The Bezzera Matrix Top MN is a dual boiler espresso machine with a classic E61 brew group, two PID thermostats, and illuminated Plexiglas side panels. Bezzera manufactures it in Italy, in a polished stainless steel casing with rosewood handles.
Inside, two separate copper boilers work: a 0.45-liter coffee boiler for extraction and a steam and water boiler holding approximately 1 liter. Because both are independent, you can extract espresso and froth milk simultaneously and as often as you like, without pressure or temperature drops. Two PID thermostats control the coffee and steam boilers separately; you can maintain a stable brewing temperature in a range of approximately 88 to 96 °C.
The MN stands for manual operation via the traditional E61 group: you start the shot by lifting the lever and end it by lowering it once the desired amount is in the cup. The E61 group is flow-control capable, should you wish to manually control the flow with a corresponding kit later.
We extract by weight ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, so about 18 g of coffee to 36 g of espresso – and adjust grind size, amount, and temperature until it tastes good to us. There is no right or wrong.
Via the 3.5-inch touch display, you set the boiler temperatures, program pre-infusion, store on/off times for each day of the week, and determine which boiler heats first. The water filter alarm and the switch between tank and mains water also run through it. The Plexiglas side panels offer a view into the interior and can be adjusted in color and brightness via RGB-LED. This is a matter of taste and is meant exactly that way – whoever wants the statement in the kitchen knows why.

For everyone who wants to brew and steam in parallel at home, likes the direct lever operation of the E61 group, and loves a piece that also stands out visually. Whether it's your first dual boiler machine or you've been at it for a while – no prior knowledge is required. If you prefer to program quantities at the touch of a button, you'll find that in the DE version with volumetric dosing.
Freshly ground makes all the difference. A capable grinder from the coffee grinders – such as the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1 – suits a machine of this class; the Varia VS3 or the Comandante as a hand grinder are a bit more affordable.
For clean tamping and puck prep, it's worth taking a look at the Normcore Collection or the Weber Workshops range – thanks to 58 mm, everything fits. To ensure your 1:2 ratio is spot on, a scale with an app from the Acaia Collection or a compact one from the Normcore Collection helps.
Our Deep Dive on Heating Systems explains how a dual boiler differs from single and heat exchange boilers; the Coffee Machine Comparison helps with selection.

It has a classic E61 brew group. The MN stands for manual operation via the lever – volumetric dosing is not on board here, you determine the quantity yourself. If you want to program quantities, choose the DE version (with Bezzera BZ group and three PIDs). The portafilter measures 58 mm.
There are two separate copper boilers: a 0.45-liter coffee boiler and a steam and water boiler holding approximately 1 liter, each regulated by its own PID. This allows you to brew and steam simultaneously; the brewing temperature is around 88 to 96 °C.
The Plexiglas side panels offer a view into the interior and can be adjusted in color and brightness via RGB-LED using the touch display.
Both: The 4-liter tank makes it flexible; alternatively, it can be connected to mains water, and the pump pressure is externally adjustable. An automatic brew group flushing program is on board; flush daily with the blind filter without cleaning agent and approximately every 50 shots with cleaning agent. We recommend soft, low-limescale water and regular descaling depending on hardness.
Online throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein with delivery in 2 to 4 working days, or directly in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Financing is possible.
From the roastery: The Matrix maintains a stable temperature and delivers plenty of steam – which benefits dense, sweet profiles, even with plenty of milk. We recommend Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, and Very Nutty. If you like it light and fruity, try Wild Peach or Bright Cassis from our coffee beans. This is our recommendation, one of many.
