Olympia Express Puck Prep Tool 54mm – Dosing Funnel, Leveler and Tamper for the Maximatic, Swiss Made

The funnel sits on the Maximatic's 54mm portafilter, grinding begins – and for the first time in a while, every grain lands exactly where it should, instead of on the drip tray or the counter beside it. Funnel off, leveler ring on, one turn, tamper disc on top, a brief press – the puck is ready, level on top and underneath, before you even flip the switch and the pump takes over.

What makes this tool special

Three tools, one motion

Freshly ground coffee never falls perfectly evenly into the basket – small mounds, dense corners, a slope to one side. If you tamp straight over that, the surface looks even, but the distribution underneath stays uneven. During extraction, the water then takes the path of least resistance, and the espresso turns bitter in one spot and thin in another – regardless of whether a pump or a lever builds the pressure. The Puck Prep Tool cleanly separates the three steps: the funnel guides the grounds into the 54mm basket without loss, the leveler ring distributes the surface with a simple turn, the tamper disc then presses down evenly. No readjusting, no extra tapping.

Swiss Manufacture, Olympia Style

Polished stainless steel, engraved Olympia logo, all made in Schwanden, in the canton of Glarus – in the same workshop where the Maximatic itself is built. No superfluous shapes, just three tools that do their job together. Typically Olympia: understated and built to last.

Three routes to a clean puck – compared honestly

Nobody needs a third tool for puck preparation – you want it, or you do perfectly fine without it. For those who are interested, we offer several honest options at different price levels.

Affordable, piece by piece: Normcore

For those who prefer to put together a funnel, tamper, and, if needed, a WDT tool separately: the Normcore Collection covers every step solidly and affordably. Functionally, it does the same job, just in three pieces instead of one.

Swiss Original: Olympia Express

This tool right here. Funnel, leveler and tamper cast as one, made in the same factory as your Maximatic. For those who want to keep their setup consistent – machine, accessories and aesthetics from the same house.

Premium Level: Weber Workshops

For those who prefer separate precision tools: the Weber Workshops Dosing Cup and Tamper Collection offers individual pieces at a higher price level, plus the Moonraker, a rotating WDT tool for anyone who also wants to distribute by needle before leveling and tamping.

Our opinion: for most Maximatic owners, the combination of funnel, leveler and tamper is more than enough. Anyone who also wants to distribute every grain by needle simply combines this tool with a WDT tool from the Normcore or Weber Workshops collection – the two aren't mutually exclusive.

Who this tool is made for

For Maximatic owners who want to simplify their prep without compromising on consistency – whether the machine runs on a switch or a pump makes no difference to the puck in the basket. Also for anyone who simply wants a piece of Swiss manufacturing to match their machine on the counter. Anyone who currently works with separate tools and wants to keep doing so loses nothing – both paths lead to a clean puck.

Accessories that fit the Maximatic setup

Crucial for grind quality: our Grinder Collection. For precise dosing to the tenth of a gram: Acaia scales. Anyone who also wants to distribute every grain by needle before leveling and tamping: Normcore WDT tool affordable, Weber Workshops Moonraker as the premium option.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly does the Puck Prep Tool do?

It combines three steps in one tool: the funnel guides the grounds cleanly into the 54mm basket, the leveler ring distributes the surface evenly, the tamper disc then presses it down. Not a needle-based WDT tool, but a dosing-leveling-tamping combination in polished stainless steel.

Do I really need this tool?

Need is a strong word. If you just want to make good espresso with the Maximatic, you can also get by with a separate tamper. But if you want to dose, level and tamp in one motion and get visibly more even pucks, you'll notice a clear benefit.

Does the tool also fit portafilters other than the Maximatic's?

The funnel and leveler ring are precisely matched to the Maximatic's 54mm baskets. On other machines with a 54mm basket, the fit depends on the exact basket geometry – the tool works most reliably on the machine it was designed for.

How do I clean the Puck Prep Tool?

Tap it briefly after each use, rinse it with warm water if needed, and let it dry completely before putting it away. On a tamping mat or a stand, it stays within easy reach.

Where can I buy the Puck Prep Tool or see it in person?

Online at coffeecoachingclub.ch. In person at our showrooms in Bern (Gerberngasse 44, 3011 Bern) and Zurich (Hagenholzstrasse 50b, 8050 Zurich).

Roastery Tip

A well-prepared puck gives its best once the basics are already in place: first, fresh beans, then a grinder that grinds evenly, then a stable brew ratio. Anyone who has these three points under control gains one last degree of consistency in the basket with the Puck Prep Tool – on the Maximatic, this shows up especially in the heat exchanger's aroma profile. For beans to pair with the Maximatic, we recommend the Nutty Delight, full-bodied and harmonious. Our opinion, one of many.
