Knock Box & Grounds Container

A knock box is the container into which you knock the espresso coffee grounds from the portafilter after brewing. It sounds trivial, but it's an important part of a consistent workflow. Without a knock box, coffee grounds end up in organic waste, stick to the budget-friendly tapping stick, or clog the sink. With a knock box: clean ejection, collected, easy to empty – and, depending on the design, aesthetically integrated into your café or home setup.
Coffee Coaching Club carries around 25 active knock box models in two main designs: Standalone Knock Box (freestanding version with a rubber knock bar in the middle) and Knock Drawer (flat design with a swing door, integrated or next to the machine). For home setups without counter depth, the standalone box is usually suitable; for café bars or home setups with counter construction, the drawer is preferable.
Classic design: a cylindrical or rectangular container with a rubber knock bar in the middle. You tap the portafilter against the bar, the grounds fall into the container, and you empty it every few days.
Accessories: Rhino Thumpa Replacement Bar / Rubber Protector (CHF 6) as a wear part.
Flat, drawer-like design – integrated under or next to the espresso machine. You open the drawer or tap through a swing door, and the grounds fall into the container. Standard for café setups, practical for home setups with counter construction.
The GroundsBreaker series has a reinforced design for café workflow with high knocking frequency.

Depends on the setup. Knock Box (Standalone): flexible placement, simple workflow, good for home setups without fixed counter construction. Knock Drawer: integrated into the counter / under the machine, cleaner aesthetic, standard for home setups with construction work and for all café setups.
For 1–2 shots per day, the smallest version is sufficient (Rhino Knock Box Black, 14x24 drawer). For 4–6 shots per day, a medium version (Rhino Medium, 20x30 drawer). The rule of thumb: the box should hold 5–10 days of grounds so you don't have to empty it too often.
CKDC is design-oriented, with high material quality (Mirror, Walnut) and available in many sizes. Rhino is more accessible in price, with focused functionality. For design aesthetics and counter presentation: CKDC. For practical workflow without aesthetic demands: Rhino.
Commercial drawer series from CKDC. Three sizes: GroundsBreaker1 (21.5x36, CHF 130), GroundsBreaker2 (26.5x37, CHF 137), GroundsBreaker3 (28x37, CHF 151). Reinforced design for café workflow with 100+ shots per day, higher knocking frequency, high durability.
For a home setup with 2–4 shots per day, about 5–10 days between emptying, depending on the box size. Important: coffee grounds can get wet and mold – so don't leave them in the box for too long. Grounds can be easily composted or disposed of as organic waste.
The Rhino Thumpa Floor Standing (CHF 94) is floor-standing with a longer bar – you tap while standing without bending down. Ergonomically sensible for café setups with continuous knocking frequency. A replacement bar (CHF 6) is available as a wear part.
Yes, in the showrooms in Bern and Zurich Oerlikon. Rhino, CKDC, Normcore, Motta, and Rocket knock boxes are available to touch and feel. Height, bar stability, sound – all directly perceptible. Please arrange an appointment beforehand.
