Comandante C40 MK4 Nitro Blade – Manual Grinder with Conical Burrs
The crank turns smoothly, a soft crunch, and the grounds fall evenly into the glass – reproducible click by click. A hand grinder that feels like it will last a lifetime.
The C40 MK4 Nitro Blade is one of the most renowned hand grinders in the specialty coffee world: robust, precise, and versatile, from espresso to French Press. Coffee Coaching Club is a Comandante partner; the C40 is manufactured in Germany. Available in eleven finishes.
The Nitro Blade Grinding Mechanism
Inside, a conical burr grinder with an outer diameter of 39 millimeters and an inner diameter of 30 millimeters, made of high-alloy, nitrogen-rich martensitic stainless steel. This steel is exceptionally wear-resistant and keeps its cutting edges sharp for a long time – ensuring consistent grind size for years. The steel is taste-neutral, so the aromas of the bean remain unchanged. The grinding range extends from fine for espresso to coarse for French Press.
40 Clicks, Precisely Repeatable
The grind size is adjusted via a stepped click mechanism under the burrs – 40 clicks that engage firmly and do not change during grinding. Each click represents approximately 25 to 30 micrometers. Since the scale is the same across the entire C40 range, you can share recipes as click numbers with others. For those who prefer an even finer adjustment, the Red Clix upgrade allows for approximately 15 micrometers per click.
Material and Construction
The body, depending on the version, is either matte coated stainless steel or covered with wood veneer. The axle, crank, and two micro ball bearings are made of stainless steel, and the oak wood knob from the Black Forest fits comfortably in the hand. Included are two containers, each with a capacity of approximately 40 grams: an amber glass and a polymer glass, both taste-neutral.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many clicks does the C40 MK4 have and what does the Red Clix do?
The C40 MK4 has 40 clicks, with approximately 25 to 30 micrometers per click. The Red Clix Upgrade refines the scale to about 15 micrometers per click – useful if you want to make very fine adjustments, for example for espresso.
Is it suitable for espresso?
Yes. The grinding range extends from fine for espresso to coarse for French Press. For particularly fine espresso settings, the Red Clix is a useful addition.
What distinguishes the MK4 from earlier versions?
The MK4 has a revised burr suspension that prevents beans from getting stuck at the top, along with detailed improvements in workflow. Many parts remain compatible with earlier C40 models.
Can I see it before buying?
Certainly. You can experience the grinder live in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. You are welcome to bring your own beans.
Roastery Tip
Hand-ground, a chocolatey-nutty profile unfolds a beautiful depth – take Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight, 1:2 as a starting point for espresso. If you like maximum body without acidity, try Very Nutty; for a fruity Pour-Over Wild Peach. This is our recommendation, one of many.
