E61 Group Gasket 8.5 mm – the thicker version for a snug fit
At some point the portafilter handle starts drifting further right when you lock it in, and the shot begins to drip at the sides. Usually the group gasket has simply aged and flattened out a little. A fresh gasket brings the portafilter back to its clean position – and with it the calm, tight extraction you know.
This gasket is the thicker 8.5 mm version for E61 group heads. The extra height compared to the 8.0 mm version gives you a bit more compression and brings the handle back closer to center if it points too far past the zenith when locking in. Outer ø 73 mm, inner ø 57 mm – the standard geometry of the E61 group.

8.0 mm or 8.5 mm?
Both heights fit the same E61 group – the choice depends on where you want your portafilter handle to sit. If the handle still points noticeably past center with a new 8.0 mm gasket, or if it no longer seals cleanly, the thicker 8.5 mm gasket brings it back into the right position. There's no right or wrong here – what matters is that the group closes cleanly. That's our observation, one of many.
Who it's for
For anyone with an E61 machine who wants to renew their group gasket and fine-tune the portafilter's position at the same time. You'll find more on care and maintenance at Machine & Grinder Cleaning, and matching machines under Espresso Machines.
How is it different from the 8.0 mm gasket?
Only in height: at 8.5 mm, this version is half a millimeter thicker. That gives a bit more compression and brings the portafilter handle closer to center.
