Bezzera Mitica Tank – Heat Exchanger with Faema E61

Lift the lever of the E61 group, and it begins: a dense, dark stream flowing into the cup, while steam for the milk is already waiting in the large copper chamber. Classic, calm, no frills – just the mechanics that have worked for decades.

The Bezzera Mitica Tank is a classic heat exchanger machine with the Faema E61 brew group, vibration pump and large 2-liter copper boiler – available exclusively as the tank version. Bezzera manufactures it in Italy from polished stainless steel.

Heat Exchanger with Faema E61

At its heart sits the proven Faema E61 brew group with thermosiphon circulation. Water constantly circulates through the heavy brass group, keeps it at temperature, and delivers stable, well-repeatable shots; the E61 also brings a gentle mechanical pre-infusion. As a heat exchanger machine you draw espresso and steam milk at the same time, and the large 2-liter boiler supplies plenty of steam for it. Brewing temperature results from the boiler pressure, which you set at the pressure switch and read on the gauge – there's no PID, but the large boiler keeps the heat calm and steady.

We extract by weight ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, so around 18 g of coffee to 36 g of espresso – and we adjust grind size, dose and temperature until it tastes right to us. There's no right and no wrong.

Vibration Pump, Tank and Steam

The Mitica Tank works with a vibration pump and is supplied from the removable 4-liter tank, which you can retrofit with a filter attachment. That way you can set it up flexibly, without a plumbed water connection. A dual pressure gauge shows boiler and pump pressure, while you control steam and hot water via two toggle valves; the cold-touch steam wand with a two-hole tip stays cool on the outside and can be locked upright, and the hot water spout is well suited for tea.

Who the Mitica Tank Is For

For everyone who wants the true character of an E61 machine, without a display or electronics – the classic mechanics that matter. The large boiler also makes it confident when steaming milk. Whether it's your first machine with a lever group or you've been at this for a while: the operation stays direct and easy to follow. If you'd rather dial in temperature to the degree with a PID, take a look at the corresponding models in our technical comparison.

What Goes With It

Freshly ground decides everything. In our coffee grinders you'll find affordable and precise options like the Varia VS3 or the Comandante as a hand grinder; more room to explore comes with the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1.

For clean tamping and puck prep, it's worth a look at the Normcore Collection or the Weber Workshops range – thanks to 58 mm, everything fits. To nail your 1:2 ratio, a scale from the Normcore Collection helps, or, with an app, one from the Acaia Collection.

How a heat exchanger machine differs from a single boiler and a dual boiler is explained in our deep dive on heating systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bezzera Mitica Tank have an E61 group, and can it brew and steam at the same time?

Yes. The Mitica uses the Faema E61 brew group with thermosiphon and is a heat exchanger machine – espresso and steamed milk happen at the same time. The portafilter measures 58 mm.

Does it have a PID?

No. Brewing temperature results from the boiler pressure, which you set at the pressure switch and read on the dual gauge. The large 2-liter boiler keeps the heat stable.

Tank or plumbed-in?

The Mitica Tank runs exclusively from the removable 4-liter tank, supplied by a vibration pump. A filter attachment can be retrofitted; this version does not have a plumbed water connection.

How long does it take to heat up, and how do I maintain it?

From cold, it's ready in around fifteen minutes, a bit longer for full stability of the E61 group. Backflush daily with the blind filter without cleaning agent, and about every 50 shots with cleaning agent; descale regularly depending on water hardness – ideally with a filter to prevent limescale in the first place.

Where can I buy the Bezzera Mitica Tank?

Online across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein with delivery in 2 to 4 business days, or directly at our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Financing is available.

From the roastery: the E61 group and the large heat exchanger suit dense, sweet profiles well, milk included. We recommend Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight and Very Nutty. If you like it light and fruity, try Wild Peach or Bright Cassis from our coffee beans. That's our recommendation, one of many.
