Bezzera BZ10 – compact heat exchanger machine with an electrically heated group

Just under ten minutes after switching it on, it's ready: a dense espresso flows into the cup while steam hisses into the milk at the same time. At just 25 centimetres wide, it fits into almost any kitchen – without compromising on what matters.

The Bezzera BZ10 is a compact heat exchanger machine with an electrically heated group – quick to heat up, quiet in operation and solidly built. Bezzera manufactures it in Italy from polished stainless steel.

Heat exchanger, ready fast

The 1.5-litre copper boiler works with a heat exchanger: this lets you pull espresso and steam milk at the same time, with no waiting. Instead of the widely used E61 lever group, the BZ10 relies on an electrically heated Bezzera brew group with two heating elements controlled by a thermostat. This shortens the heat-up time to around ten minutes and keeps the temperature stable. The portafilter measures 58 mm, so common accessories fit. There's no PID installed; the brew temperature sits in the typical range of 94 to 96 °C and can be read off the boiler pressure.

We extract by weight ratio – 1:2 as a starting point, so around 18 g of coffee to 36 g of espresso – and adjust grind size and dose until it tastes right to us. There's no right and no wrong.

Vibration pump, tank and controls

A vibration-damped pump keeps operation quiet; the brew pressure is set to around 9 bar and adjustable via the over-pressure valve. The BZ10 is fed from the 3-litre tank, which shuts off automatically when the level runs low – this version has no direct water connection. A dual gauge shows boiler and brew pressure and, along the way, gives you a hint about the right grind size. A 3-way solenoid valve keeps the puck dry, and you control steam and hot water via tilt switches; the cold-touch steam wand with a two-hole tip stays cool to the touch and locks in the upright position.

Who the BZ10 is made for

For everyone with little space who still wants heat exchanger technology – espresso and steamed milk at the same time, ready fast, uncomplicated in everyday use. The electrically heated group heats up faster than an E61 and is economical to run; for servicing this group, a workshop familiar with the brand is a good idea. If you'd rather have the classic E61 lever group, you'll find the alternatives in our tech comparison.

What goes with it

Freshly ground makes all the difference. In our coffee grinders you'll find affordable, precise options like the Varia VS3 or the Comandante as a hand grinder; the Varia VS6 or the Weber Workshops EG-1 give you more room to play with.

For clean tamping and puck prep, it's worth a look at the Normcore Collection or the Weber Workshops range – thanks to 58 mm, everything fits. To dial in your 1:2 ratio, a scale from the Normcore Collection helps, or, with an app, one from the Acaia Collection.

How a heat exchanger differs from a single boiler and a dual boiler is explained in our deep dive on heating systems.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Bezzera BZ10 have an E61 brew group?

No. The BZ10 uses an electrically heated Bezzera brew group with two heating elements and a thermostat. The portafilter does measure 58 mm though, so common accessories fit. As a heat exchanger machine, it brews and steams at the same time.

Does it have a PID?

No. The brew temperature sits in the typical range of 94 to 96 °C and results from the boiler pressure, which you read off the dual gauge. The brew pressure is set to around 9 bar and adjustable via the over-pressure valve.

Tank or direct water connection?

The BZ10 runs exclusively from the removable 3-litre tank, fed by a quiet vibration pump. It switches off automatically when the water level is low. This machine has no direct water connection.

How long does it take to heat up and how do I maintain it?

Thanks to the electrically heated group, it's ready in around ten minutes. A 3-way solenoid valve keeps the puck dry; backflush daily with the blind basket without detergent, and roughly every 50 shots with detergent. Descale regularly depending on your water hardness.

Where can I buy the Bezzera BZ10?

Online throughout Switzerland and to Liechtenstein with delivery in 2 to 4 business days, or directly in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). Financing is available.

From the roastery: The heat exchanger delivers enough steam for milk, and the steady temperature suits dense, sweet profiles well. We recommend Cozy Chocolate, Nutty Delight and Very Nutty. If you like it light and fruity, try Wild Peach or Bright Cassis from our coffee beans. That's our recommendation, one of many.
