Manual Coffee Grinders
Buy Manual Coffee Grinders Switzerland – from Hario Entry to Weber HG-2
A manual coffee grinder is the direct link between bean and cup. You crank, the burrs turn, the grounds fall out. No electricity, no motor, less heat transfer to the grounds, often more precise in grind consistency than electric grinders in the same price range. For travel, small kitchens, offices, office setups, weekend cabin getaways – or simply as a conscious decision for a hands-on workflow.
Coffee Coaching Club carries manual grinders from twelve brands across five countries of origin. Germany dominates with Kinu (espresso-focused), Comandante (filter-focused), and NECCST (design-driven). The USA brings the premium league with Weber Workshops, Japan with Hario offers classic pour-over tradition, China/Taiwan with Timemore, 1Zpresso, Varia, and Normcore represents modern engineering, and Italy with Eureka offers a manual variant alongside their electric Mignon line.

Manual Espresso vs. Manual Filter
Manual grinders are rarely designed for just one application. However, the burr geometry and adjustment are often optimized for a specific type:
Manual Espresso Grinders have very fine adjustment in the lower grind size range. You need grind size changes of just a few micrometers per click because espresso reacts extremely sensitively. Classic manual espresso burrs: Kinu M47 family (conical stainless steel burrs), Weber HG-2 (83mm conical burrs), 1Zpresso K-Ultra, Timemore Millab M01.
Manual Filter Grinders have a coarser adjustment range and are optimized for a consistent, medium-coarse grind. Classic filter burrs: Comandante C40/C60 (Nitro-Blade burrs), Hario Ceramic burrs, Timemore Chestnut C5, Kanso Hiku.
Modern engineered grinders (Varia EVO Hybrid, Normcore V2/V3) often offer Dual-Use – they work for both applications without being perfect in either league. This is a good solution for setups that require both.

What goes with it
For espresso machines suitable for manual grinders: Italian espresso machines or lever espresso machines (Manument, La Marzocco Leva X, Olympia Cremina, Flair). Flair lever brewers pair particularly well with manual grinders – two mechanical tools in one setup. For filter and pour-over: V60 and pour-over drippers, Chemex, AeroPress, French Press. For kettles: gooseneck kettles. For tools: Normcore WDT, tamper collection. For precision scales: Acaia Pearl. For cleaning: grinder cleaning. For bean containers: Airscape. For beans from our own roastery: CCC in-house roasts – manual filter grinders love light specialty roasts like Wild Peach and Bright Cassis, manual espresso grinders work with all profiles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Kinu M47 or Comandante C40?
Two German manual classics with different focuses. Kinu M47 (CHF 224–489): conical stainless steel burrs, finely graded adjustment, espresso-focused, considered the gold standard for manual espresso in the home barista community. Comandante C40 MK4 (CHF 258): Nitro-Blade burrs, classic filter design, specialty coffee standard for filter. For espresso: Kinu. For filter: Comandante. For both (okay): 1Zpresso K-Ultra or Varia EVO Hybrid.
1Zpresso K-Ultra or Timemore Chestnut C5?
Both modern manual grinders from China/Taiwan in the mid-price segment. 1Zpresso K-Ultra (CHF 319): known for precise scale and fine espresso adjustment, iron gray or silver. Timemore Chestnut C5 (CHF 129): more accessible entry, wider application from filter to espresso. For maximum espresso precision: K-Ultra. For a universal tool: C5.
What distinguishes Weber HG-2 from Kinu M47 Titan?
Both are premium manual espresso grinders in the upper segment. Weber HG-2 (CHF 1,219–1,519): 83mm conical burrs (very large for a manual grinder), MK II as a revised variant. Kinu M47 Titan (CHF 489): titanium housing, smaller burrs, more compact format. Weber HG-2 is the endgame, Kinu Titan is a top-premium from the Kinu family. Directly noticeable in the showroom.
How much time does a manual grinder take per shot?
For 18g of espresso, typically 20–60 seconds of cranking, depending on burr size and physical strength. Filter grinding is faster (coarser grind). Kinu M47 with 47mm burrs: approx. 30–40 seconds for espresso. Weber HG-2 with 83mm burrs: significantly faster, approx. 15–25 seconds. Comandante C40 for filter: 30–60 seconds depending on grind size.
Which manual grinder for travel?
Compact models: Hario Mini-Slim PLUS (CHF 38), Kinu M47 Traveler (CHF 234), Comandante X25 Trailmaster Dune (CHF 234). All three fit into a backpack or suitcase. Hario is the cheapest backup solution, Kinu Traveler and Comandante X25 are travel-friendly premium options.
What are Normcore Ghost Burrs?
Ghost Burrs are a special burr geometry from Normcore. 48.6mm conical burrs with optimized grind profile for filter and pour-over. Compared to standard burrs from other brands: clearer cup profile, less fines. Installed in the Normcore Manual Grinder V2 (CHF 129).
Is a premium manual grinder like the Weber HG-2 really worth it?
If you pull manual espresso daily and experiment with light specialty roasts: yes. The 83mm burrs and Weber engineering deliver a grind quality that electric grinders only achieve from CHF 3,000+. For occasional manual shots or travel, a Kinu M47 (or NECCST Series 1) offers a better price-to-practicality ratio.
Can I test manual grinders before buying?
Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. We have Kinu, Comandante, Weber Workshops, NECCST, 1Zpresso, Timemore, and more on site. You can feel the grind adjustment, hear the grinding sound, try out the weight and balance. Please arrange an appointment beforehand.
