Mahlkönig E64 WS – Home Espresso Grinder with Grind-by-Weight and Grind-by-Sync

As you hook the portafilter into the fork, the grinder recognizes the weight and the display shows 0.0 g. The motor starts automatically, the 64mm special-steel burrs go to work, and the grounds fall into the portafilter. 12.0, 15.0, 17.8, 17.9, 18.0 grams – the grinder stops. Not after six seconds, not on an estimate, but at the weight you programmed. Tomorrow, the day after, in three months: the same 18.0 grams. The beans age, humidity shifts, the hopper empties – the dose stays constant.

The Mahlkönig E64 WS is Mahlkönig's first home espresso grinder with Grind-by-Weight and the new Grind-by-Sync technology. Introduced at HostMilano 2025, it's built on the same 64mm grinding mechanism as the professional Mahlkönig SD64, bringing a feature to the home kitchen that used to be reserved for the trade: dosing accurate to 0.1 gram, reproducible on every shot. Coffee Coaching Club is a partner of Mahlkönig in Switzerland.

Grind-by-Weight

Most electric espresso grinders grind by time. Set five seconds, and the grinder grinds for five seconds. The amount of grounds that results depends on many variables: how dense the bean is, how humid it is, how full the hopper is, how fresh the roast is. In practice, that means an 18-gram target turns into 17.4 grams one time and 18.7 grams the next. If you extract by weight ratio (1:2 as a starting point), that gives you a different extraction dynamic every time – even when the output looks right.

The E64 WS solves this with a built-in scale right under the portafilter fork. The grounds are weighed in real time as they fall from the burrs. The motor stops as soon as the programmed weight is reached – with a resolution of 0.1 gram. Shot-to-shot deviation stays in the tenth-of-a-gram range – more precise than most manual weighings with an external scale.

What that means for taste: understanding your extraction requires a stable variable. Dose is the most fundamental one. Once it's constant, grind-size changes, bean swaps and temperature variations actually become visible in a clean way. Without a constant dose, every change is a guessing game. That's the real value of Grind-by-Weight at home.

Grind-by-Sync – when grinder and machine talk to each other

Grind-by-Sync is an interface that connects the E64 WS to compatible Mahlkönig devices. Specifically: the Mahlkönig Sync Scale or the Mahlkönig Xenia. In a Sync setup, the Sync Scale measures actual extraction time or output weight. If the shot falls outside your recipe parameters, the system reports back to the grinder: finer or coarser, automatically, to bring the next shot closer to the recipe.

Important context: Grind-by-Sync is an ecosystem feature. With non-Mahlkönig machines, the E64 WS works as an excellent Grind-by-Weight grinder, but without automatic grind-size adjustment. Anyone using the Sync Scale gets full automation. For everyone else, GbW remains the core feature. Functions can be extended over time through over-the-air software updates.

Electronic grind-size adjustment in micron steps

The E64 WS has no ring, no dial for grind size. Burr distance is set electronically via a sensor-controlled motor (Disc Distance Detection, DDD) and shown on the display in microns. A single micron corresponds to roughly a one-second difference in extraction time – a precision that has been rare at this price point until now. Zero-point calibration is tool-free and guided on the display: you move the burrs together until they touch, set the zero point, done. After a burr change, the grinder is back at its reference point within minutes.

This includes a ball-joint spout that flexibly adapts to different portafilters, and a metal clump buster (now included as standard). The LED display has adjustable ambient lighting at the spout – the colour can be matched to your setup, if you like.

Who the E64 WS is for

The E64 WS suits home baristas who want an electronically controlled grinder with reproducible dosing and who value convenience over tinkering. If you pull one to four shots a day with the same bean, save your recipes, and don't want to bother with an external scale every time, this delivers exactly that. Adding the Mahlkönig Sync Scale gives you the full Sync ecosystem.

The E64 WS isn't for everyone. If you switch between several beans daily and work consistently single-dose, you'll find in the Varia VS6 (exclusive Swiss importer) or the Weber Workshops EG-1 an alternative optimised for single-dose. If you're after 80mm precision with a Pre-Crushing system: Option-O Lagom 01 or Lagom P80. The E64 WS is a hopper-first grinder – retention in hopper mode is around 4 grams, which needs to be purged when you change beans. Its strength lies in automating dosing, not in variability.

