La Marzocco Linea Mini R – Dual Boiler Espresso Machine with Saturated Group Head

Six people are sitting at the table after dinner. Someone says, «another cappuccino?» and everyone nods. Up, over to the machine, flip the paddle — and the 3-litre steam boiler delivers. For the first cappuccino, the third, the sixth. The milk turns silky and glossy, the cool-touch wand stays cool on the outside, you work calmly and focused, and at some point someone at the table asks: «where did you learn that?» A smile — and the quiet happiness of getting to experience it every day.

The Linea Mini R — many simply call it the «Linea Mini» — is the machine that emerges when La Marzocco condenses its most iconic design — the Linea Classic, found in the best cafés in the world — down to fit on a kitchen counter. Handmade in Scarperia near Florence, with the same saturated group head, the same rotary pump, the same paddle. Just more compact. And with a few things that never existed in commercial settings: brew-by-weight via software license, app control, a pre-infusion that cleans itself.

The saturated group head — and why it makes the difference

Inside the Mini R, the brew boiler and brew head merge into a single, directly heated block — 0.17 litres, tiny, quick to react. Unlike E61 machines, where hot water circulates through a large metal mass and needs twenty minutes to stabilise, the Mini R reacts to temperature changes within seconds. The first shot in the morning has the same body and the same sweetness as the fifth after dinner. No cold group head ruining the first pull, no slow warm-up phase testing patience.

What that means for the taste: coffee contains over 800 compounds. Which of them end up in your cup depends on how steady the temperature stays during extraction. If it swings by two degrees, you taste it — the shot turns uneven, the sweetness fades, unbalanced fruity or bitter notes move to the foreground. The saturated group head eliminates these swings. In our roastery, we observe that saturated group heads deliver a more refined aroma profile than E61 — regardless of the heating system. Others see it differently, and that's fine. Our opinion is one of many.

The 3-litre steam boiler — cappuccino power without end

This is where the Mini R parts ways with the Micra and with practically any other machine this size. Three litres of steam boiler mean: you can froth milk for six cappuccinos in a row without the steam power dropping off. The milk turns microfoam and glossy, the foam has that silky texture you know from good cafés — dense enough for latte art, light enough to bind with the espresso. The Performance Touch steam wand is insulated and stays cool on the outside, even after the fourth round of frothing. No burnt fingers, no scorched milk on the wand.

Anyone who mainly drinks espresso and rarely froths milk will find the Micra enough. Anyone who regularly hosts guests, who loves cappuccino, who sometimes pushes the machine for half an hour straight — the Mini R is built for that. This isn't a question of better or worse. It's a question of what you need.

Brew-by-weight — with your Acaia Lunar

Since March 2026 there's a way that's the most elegant solution for many Mini R setups: connecting a Acaia Lunar via Bluetooth to the Mini R, buy the Connected Scale license once for around 100 euros through the La Marzocco app, and the firmware update runs in five minutes. After that, your Lunar works like a La Marzocco Connected Scale. Set it: stop at 36 grams. Flip the paddle, the built-in shot timer runs along, and when the scale registers 36 grams, the machine stops the pour — with a predictive algorithm that accounts for drip-off. No guessing, no reacting, no «was that enough?». The shot today tastes like the shot yesterday, because the variables are the same.

Important for compatibility: the upgrade works with the Acaia Lunar 2021 in the USB-C version (serial number AL008XXXXXXXX or higher). Older Lunar models with a micro-USB port cannot run the upgrade — the internal electronics are different. Anyone who buys a compatible Lunar from us gets two tools in one: a full-featured espresso scale with app, flow-rate display and all Acaia functions for any machine — and, after the license upgrade, Connected Scale functionality for the Mini R. Alternatively, the La Marzocco Connected Scale is also available as a standalone product directly from La Marzocco. For most Mini R buyers, the Lunar route is the more pragmatic entry point — more flexibility, the same functionality. Which route suits you, we're happy to work out together.

That sounds like a technical feature. What it really is: freedom. Focus goes to the bean, to the grind size, to what happens in the cup — instead of the stopwatch. Extraction by weight ratio (1:2 as a starting point, not as a law) is the most reliable way to a consistent result. The Mini R makes that path as easy as possible.

Pre-infusion, paddle, app

The two-valve pre-infusion system gently wets the coffee puck before full pressure builds — La Marzocco calls it «Soft Saturation». The water penetrates the grounds evenly, channeling is prevented before it can start, and the extraction becomes rounder and sweeter. The flow restrictor cleans itself — a detail worth more in everyday use than it sounds.

The paddle is inspired by the classic La Marzocco Linea machines — a mechanical lever with electronic pre-infusion. Flipping it, you feel the resistance, the weight, the moment extraction begins. That's a tactile feel no button can replace.

The La Marzocco Home app controls brew temperature, steam pressure, auto-on schedule, pre-infusion, auto-backflush and rinse mode. Pump pressure can be adjusted directly on the machine — accessible from the top, without removing any panels.

