The underside of your bottomless filter basket during extraction. You can see where the first stream exits, whether the espresso drips evenly from the entire puck surface, whether you have channeling (individual, early streams shooting through), or whether the distribution worked cleanly.
Do I absolutely need a bottomless portafilter for this?
Yes. With a classic spouted portafilter, you only see the spouts – with a bottomless one, you see the filter basket directly. Only then does the Shot Mirror work.
How do I clean the mirror?
Wipe the mirror surface with a soft cloth after each shot, occasionally clean with warm water. No abrasive agents – the mirroring must not be damaged.
