Frequently Asked Questions About Specialty Coffee
What does «specialty coffee» actually mean?
It describes green coffee that meets defined quality criteria and is traded with traceable origin information. Since 2024 the Specialty Coffee Association assesses it through the Coffee Value Assessment rather than a single cupping score alone. We have written this up in detail, with sources, in our German article on the topic.
Is specialty coffee always better than supermarket coffee?
It is grown, processed and roasted with more care, and you can usually trace where it comes from. Whether you like it more is a separate question – that one only your own cup answers.
Does a higher score mean I will enjoy it more?
No. A score describes the quality of the green coffee as assessed by trained cuppers. Roast profile, grind, water and your own preference decide what ends up tasting good to you.
Where do your beans come from?
We buy green coffee with traceable origin and roast it ourselves in Switzerland. What is currently in the roastery is listed in our shop.
What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta?
They are two different species. Arabica generally grows at higher altitudes and tends toward more acidity and floral notes; Canephora, usually sold as Robusta, is hardier, grows lower down and brings more body and often nutty, cocoa-like notes. Neither is inherently better.
Can I taste your coffee before buying?
Yes. Come by our showrooms in Bern, Gerberngasse 44, Monday to Saturday from 10 to 18, or in Zurich, Hagenholzstrasse 50b, Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 17.
