Single-Circuit Espresso Machine: One Boiler, One Circuit
The single-circuit machine is the simplest design among portafilter espresso machines – and for many households, the most sensible one. What it can do, what it can't, and where the common reservations get it wrong.
What does single-circuit actually mean?
One boiler, one water circuit. The same water serves both the shot and the steam, running through the same path. Because espresso needs around 90 to 94 degrees and steam around 110 to 130, the boiler has to switch between the two jobs. That's exactly where the only real limitation of this design comes from: you can't pull a shot and steam milk at the same time.

How does making a cappuccino work with a single-circuit machine?
- Let the machine heat up, preheat the portafilter.
- Pull the espresso – the boiler is at brewing temperature.
- Switch to steam. Depending on the machine, it takes thirty seconds to a minute and a half until there's enough pressure.
- Steam the milk.
- For the next shot, the boiler has to cool back down. That happens faster if you run water through the group.
For one or two cups in the morning, that's a non-issue. For four milk drinks in a row, it gets tedious – that's when a two-circuit machine is more convenient.
What speaks for the single-circuit machine?
- Heat-up time. A boiler with a small volume reaches temperature quickly. For the Rancilio Silvia, around 12 minutes is often cited – a rough figure from trade literature, not a manufacturer specification. Models with a heavy E61 group head take longer even as single-circuit machines.
- Space. Less technology means a smaller housing. Under a wall cabinet, that's often the number that decides.
- Price. Noticeably cheaper than comparably built two-circuit machines or dual boilers.
- Power consumption. A small boiler that isn't kept permanently at steam temperature needs less.
- No cooling flush. The procedure that owners of two-circuit machines know well doesn't exist here at all.
What speaks against it?
- Switching and waiting as soon as milk enters the picture.
- Steam output. Small boilers deliver less steam. That's enough for one cup; for half a litre of milk, it gets tight.
- Temperature stability. It fluctuates more than with a dual boiler. A PID, which many models now have, calms that down noticeably – but you usually still can't dial it in to the exact degree the way you can with a dual boiler.
Who is a single-circuit machine the right choice for?
For everyone who mainly drinks black espresso. And for everyone with a realistic view of their own morning: if you buy a large machine because you make eight cappuccinos twice a year, you're paying all year for two Sundays.
The often-repeated line that "single-circuit machines are for beginners" isn't true. The design decides convenience, not quality. A cleanly ground, well-dosed espresso from a single-circuit machine beats any sloppy shot from a machine costing five times as much.
