The Bezzera Matrix Top MN is a dual boiler portafilter machine with a classic E61 brew group, two PID thermostats and illuminated plexiglass side panels. Bezzera builds it in Italy, in a polished stainless steel housing with rosewood handles.
Inside, two separate copper boilers work independently: a 0.45-litre coffee boiler for extraction and a steam and water boiler holding around 1 litre. Because both are independent, you can pull espresso and steam milk at the same time, as often as you like, without pressure or temperature dropping. Two PID thermostats regulate the coffee and steam boilers separately; you keep the brew temperature stable in a range of roughly 88 to 96 °C.
The MN stands for manual operation via the traditional E61 group: you start the shot by lifting the lever, and end it by lowering it once the desired amount is in the cup. The E61 group is flow control ready, in case you later want to control the flow by hand with a suitable kit.
We extract by weight ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, so around 18 g of coffee to 36 g of espresso – and adjust grind size, dose and temperature until it tastes right to us. There is no right and no wrong.
Using the 3.5-inch touch display, you set the boiler temperatures, program the pre-infusion, store on and off times for every day of the week, and decide which boiler heats up first. The water filter alarm and the switch between tank and plumbed-in water also run through it. The plexiglass side panels open up the view into the machine's interior and let you adjust colour and brightness via RGB LED. That's a matter of taste, and it's meant exactly that way – whoever wants the presence in the kitchen knows why.

For everyone who wants to brew and steam in parallel at home, who likes the direct lever operation of the E61 group, and who loves a piece that also stands out visually. Whether it's your first dual boiler machine or you've been at it for a while – no prior knowledge is needed. If you'd rather program volumes at the push of a button, you'll find that in the DE version with volumetric dosing.
Freshly ground decides everything. A machine of this class deserves a capable grinder from our Coffee Grinders collection – the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1, for example; the Varia VS3 or the Comandante as a hand grinder are a bit more affordable.
For clean tamping and puck prep, it's worth a look at our Normcore Collection or the Weber Workshops range – thanks to 58 mm, everything fits. To keep your 1:2 ratio dialled in, a scale with app from our Acaia Collection or a compact one from the Normcore Collection helps.
How a dual boiler differs from a single boiler and a heat exchanger is explained in our deep dive on heating systems; for help choosing, see our coffee machine comparison.

It has a classic E61 brew group. The MN stands for manual operation via the lever – volumetric dosing is not on board here, you determine the amount yourself. If you'd rather program volumes, go for the DE version (with Bezzera BZ group and three PID). The portafilter measures 58 mm.
There are two separate copper boilers: a 0.45-litre coffee boiler and a steam and water boiler holding around 1 litre, each regulated by its own PID. This lets you brew and steam at the same time; the brew temperature is around 88 to 96 °C.
The plexiglass side panels open up the view into the machine's interior and can be adjusted for colour and brightness via RGB LED using the touch display.
Both: the 4-litre tank keeps it flexible, or it can run on a plumbed-in water connection, with pump pressure adjustable from outside. An automatic brew group flush program is on board; backflush daily with the blind filter without detergent and about every 50 shots with detergent. We recommend soft, low-lime water and regular descaling depending on hardness.
Online, throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein, with delivery in 2 to 4 business days, or directly at our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Financing is available.
From the roastery: the Matrix keeps its temperature steady and delivers plenty of steam – that suits dense, sweet profiles, even with generous amounts of milk. We recommend Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight and Very Nutty. If you like it bright and fruity, try Wild Peach or Bright Cassis from our Coffee Beans. That's our recommendation, one of many.
