Comparison La Marzocco Micra vs La Marzocco Mini R
La Marzocco Linea Micra vs. Linea Mini R – two icons, two decisions
The paddle clicks. A soft hum from the rotary pump. The first drop falls – honey-colored, dense, slow. You're in your kitchen, early morning, light streaming in from the side. What sits on your countertop is a La Marzocco – handcrafted in Florence, saturated group head, the standard by which much is measured. The only question is: Which of the two home icons suits your everyday life? The compact Linea Micra or the larger Linea Mini R from the La Marzocco Collection?
This comparison focuses specifically on these two machines. If you're also considering the GS3 with its commercial build, you'll find the three-way comparison on our Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 overview page.
What they both share
Both machines are dual boilers with a saturated group head designed by La Marzocco – the brew head is permanently flooded with hot water, so there's no temperature loss on the way to the coffee grounds. Water makes up a large part of the espresso, and at this point – thermal stability – a large part of the aroma profile is decided. Both work with a rotary pump, 58mm convertible portafilter, and can be paired with the La Marzocco Home App. Both can be connected to a direct water line. Both are built to last for decades. Our opinion is one of many: We consider saturated group heads to provide a more refined aroma profile compared to E61 systems – regardless of the heating system.

When the Linea Micra fits
The Micra is the most compact La Marzocco in the home line. 29 cm wide, 19 kg, it fits under many wall cabinets. The rotary pump is not a given in the household segment – it runs quieter and more linearly than a vibration pump, which significantly impacts the acoustic experience. The 3-in-1 Convertible Portafilter – single spout, double spout, bottomless in one portafilter – is a thoughtful touch for households that switch between rituals. Manufacturer and reviews consistently report that the Micra is ready to use relatively quickly; for full thermal stability, as with any dual boiler machine, a longer pre-heating time is worthwhile.
What the Micra doesn't have: an integrated shot timer directly on the brew head, the Mini R's two-valve pre-infusion system, or the larger steam boiler. For one to three shots a day plus occasional milk, this is no loss. If you regularly pull four cappuccinos in a row for guests, you'll notice the smaller steam boiler.
When the Linea Mini R fits
The Mini R is what La Marzocco builds when they want to bring the commercial technology of their café machines as close to home as possible – without compromising on build quality. A 3-liter steam boiler means milk foam without interruption, even if four guests order cappuccino simultaneously. The "R" generation brought several innovations compared to the classic Linea Mini: integrated shot timer on the brew head, convertible multi-portafilter, revised two-valve pre-infusion, flush function, Brew-by-Weight integration with the Acaia Lunar LM. This results in a setup that is close to a professional workflow.
What the Mini R is not: compact. 36 cm wide, around 30 kg, it needs its own space. The heat-up time is longer. If you only pull two espressos on Sundays, the Micra is a better fit. If you regularly have guests, the Mini R is a decision that will last for years.
Our view – one of many
No one needs a Mini R just because it's bigger. And no one needs a Micra just because it's more compact. Both machines make excellent espresso. The difference isn't in the shot – it's in daily life. How many cups a day. How often milk. How much space. Those who want them know why.
If you'd like to see both alongside the commercial GS3 – including pressure profiling and a saturated group head with a 1.3-liter brew boiler – you'll find the three-way comparison here. If you're thinking about the right grinder, you'll find our selection in the Coffee Grinder Collection – affordable and precise, for example, from the Varia Collection, endgame, for example, from the Weber Workshops Collection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I see the Linea Micra and Mini R before buying?
Yes. Both machines are live in our showrooms in Bern and Zurich – you can discover them on-site and feel the difference in direct comparison. Both may not always be in stock at the same time; transport between showrooms takes 1–3 days.
Which is better for a two-person household?
Both. The decisive factor is how often and how you use milk. Two espressos a day plus occasional cappuccino: Micra is perfectly sufficient. Twice a day cappuccino plus guests on weekends: Mini R is noticeably more relaxed.
Does the Micra have a rotary or vibratory pump?
The Micra has a rotary pump – one of the special technical qualities of this machine. This results in quieter and more linear pump behavior than most household machines of this size.
How is the machine delivered and ordered?
The Mini R can be ordered directly online in the webshop, with delivery throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein in 2–4 business days. Click & Collect is possible in both showrooms. Financing is available. The Linea Micra follows La Marzocco's guidelines for a personal ordering process – contact office@coffeecoachingclub.ch directly or schedule an appointment at the showroom.
Do I get an introduction when I buy?
Yes. When purchasing a machine in this price range, the private barista course is included – about 60 minutes on extraction philosophy and daily ritual, in Bern, Zurich, or online.
Roastery Tip
Saturated group heads, as in the Micra and Mini R, deliver the densest aroma profile with classic full-bodied espressos. We would generally recommend Cozy Chocolate or Nutty Delight – chocolate, nutty, rounded body, long finish. If you're looking for maximum density without any acidity, Very Nutty offers the strongest profile. For those who want a fruity discovery: Wild Peach – vibrant, bright, peach note. This is our recommendation, one of many. If you like to experiment with your supermarket beans: feel free.
