Slayer Espresso
Slayer Espresso Switzerland – Flow Profiling from Seattle
You place your hand on the paddle of the Slayer Single Group. Three positions: Pre-Brew, Full Brew, Stop. You start left – the patented Needle Valve restricts the water flow to a fraction, the puck slowly saturates, you hear no hiss, only a quiet trickle. Eight, nine, ten seconds. Then you flip the paddle to full load. Full 9 bar, the shot begins to flow – dark, viscous, with a dense crema, as only occurs when the pre-infusion has been long enough. This is Slayer: Flow profiling as a central idea, not an add-on.
Slayer Espresso was founded in Seattle, Washington in 2007 by a team including Eric Perkunder, Dan Urwiler, Devin Walker (Engineering), and Jason Prefontaine (Investor and current CEO). The mission: not to copy the next Italian coffee machine, but to rethink espresso. The answer: a patented Needle Valve at the grouphead that controls the water flow throughout the extraction (instead of just modulating pressure). In 2009, Slayer was first presented to a wider professional audience at the SCA conference in Atlanta – simultaneously with the World Barista Championship. With its Needle-Valve system, Slayer popularized the concept of manual pressure and flow profiling in the professional segment. Since December 2017, Slayer has been majority-owned by the La Cimbali Group (Italy) – the machines are still handcrafted in Seattle, with the option of complete customization in wood, color, and metal accents. Coffee Coaching Club offers the Slayer Single-Group program in Switzerland, with showrooms in Bern and Zurich for personal consultation and demo by appointment.
What makes Slayer special
Three things. First: Flow profiling as a core idea. The patented Needle Valve sits directly at the grouphead and reduces the flow to a fraction, while the pump continues to operate at 9 bar. This architecture has made Slayer the reference for manual flow profiling in the professional segment. Second: Craftsmanship in Seattle. Every Slayer is built in its own factory in Seattle – even after the majority takeover by La Cimbali in 2017. Third: Customization. Wood type (Walnut, Ash, others), powder coating colors for side panels, metal finishes – every Slayer is configured for its owner.
All Slayer machines use 58 mm portafilters in industrial standard – compatible with all common precision baskets and tampers.

What Flow Profiling Actually Means
In classic 9-bar espresso machines, the pump runs at full pressure from the start. With Slayer, water is throttled via the Needle Valve in the pre-brew phase: the pump runs at 9 bar, but the valve only lets a fraction through – the coffee puck saturates gently, reducing channeling and bitter notes. When you flip the paddle to full load, the valve opens, and the shot finishes with classic extraction. This is pure flow profiling: you control the flow, not the pressure.
Pressure Profiling (like with La Marzocco GS3 MP or Rocket R Nine One) follows a programmed or manually controlled pressure curve. Slayer flow profiling, on the other hand, regulates the water quantity per unit of time – at constant pump pressure. Both approaches influence the flavor profile, but in different ways. Slayer brings this concept to a machine that is dedicated to it down to the smallest detail.
Who is Slayer for
Slayer is a conscious decision, not a necessity. A Slayer Single Group or Steam Single suits home baristas who have been working with espresso for years, who already know or want to learn the flavor concept of flow profiling as a central tool, and who are willing to buy a machine as a tool for decades. Slayer is also suitable for specialty cafes with moderate volume, roastery QC labs, boutique hotels, and anyone who wants a machine on their counter that stands out visually and functionally.
For those who want a saturated brew group without the complexity of flow profiling: La Marzocco. For those seeking NEO technology with short heat-up times: Victoria Arduino Eagle One Prima. For those who prefer E61 tradition with Italian mechanics: Rocket Espresso, ECM, Profitec. For those seeking flow profiling in a more compact home format with a paddle: Lelit Bianca V3. For those who prefer manual lever extraction: Flair Espresso or Olympia Express Cremina. Slayer is not "better" – it is different. Those who want it know why.
What goes well with it
A Slayer demands a grinder of a corresponding level – flow profiling requires even particle distribution for the effect to land in the cup. At Slayer's level: Weber Workshops EG-1 or Option-O Lagom P80 as flagship grinders. For 64 mm flat-burr precision: Mahlkönig E64 WS or X64 SD for single dose. For classic Italian Mignon class: Eureka Atom or Libra.