Important to know: the E64 WS is designed as a home grinder. It's built for one to two espressos back to back, not for continuous commercial use. Daily output maxes out at 2.5 kg, and commercial use isn't covered by the warranty.

What goes with it

The E64 WS works with any portafilter machine. The full Sync ecosystem unfolds with the Mahlkönig Sync Scale, but it also delivers excellent results with machines like the La Marzocco Linea Mini R, La Marzocco Micra or a Rocket Espresso – Grind-by-Weight works just as well without Sync integration.

If you want to change the E64 WS's flavour profile later on: SSP 64 mm burrs (High Uniformity, Multipurpose, Lab Sweet) fit the grinding chamber – the tool-free zero-point calibration on the display makes the swap straightforward. Mahlkönig notes that fitting non-original burrs may affect the manufacturer's warranty.

For consistent weight measurement at the output: Acaia Lunar. Affordable alternative: Normcore scale (exclusive Swiss importer). For puck prep with espresso: Normcore WDT and tamper or Weber Workshops Moonraker and Really Nice Tamper. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates (exclusive Swiss importer). For airtight bean storage: Airscape. Background on burrs, particle distribution and extraction in our sensory world.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is Grind-by-Weight on the E64 WS?

The built-in scale has a resolution of 0.1 gram. Shot-to-shot deviation stays in the tenth-of-a-gram range – more precise than most manual weighings with an external scale. If you program 18.0 grams, you get 18.0 grams with minimal variation.

Does Grind-by-Sync work with every espresso machine?

No. Grind-by-Sync is a Mahlkönig ecosystem feature and works with the Mahlkönig Xenia espresso machine or the Mahlkönig Sync Scale. With other machines, the E64 WS runs as a Grind-by-Weight grinder without automatic grind-size adjustment – the core feature stays usable in every setup.

How does the electronic grind-size adjustment work?

Burr distance is set via a sensor-controlled motor (Disc Distance Detection, DDD). The display shows the distance in microns, and changes are stepless via button press. A one-micron change corresponds to roughly a one-second difference in extraction time. Zero-point calibration is tool-free and guided through the display.

Do SSP 64 mm burrs fit the E64 WS?

Yes. The E64 WS uses the same 64mm grinding chamber as the Mahlkönig X64 SD, and SSP confirms compatibility for its 64mm lineup – High Uniformity, Multipurpose and Lab Sweet. SSP burrs are around 0.1 mm thicker than the originals: recalibrate the zero point after fitting them, which on the E64 WS is tool-free and guided through the display. Important to know: Mahlkönig notes that fitting non-original burrs may affect the manufacturer's warranty. The SSP 64 mm burrs are in our range – letting you fine-tune the grinder's flavour profile for sweeter or more even extractions.

Can I use the E64 WS single-dose?

No. According to tests, retention is around 4 grams – more than dedicated single-dose grinders like the Varia VS6 or the Weber EG-1, but within range for a hopper-first grinder with a built-in scale. If you work single-dose consistently with frequent bean changes, you're better served by a dedicated single-dose grinder. The E64 WS is primarily designed for ongoing use with one bean.

How quickly is the E64 WS delivered in Switzerland?

2 to 4 business days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. Click and Collect in Bern and Zürich. Financing via Heylight is available.

Can I see the E64 WS before buying?

Yes. In our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich Oerlikon (Hagenholzstrasse 50b), the E64 WS is in daily use. Grind-by-Weight, the electronic grind-size adjustment and the Sync behaviour can't really be conveyed through photos. Bringing your own beans is welcome.

Where can I buy the Mahlkönig E64 WS in Switzerland?

At Coffee Coaching Club, as a partner of Mahlkönig. We carry the Mahlkönig range including the Sync Scale and accessories. Order via coffeecoachingclub.ch, by phone during business hours, or in our showrooms in Bern and Zürich.

Roastery tip

We've had the E64 WS running in our showroom since its launch. What keeps impressing us: dose consistency over weeks. Once programmed, 18.0 grams really stays 18.0 grams – even as the bean changes over the course of a bag. Our Cozy Chocolate shows a dense, round chocolate note with balanced body, thanks to the SD64 grinding character. Nutty Delight runs reliably, with the dose staying constant through the week. For a fruitier profile to discover: Wild Peach – the peach note comes through clearly. That's our recommendation, one of many.
