    Two numbers keep circulating about Robusta, and both are wrong: three times the caffeine of Arabica, and a thirty percent share of the world market. The actual caffeine difference is much smaller – and the market share is much larger.

    Upfront: we like both species. What belongs in the cup is your decision, not botany's.

    What is Canephora?

    Coffea canephora is second only to Arabica as the most important coffee species. The trade name Robusta actually refers to a variety group within the species, but is mostly used as a synonym. The species originates from the evergreen lowland forests of Central and West Africa, from Guinea to Uganda, where it grows at elevations between 50 and 1500 meters.

    Botanically, Canephora is the simpler case: diploid with 22 chromosomes, meaning a normal double set of chromosomes – unlike the quadruple set found in Arabica. This very species was one of the two parent species from which Arabica arose.

    How much caffeine does Robusta really contain?

    More than Arabica, but not three times as much. The figures from the scientific literature: green Canephora beans contain 1.4 to 3.3 grams of caffeine per 100 grams of dry matter, typically 1.7 to 2.1. Arabica ranges from 0.7 to 1.7, typically 1.0 to 1.2.

    The difference between the sources is real and comes down to different samples and measurement methods. That's why we give a range of 1.4 to 2 rather than a single figure. What matters more for the cup is the dose anyway: how much caffeine reaches you depends on the amount you weigh out, not the species.

    What chemically distinguishes Robusta from Arabica?

    Two rows explain the reputation. The higher chlorogenic acids bring more harshness and astringency; the lower lipids and lower sugar content mean less sweetness and less body develop during roasting. That Robusta is lower in sucrose content than Arabica is also confirmed by a more recent 2025 study.

    For sucrose, we did not find reliable species-specific percentage figures – the often-cited numbers could not be confirmed in any primary source. The direction is confirmed, not the magnitude.

    How large is the Robusta share today?

    Almost half. According to production data from the US Department of Agriculture from July 2026, the Robusta share in the 2025/26 harvest year stood at around 47 percent.

    Export data from the International Coffee Organization show the same picture: in the first eight months of the 2025/26 coffee year, the Arabica share of green coffee exports fell to 60.2 percent, down from 64.0 percent in the same period the previous year; Robusta exports grew by nearly ten percent over the same period.

    The reasons are obvious: Robusta yields more, tolerates heat better, and is cheaper to produce – qualities that carry more weight in a warming climate. On top of that comes the two-year yield cycle in Brazil, which causes the Arabica figures to fluctuate from year to year.

    Why is Robusta more resilient?

    Because the species carries resistance genes against coffee leaf rust and tolerates drought and heat better. Canephora has been the most important source of rust resistance in Arabica breeding for over 70 years – the well-known Timor Hybrids carry exactly these genes, originating from Canephora.

    Canephora yields more per hectare than Arabica. Brazil's Conilon clones show what is possible under intensive conditions – these are peak values from irrigated plantations, not average yields.

    On top of that comes the higher yield. The direct comparison in the scientific literature cites 1500 to 3000 kilograms of green coffee per hectare for Arabica and 2300 to 4000 for Canephora. In irrigated high-density plantations with Conilon clones in Brazil, 4800 to 7200 kilograms have been documented – peak values, not averages.

    Why is Robusta propagated by cuttings?

    Because the species cannot self-pollinate. Canephora has gametophytic self-incompatibility: pollen from one plant does not fertilize its own flowers. Every plant needs foreign pollen, and every seed is a new genetic mix.

    This has two practical consequences. First, a Robusta field must contain different genotypes, otherwise there is no fruit set. Second, a good tree can only be multiplied through cuttings or grafting, not through seeds. That is the exact opposite of Arabica, where varieties like Typica remained stable for centuries through seed propagation.

    The side effect is remarkable: because Canephora constantly cross-pollinates, the species is genetically far more diverse than Arabica – and that is exactly what makes it a reservoir for breeding.

    What is Fine Robusta?

    A quality standard of its own. In 2014, the Coffee Quality Institute and the Uganda Coffee Development Authority jointly published the first comprehensive guide with standards and procedures for high-quality Robusta. It is scored in the CQI's Q system, where the threshold is 80 points.

    The point of it is not the number, but the existence of the system: since then, Robusta has been assessed by its own criteria instead of being measured against an Arabica standard it can never meet by definition.

    The original document of the Fine Robusta standards was not accessible through official CQI channels. The publisher, the year, and the 80-point threshold of the Q system are confirmed; we cannot confirm details on defect classes and screen sizes firsthand.

    Why is Robusta used in Italian espresso blends?

    Because of body and crema. Robusta brings more soluble solids and a denser, longer-lasting crema to the cup – qualities that are visible and noticeable in Espresso itself. On top of that comes the price: Robusta is significantly cheaper, which matters at a bar with high throughput.

    One important point here, which we already made in the espresso article: a thick crema is not a sign of quality. Robusta produces it reliably, regardless of how good the coffee is. So anyone who takes a lush crema as proof of quality is ultimately just measuring the Robusta share.

    In classic southern Italian blends, the Robusta share is often between 20 and 40 percent, in Naples sometimes even higher. That is not a cost-cutting measure but a flavor decision: these blends are designed for milk drinks and for a bold, chocolatey base note that holds up against sugar and milk.

    Does Robusta taste bad?

    The poor reputation has a real core and an unfair half. The real core: a large share of the Robusta traded worldwide is grown as a mass commodity, harvested mechanically, processed without selection, and used for instant coffee or cheap blends. What comes out of that does taste flat and woody.

    The unfair half: the exact same treatment would produce flat, woody coffee from Arabica too. Carefully grown and processed Robusta from good farms tastes of cocoa, nuts, and dark spices – different from Arabica, but not worse.

    Our stance on this is the same as always: there is no coffee police. If a blend with Robusta tastes better to you than a pure Arabica, then that is the right blend for you.

    Where can you get good Robusta?

    From us – and not just as an admixture. Robusta is largely absent from the range of most specialty roasteries, because it is seen as the opposite of quality. We see it differently and roast it on its own too.

    Our Robusta roasts

    • Very Nutty – 100% Robusta from South India. Karnataka and Kerala, 850 to 950 meters, washed processing. Hazelnut and walnut notes, very low acidity, dense and long-lasting crema. Our boldest house coffee, made for espresso and milk drinks.
    • Nutty Delight – a blend of Brazil and India. The nutty house blend, creamy and bold, with a share of Robusta.
    • Chestnut Delight – Vietnamese Robusta with Brazilian naturals. Roasted chestnuts, cocoa, dark chocolate.
    • Cozy Nut – Italian-style espresso blend. Half an Espresso-ready chocolate-and-nut base, half Cozy Chocolate, half Very Nutty.

    If you want to taste the difference yourself, the most honest test is a direct comparison: once Very Nutty on its own as an espresso, once a light Arabica like Bright Cassis from Ethiopia. Two coffees that could hardly be more different – and neither one is the better one. All our roasts are available among our coffee beans.

    Frequently asked questions about Canephora and Robusta

    What is Canephora coffee?

    Coffea canephora, commonly called Robusta in the trade, is the second most important coffee species after Arabica. It originates from the lowland forests of Central and West Africa, is diploid with 22 chromosomes, and is fertilized exclusively through cross-pollination.

    If you've only known Robusta from supermarket blends so far, the most interesting experiment is a direct comparison: the same preparation, once pure Arabica, once a blend with a share of Robusta. The difference in body and crema is more telling than any description.
