Typica: The Line Almost Everything Comes From
Almost all of Latin America's coffee traces back to two lineages, and Typica is one of them. Its journey is documented with dates – the most famous story about it, however, is not.
Up front: Typica rarely appears on the bag today. It's still in almost everything you drink, though – as an ancestor.
What Is Typica?
One of the two founding lineages of cultivated arabica. Tall-growing, low-yielding, highly susceptible to coffee leaf rust, with large beans and very good cup quality. Up until the 1940s, most plantations in Central and South America were planted with Typica.
It goes by many names: Criollo, Indio, Arábigo, Plume Hidalgo, Blue Mountain, and Sumatra all refer to the same lineage. Hawaiian Kona is Typica too – introduced from Guatemala in 1892.
This abundance of names is no accident. Because Typica was, for centuries, the only lineage available across entire growing regions, nobody needed a variety name – people simply called it "the local one" or named it after the region. Only once other varieties arrived did a distinguishing name become necessary.
How Did Typica Reach the Americas?

The waypoints are documented, the anecdotes around them are not – more on that below.
The chain is unusually well dated. Arabica reached Yemen from Ethiopia in the 15th or 16th century. By around 1700, coffee was already growing in India, in the region around Mysore then known as Malabar. In 1696 and 1699, Dutch traders shipped seed from the Malabar coast to Batavia, present-day Jakarta.
In 1706, a single plant went from Java to the botanical garden in Amsterdam. In 1714, after the Peace of Utrecht, the mayor of Amsterdam gave a coffee plant to King Louis XIV. In 1723, plants went from Paris to Martinique. From there, onward: Jamaica in 1730, Santo Domingo in 1735, Cuba in 1748, Costa Rica in 1779, El Salvador in 1840.
A correction to the common narrative, courtesy of World Coffee Research: the Typica lineage probably only branched off once the seed moved from India to Indonesia – not directly from Yemen, as is often told. Genetic studies show that the shipment from Yemen to India contained both Typica-type and Bourbon-type plants.
How Much Truth Is in the Gabriel de Clieu Story?
It's the most famous coffee anecdote there is: French naval officer Gabriel de Clieu brings a coffee plant to Martinique in 1723 and shares his scant water ration with it during the crossing.
As a story, it's terrific. As evidence, it's thin. The source is a letter that de Clieu himself published in a literary journal roughly fifty years later, in 1774. Coffee historian William Ukers already noted in 1922 that there was considerable disagreement over the year of arrival – some cite 1720, others 1723.
And here's the most striking part: neither World Coffee Research's variety catalog nor the major 2024 genome study mentions de Clieu at all. Both describe the 1723 Paris-to-Martinique transfer without naming anyone.
We still like telling the story – but for what it is: a self-account, told secondhand, half a century after the events. The same goes for the "seven seeds" supposedly smuggled out of Yemen around 1600, and for Baba Budan, who is said to have brought the first seeds to India in 1670. Both are lore, not documentation.
What's the Difference from Bourbon?
They're sisters, not ancestor and descendant. Both lineages trace back to the same original Yemeni material. Typica split off via the Dutch route to Java; Bourbon arose from French plantings on the island of Bourbon, present-day Réunion, where missionaries introduced seed from Yemen in the early 18th century.
The 2024 genome study demonstrates the close relationship strikingly: the Typica and Bourbon individuals studied were related to each other to a degree consistent with a direct parent-child relationship.

The three most common mistakes in one sentence: Caturra, Pacas, and Villa Sarchi are Bourbon, not Typica. If you find them on a Typica list, you're reading a source that didn't check.
Why Is Typica Barely Grown Anymore?

Low yield and high susceptibility together are a bad combination. Since the 1940s, Typica has been replaced across much of the Americas by higher-yielding, more robust varieties. It has survived mainly where the name itself is worth money – in Peru, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica, where it's sold as Jamaica Blue Mountain.
How Narrow Is the Genetic Bottleneck, Really?
The story goes like this: everything descends from a single plant from Amsterdam, which is why arabica is genetically poor and disease-prone. The conclusion is right; the reasoning is only half right.
World Coffee Research cites a striking figure for Brazil, which produces around 40 percent of the world's supply: 97.55 percent of the varieties grown there descend from Typica and Bourbon. So the genetic base really is extremely narrow.
But the 2024 genome study adds a finding that flips the narrative: arabica's genetic diversity was already very low in wild populations. In cultivated varieties, it's only marginally lower still. So the colonial founder effect didn't create the narrowness – it carried forward a narrowness that already existed.
Two side details that cut against the common account: Bourbon has lower diversity than Typica, not the other way around – there, the bottleneck really does trace back to a single surviving plant from 1720. And the authors attribute the fact that arabica survived such bottlenecks at all to self-pollination and its doubled chromosome sets, which filtered out or buffered harmful gene variants.
The figure of 97.55 percent appears exactly like this on World Coffee Research's site, but without a cited source. We're reproducing it here with that caveat.

So here's how we handle it: we list the variety where we can back it up, and not otherwise. For our two Ethiopian coffees, Bright Cassis and Wild Peach, from Tero Farm in Guji, the listing reads Heirloom – which, honestly, is itself a catch-all term for Ethiopia's many landraces that were never individually catalogued. Given the current state of knowledge, you can't get more precise than that there, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

What you can compare instead is what you actually taste. Two coffees side by side, brewed the same way, tell you more about your own taste than any variety name. You'll find our selection among our coffee beans.
Now What?
Drinking pure Typica is possible, but rare. If you get the chance – Jamaica Blue Mountain, Kona, or a Peruvian Typica – it's worth comparing it against a modern variety from the same region. The difference is usually smaller than the price difference, and that's a useful thing to know.