Who the Mini R is for

The Mini R is the machine for anyone who loves espresso and milk drinks equally. The Micra is more compact, heats up faster, and built for the pure espresso moment in the morning. The Mini R is bigger, heavier, has a huge steam boiler and noticeably more room under the portafilter — for large cups, for scales, for a workflow that can breathe. Anyone weighing the choice and not sure: our Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3 comparison can help.

Nobody needs a La Marzocco. But anyone with a Mini R on the counter knows what happens: getting up in the morning and looking forward to coffee. Having guests over without getting nervous. Pressing the paddle, hearing the rotary pump hum quietly, smelling the aromas rising from the portafilter, and for a moment everything is exactly right. That's not a rational decision. It's an emotional one. And it's entirely fine. Whoever wants it knows why.

Order directly online

The Linea Mini R can be ordered directly in our webshop — unlike the Micra, you don't need personal advice beforehand here (but you can, if you want to). Delivery across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein in 2–4 working days. For machines this size we recommend pickup — Click and Collect in Bern, Gerberngasse 44 and Zürich, Hagenholzstrasse 50b. There you can see the Mini R live beforehand, move the paddle, experience the steam. An introductory course is included with purchase — around 60 minutes, in which we go through extraction philosophy together and build your personal espresso ritual, which afterwards takes around 5 minutes. Financing via Heylight possible.

We're a partner of La Marzocco and a coffee roastery — for questions before, during and after your purchase: office@coffeecoachingclub.ch or by phone during business hours.

What goes with it

The grinder decides the taste in the cup — more than any machine does. Over 800 volatile compounds dissipate rapidly after grinding, and what makes up your retronasal aroma experience begins with the particle size and consistency of the grounds. For anyone wanting a reliable, precise grinder: Varia coffee grinders — we are the exclusive Swiss importer. Anyone wanting maximum precision: Weber Workshops EG-1 or Option-O Lagom P80. For brew-by-weight with a Connected Scale license: Acaia Lunar in the USB-C version. Tamper and puck prep: Normcore affordable (exclusive Swiss importer) or the Weber Workshops Really Nice Tamper. For airtight bean storage: Airscape. For precise coffee water: Apax Labs mineral concentrates — exclusive Swiss importer. Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Mini R and the Micra?

The Micra is more compact (29 cm wide vs. 35.5 cm), lighter (19 kg vs. 32 kg), heats up faster (~5 minutes vs. ~20 minutes) and is built for the pure espresso moment. The Mini R has a noticeably larger steam boiler (3.0 L vs. 1.6 L), a bigger water tank (3.5 L vs. 2 L), more room under the portafilter, brew-by-weight compatibility and a dial for temperature. Detailed comparison: Micra vs. Mini R vs. GS3.

Can I see the Mini R before buying?

Yes. The Mini R is on display in our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44) and Zürich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b). See it live, move the paddle, experience the steam.

How does brew-by-weight work with the Mini R?

Since March 2026, an Acaia Lunar 2021 with USB-C connection (serial number AL008XXXXXXXX or higher) can become a full brew-by-weight scale for the Mini R via a Connected Scale license — a one-time payment of around 100 euros through the La Marzocco app. The license is installed via a firmware upgrade in the Acaia app, and the process takes about five minutes. After that, the Lunar communicates with the Mini R via Bluetooth: you set the target weight, flip the paddle, and the machine stops automatically at the target weight — with a predictive algorithm that accounts for drip-off. Older Lunar models with micro-USB cannot be upgraded. Alternatively, the La Marzocco Connected Scale is also available as a standalone product directly from La Marzocco. Without a license or Connected Scale, the Mini R works entirely normally: you stop the pour manually via the paddle.

How fast does the Mini R heat up?

Around 20 minutes for full thermal stability — typical for a dual boiler in this class. Through the La Marzocco Home app, an auto-on schedule can be set so the machine is ready exactly when you get up. No waiting time in the morning.

Can I connect the Mini R to the water supply?

Yes, optionally. The hybrid mode with mains-pressure pre-infusion is one of the Mini R's technical highlights. The water tank stays usable even with a direct water connection. For the setup, we're happy to advise personally — especially with water filtration there are a few things to consider.

How long does delivery take?

2–4 working days across Switzerland and to Liechtenstein. For machines this size we recommend Click and Collect in Bern or Zürich — or personal delivery with a walkthrough, which we discuss before purchase.

Where can I buy the La Marzocco Linea Mini R in Switzerland?

Directly online at Coffee Coaching Club — partner of La Marzocco and coffee roastery. Via coffeecoachingclub.ch or in our showrooms in Bern and Zürich. Introductory course included, delivery across Switzerland.

Roastery tip

The Mini R, with its large steam boiler, shows its strength especially with milk drinks. When we make cappuccinos in the showroom, we reach for Nutty Delight — nutty, velvety, round, and with frothed milk it becomes something that feels like liquid nougat. As espresso on its own: Cozy Chocolate — dense, chocolatey, with a warmth that lingers after the first sip. The thermal stability of the saturated group head draws out of both beans the sweetness and body we built in during roasting. Anyone in the mood to discover something fruity: Wild Peach with a lively acidity that surprises. That's our recommendation, one of many.
