In the GS3 steam valve, the lever works against a stainless steel counterplate. It absorbs the force with which you press the lever and transmits it evenly into the valve body. As long as it is flat, steaming feels solid and precise – a clean pressure point, no wobbling.
The plate is position 4 of the steam valve assembly and a classic wear part. Over the years, grooves form in the contact area, the edges wear in and the lever develops play. The valve then no longer closes at the same point and, in the worst case, a faint hiss remains because the contact pressure is no longer applied evenly. Part number B.1.004/4.

The plate sits on the steam valve, i.e. on an assembly that carries steam. Disconnect the machine from the mains, let it cool down completely and depressurise it before loosening anything. We deliberately don't give step-by-step instructions here: if the assembly is put back together incorrectly, the valve opens uncontrollably. If you're not familiar with the lever mechanism, leave the job to a workshop.
For anyone with a GS3 whose steam lever has developed play, and for workshops that replace the worn individual parts when servicing the steam valve instead of swapping the complete valve.
From our workshop
Whenever we have a steam valve open in Bern and Zurich, we lay the individual parts out on a light-coloured cloth in the order they were removed. The positions of the assembly look similar, and if something is fitted the wrong way round, the lever will never feel right again. For the test afterwards: a cappuccino made with Cozy Chocolate. Our routine, not a manufacturer's requirement.
Returns excluded
Service parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are procured specifically for your order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on the machine. So before ordering, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick line and we'll clarify the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.
No. Only the counterplate, position 4, is supplied. The lever, valve body and gaskets are separate parts.
Often yes, if the plate is worn. Just as often, a worn lever or seat is also involved. A service kit for the steam lever covers both – ask us which one matches your serial number.
It fits the common production years, yes. If in doubt, send us the serial number.
Because the plate is permanently exposed to hot steam and condensate. Any other material would soon be corroded at this point.
Yes. You'll find us in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Bring along your machine's serial number or the old part, and we'll compare them right at the counter.
