Why cleaning is your most important service step

An espresso machine is a high-pressure brewing system with coffee oil residues that accumulate over weeks in the brew group, portafilter basket, gaskets, and water paths. If you buy an expensive machine and never clean it, after three months it will no longer deliver what the machine is technically capable of. Bitterness, old flavors, pump problems, and in extreme cases, limescale are the typical consequences.

Puly Caff has been the Italian standard for espresso cleaning for decades – found in practically every classic Italian café backbar, distributed worldwide, and food-safe certified. In the home sector, the feedback is the same: regular cleaning extends the service interval and keeps the cup clean.

The Product Family

Puly Caff Verde (brew group cleaner, powder) – the classic. Used for backflushing with a blind portafilter. Removes coffee oils from the brew group, 3-way valve, and portafilter. Standard interval: weekly for machines used daily.

Puly Bar Verde Igienic Spray (cleaning spray) – liquid variant for surface cleaning and brew group care. Practical for quick application.

Puly Grind Verde (grinder cleaner) – granular cleaner for espresso grinders. You add a portion to the grinder, grind it through, then a small amount of beans to "flush" it out. Removes coffee oils and ground residue from the burrs.

Puly Milk Verde Liquid (milk system cleaner) – liquid cleaner for steam wands and automatic milk systems. Important for super-automatic machines or for intensive cappuccino use.

Puly Caff Descaling Sachets – for the water tank, preventive descaling for soft to medium-hard water.

Recommended cleaning routine

Daily: Wipe the portafilter basket, brew group, and steam wand after each cappuccino, empty the drip tray, wipe the spout.

Weekly: Backflushing with Puly Caff Verde in the blind portafilter (3–5 short brewing cycles). Clean the grinder with Puly Grind Verde if used daily.

Monthly: Remove the brew screen and soak it in Puly Caff solution, clean the brew screen with a brush.

As needed: Descale the water system every 3–12 months depending on water hardness. More often with very hard water or if no water filter is used.

Frequently Asked Questions about Puly Caff

How often should I backflush?

If you use your espresso machine daily: once a week with Puly Caff Verde. For less frequent use (2–3 times a week): every 2–3 weeks. Important only for machines with a 3-way valve (all professional home machines with E61, dual boiler, HX).

Is Puly Caff food-safe?

Yes, Puly Caff products are certified for use on machines that handle food. Important: rinse thoroughly with clear water after each cleaning.

Puly Caff powder or Puly Bar spray?

Powder (Puly Caff Verde) for backflushing in the blind portafilter – intensive cleaning where the agent works in the system. Spray (Puly Bar Verde) for surfaces, spout, brew group body, quick daily cleaning. Combining both makes sense.

How do I clean a grinder with Puly Grind?

Empty the hopper, add a portion of Puly Grind Verde (typically 3–5 g) to the hopper, grind it through. Then grind 30–50 g of beans to remove residue from the grinder. Recommendation: every 1–2 weeks with intensive use.

Does Puly Caff replace descaler?

No. Puly Caff Verde cleans coffee oils and residues – descaler removes limescale deposits. Both are separate applications. With very soft water (or consistently filtered water), descaling is rarely necessary.

Which machines can I use Puly Caff with?

With all classic espresso machines with a 3-way valve (E61, dual boiler, HX, Bezzera/Lelit/Profitec/ECM/Rocket/Quick Mill/La Marzocco). For thermoblock machines without a 3-way valve, only for portafilter cleaning, not for backflushing.
