Bezzera Nini S PID DE – compact dual-boiler with PID and volumetric control

Cup under the spout, one of the four buttons pressed. The pump starts, water flows through the heat exchanger, and the shot timer counts on the display. When the set amount is reached, the extraction stops automatically – and while it's still running into the cup, steam for milk is already ready. Quiet, precise, at just 25 centimeters wide.

The Bezzera Nini S PID DE is a compact dual-boiler with a heat exchanger, electronic temperature control, and programmable volumetric dosing. Bezzera manufactures it in Italy from polished stainless steel, available from us in black and white.

Heat exchanger – what that means in practice

The Nini works with a heat exchanger: a copper boiler holds hot water for steam, and fresh water from the tank flows through a tube in this boiler to the group at brewing temperature. The boiler water itself never ends up in the espresso. The advantage over a single-boiler: you extract espresso and froth milk simultaneously, without switching. The electrically heated Bezzera brew group makes the machine ready after about ten minutes and maintains the temperature steadily. As with any heat exchanger, a short blank shot is worthwhile before the first extraction of the day to bring the incoming water to ideal temperature – with active PID control, this is very brief.

We extract according to weight ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, i.e., about 18 g of coffee to 36 g of espresso – and adjust grind size, amount, and temperature until it tastes good to us. There is no right or wrong.

PID, Volumetric, Shot Timer, and OPV

PID Temperature Control

Instead of a pure pressure switch, the Nini S PID regulates the temperature electronically. The display shows actual and target values, you set the brewing temperature precisely to the degree and adapt it to your bean – stable even over several extractions.

Volumetric (DE – Dosatura Elettronica)

Four programmable buttons plus a manual button for continuous extraction. You store your desired amount for each button, and the machine stops automatically. This is not gram-accurate like an external scale, but reliably reproducible in everyday use – especially with a fixed grind size.

Integrated Shot Timer

During extraction, a timer on the display counts the time. Practical for dialing in, without having to place a stopwatch next to it – as a guide in addition to the weight ratio.

Externally Adjustable OPV

The overpressure valve regulates the extraction pressure and is externally accessible. This allows you to set the pressure (typically around 9 bar) without disassembling and also experiment with softer 8 or 7 bar. Upon request, a Flow Control Kit for the BZ group is available for the PID versions; a third-party pressure sensor is compatible. The Nini also gets along well with the Clever Dripper (250 ml).

Who the Nini is Made For

For everyone with space limitations who still wants dual-boiler technology: 25 centimeters wide fits in almost any kitchen counter, and the heat exchanger delivers espresso and milk foam simultaneously. For daily espresso or cappuccino, PID and volumetric control make the process smooth and repeatable. And for anyone who wants a piece of Italian engineering on their counter without switching to a commercial format. The electrically heated group heats up faster than a classic E61; a brand-savvy workshop is useful for maintenance. If you prefer the E61 lever group, you can find alternatives in the Tech Check.

What goes with it

An espresso-capable grinder is essential for clean extractions. In the Coffee Grinders section, you'll find affordable and precise options like the Varia VS3 or the Comandante as a hand grinder; the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1 offer more flexibility.

For clean tamping and puck prep, it's worth checking out the Normcore Collection or the Weber Workshops assortment – everything fits thanks to 58 mm. To ensure your 1:2 ratio is correct, a scale from the Normcore Collection or, with an app, from the Acaia Collection will help.

Our Deep Dive on Heating Systems explains the difference between single-boiler, dual-boiler, and heat exchanger machines; the Coffee Machine Comparison helps with selection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Bezzera Nini a single boiler or a dual boiler?

It is a dual-boiler with a heat exchanger. A copper boiler supplies steam, and a tube inside it brings fresh brewing water to temperature – allowing you to extract espresso and milk foam simultaneously. The portafilter measures 58 mm.

Does the Nini S PID DE have an E61 brew group?

No. The PID and DE versions use the electrically heated Bezzera brew group; only the manual PM version is equipped with E61. Both work with 58 mm, so common accessories fit.

Do I need a blank shot before the first espresso?

As a heat exchanger machine, yes: before the first extraction of the day, let water run through the group briefly so that the incoming water reaches ideal temperature. Thanks to the heated group and PID, this step is brief.

What does DE or volumetric mean?

You can set fixed extraction quantities using four programmable buttons; the machine stops automatically. A fifth button triggers a manual, continuous extraction. This ensures that the quantity remains consistent from cup to cup.

Where can I buy the Bezzera Nini?

Online throughout Switzerland and Liechtenstein with delivery in 2 to 4 working days, or directly in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Financing is available.

From the roastery: The heated group operates a bit warmer and caters to dense, sweet profiles, even with milk. Program two of the four buttons – one for about 36 g for a solo espresso, a larger one for milk drinks; once the volumetric control is set with your 1:2 ratio, your daily routine will be smooth. We recommend Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight, and Very Nutty. If you like bright and fruity, try Wild Peach – reduce the temperature a bit and make the blank shot a little longer – or Bright Cassis from our coffee beans. This is our recommendation, one of many.