For the scale: Acaia Lunar with flow rate display (thematically fitting for the Slayer world). For puck prep at Slayer level: Weber Workshops. For airtight bean storage: Airscape (exclusive Swiss importer). For precise brewing water: Apax Labs mineral profiles (exclusive Swiss importer). Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Slayer Single Group V4 and Steam Single?
The Single Group V4 is the premium architecture with a glass touchscreen interface, full electronic control (PID, auto on/off, pre-brew timer, power-saving schedule), saturated brew group, and 3-stage paddle. The Steam Single brings manual 3-position control with "record and playback" via the Heads-Up Barista Dashboard, dual boiler (0.8 L brew / 2.4 L steam), reduced matte black powder-coated housing – made on order in Seattle.
What is Slayer Flow Profiling and how does it differ from Pressure Profiling?
Flow Profiling (Slayer) controls the water flow through the puck via a patented Needle Valve at the grouphead. The pump runs at 9 bar, and the valve throttles the flow. In the pre-brew phase, the puck is saturated with reduced flow, then the paddle releases the full flow. Pressure Profiling (La Marzocco GS3 MP, Rocket R Nine One) follows a pressure curve by variably controlling the pump itself or regulating a bleed valve. Both concepts influence the taste, but in different ways.
Is Slayer a home or a commercial machine?
Both. The Single Group V4 and the Steam Single are technically light commercial machines with commercial components (Rotary Vane Pump, group rated for 1 million cycles) that are also suitable for ambitious home kitchens in terms of footprint and power setup. They are just as usable for classic 1-group cafes or specialty bars with moderate volume as they are for home baristas who want the maximum.
What power supply does a Slayer need in Switzerland?
The Slayer Single Group V4 is delivered from the factory with 208–240 V and an L6-30 plug. The specific adaptation to the Swiss power supply – whether 230 V household current (T15/CEE 16A) or fixed installation – will be discussed individually before ordering, so you can prepare the appropriate connection.
How is a Slayer configured and customized?
Wood types for the actuators (standard: European Ash, optional Walnut and others), powder coating color for side and rear panels, metal finishes for the X-accents – each Slayer is configured after ordering. RAL color charts for custom powder coating are available. Delivery times vary depending on the configuration. We will personally assist you with the configuration; you make the decisions.
Does Slayer still belong to the Slayer family from Seattle?
Slayer was acquired by the Italian La Cimbali Group in December 2017. The operational manufacturing remains in Seattle, the engineering team in Seattle, and the machines continue to be handcrafted there. La Cimbali brings international distribution structures and backing in the specialty segment. For the product itself, nothing has changed in its DNA – patented Needle Valve, customization, Seattle manufacturing.
Can I see a Slayer before buying?
Slayer machines are not permanently set up in both showrooms – the volume makes that impractical. For a personal demonstration, please contact us in advance, and we will arrange a demo in Zurich or Bern. Bringing your own beans is welcome – the Slayer only unfolds its full potential when you can play the 3-stage paddle with your favorite profile.
How is a Slayer delivered to Switzerland?
Slayer machines are manufactured in Seattle and shipped to Switzerland after ordering. Delivery time typically several weeks depending on the configuration. We coordinate transport, customs clearance, and delivery to your address or Click and Collect at the showroom. On-site setup with assembly, installation, and introduction on site can be booked at an additional cost upon request – a quick inquiry is sufficient. Financing via Heylight is possible.
Where is Slayer built?
Slayer Espresso was founded in Seattle, Washington in 2007. All machines continue to be handcrafted in Seattle – even after the majority takeover by La Cimbali (2017). Manufacturing and engineering teams are located at the same site.
Roastery Tip
Slayer machines are rarely a first purchase in our world – these are machines for those who have been working with espresso for years and are looking for a new tool for flow profiling. Classic profiles like Cozy Chocolate and Nutty Delight benefit from extended pre-infusion on a Slayer: 8–10 seconds in pre-brew, then full load – the chocolate and nutty notes gain body, and bitterness is reduced. Very Nutty requires less pre-brew, but a clean full-load push. Slayer becomes truly exciting with lighter roasts: Wild Peach with long pre-infusion (up to 12 seconds with the Needle Valve throttled) reveals fruit notes that are often lost on static 9-bar machines. One of many possibilities.
