee grounds that feel different from what you're used to: more homogeneous, cleaner, without clumps. The knocker clears the chamber at the end, and the auto-off stops the motor as soon as the torque drops. Dynamic retention is under 0.1 grams. You switch beans tomorrow, and nothing from today's remains.

The Lagom P80 is the latest grinder from Option-O in Sydney, Australia – unveiled in October 2025, delivered since March 2026. It is the consistent successor to the Lagom P64: same single-dose philosophy, same design language, but every internal component newly developed. The key difference from other 80mm grinders: the Pre-Crushing System. The beans are broken up before the main grinding process, which makes the particle distribution measurably more uniform and relieves the motor. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Option-O in Switzerland.

The Pre-Crushing System

In classic grinding, whole beans directly hit the rotating burrs. The bean is broken down in a fraction of a second – with heat generation, uneven load on the burrs, and a particle distribution that scatters more widely than it should. The P80's PCS steps in before this: an integrated pre-crusher within the burrs themselves breaks the bean into several larger fragments. These fragments then enter the main grinding chamber more uniformly and controllably.

What this brings to the cup: tighter particle distribution, fewer extreme values (both fines and boulders), more consistent extractions. Especially with light to medium roasts and dense beans, the difference is noticeable – clarity without losing sweetness. Our observation after months with the P80 in the showroom: it is particularly exciting for modern espresso light and filter brews. Those who prefer classic Italian espressos with a lot of body may find more texture with a grinder without PCS. This is our view, one of many.

Mizen 80OM Blind Burrs – a Burr Geometry for Espresso and Filter

The Mizen 80OM Blind Burrs are a further development of the well-known Mizen Flat Burrs. OM stands for Omni – suitable for the entire preparation range from fine espresso to coarse cold brew. "Blind" refers to the mounting method: the burrs are held magnetically without screws. This makes changing them easier and eliminates the indentations around screw heads where coffee residue normally collects.

The P80 is compatible with 3-Pin-Magnetic-Blind-Mount and with 2-screw mounting. This opens up the possibility of switching to alternative burr sets later – if you ever want to explore a different flavor profile without replacing the entire grinder.

RPM-Dial from 300 to 1700, brushless DC Motor

The stepped RPM dial allows precise and repeatable adjustments between 300 and 1700 revolutions per minute. Lower RPMs (around 400-600) tend to produce fewer fines and more clarity – good for light roasts and filters. Higher RPMs (around 1200-1500) produce a bit more texture and can be pleasant with classic espresso blends. The specific setting is a matter of experimentation, and that's exactly what the stepped dial is built for: you find your value and can precisely return to it at any time.

The 500W brushless DC motor delivers industrial torque with remarkably low noise levels. Together with the heavy aluminum housing, it creates a grinder that doesn't audibly falter even with dense beans and fine grind settings. In the showroom, we regularly run the P80 in the background for tastings – conversations remain possible.

Who the Lagom P80 is for

The P80 is suitable for home baristas and small cafés who consistently work single-dose and are looking for a grinder that can cleanly process both espresso and filter. Anyone who switches between bright Nordic-style roasts, classic espressos, and occasional pour-overs will find a wide range of applications in the 80OM Omni geometry.

The P80 is not for everyone. Those looking for a simpler, more affordable single-dose grinder will find an excellent choice in the Varia VS3 Gen2 or VS6 (exclusive Swiss importer). Those who want the icon with the broadest community and alternative burr sets: Weber Workshops EG-1. Those who specifically focus on modern light roasts and are looking for the 102mm flagship dimension: Option-O Lagom 01. A dedicated comparison: EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.

The P80 is a grinder for those who know the Lagom philosophy and want to experience it in its next iteration – with PCS, magnetic burr mounting, and the versatility of the Omni burrs. Those who want it, know why.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Pre-Crushing System (PCS) of the Lagom P80 do?

The PCS breaks the beans into larger fragments before the main grinding process. The auger feed moves the beans controllably to the integrated pre-crusher before they reach the main burrs. The result is a tighter particle distribution with fewer extreme values – especially measurable with light roasts and filter brews.

Is the P80 suitable for espresso and filter?

Yes. The Mizen 80OM Burrs are Omni-burrs, deliberately developed for the entire brewing range. From very fine for espresso to coarse for cold brew, the stepless adjustment covers everything. The Omni geometry particularly shines with lighter roasts and modern espresso light blends.

How loud is the Lagom P80?

Despite its 500W brushless DC motor and high torque, the P80 remains remarkably quiet. The heavy CNC aluminum housing dampens vibrations, and the motor operates without harsh frequencies. In the showroom, the grinder runs during tastings – conversations remain possible.

Can I change the burrs?

Yes. The P80 uses a magnetic blind burr mounting system that supports both 3-Pin-Magnetic and 2-screw burrs. Changing them is tool-less and done in a few minutes. Rapid Zero Calibration with a safety zero limiter ensures you quickly return to your reference point after changing.

What is the difference to the Lagom P64?

The P80 shares the design language of the P64 but has completely newly developed internals: 80mm burrs instead of 64mm, integrated PCS with auger feed, magnetic burr mounting, redesigned knocker, torque-sensing auto-off, stepped RPM dial from 300 to 1700 instead of stepless. The P64 remains an excellent grinder; the P80 is the current iteration with the latest Mizen concept.

How does the P80 differ from the Weber EG-1?

Both are 80mm flat burr grinders at flagship level, but with different philosophies. The EG-1 (since 2015) is the icon with a large community and many alternative burr sets. The P80 brings a newer concept with PCS and auger feed that further narrows the particle distribution. A detailed comparison is available on our page EG-1 vs. Lagom P80 vs. Lagom 01.

Can I see the Option-O Lagom P80 before buying?

Yes. The P80 is in the showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Bringing your own beans is expressly welcome – this way, you can experience the P80 directly with your reference bean.

How long does delivery take in Switzerland?

2 to 4 working days throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zurich is possible at any time. Shipping is free for orders over CHF 60. Financing via Heylight possible.

Where can I buy the Option-O Lagom P80 in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club, partner of Option-O. Via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich.

Roastery Tip

The P80 runs regularly in our showroom, and we observe how different beans react to the 80OM Omni geometry. At about 500-700 RPM with light roasts like our Wild Peach, you get a clear, defined aroma separation – fruity peaks, clean acidity. For Cozy Chocolate as an espresso, we like to test between 1200 and 1500 RPM – the chocolate depth remains, with an additional clarity in the middle that is often lost with smaller grinders. Nutty Delight is a reliable companion on the P80 at medium RPM. Those looking for maximum fruitiness in light single origins can experiment with lower RPMs – the character of the bean shows through more clearly without losing sweetness. This is our recommendation, one of many.
