The seal on the heating element – not the heater itself
Where a heating element is fitted into a boiler, the feed-through has to be sealed. An O-ring takes care of that. It is a purely mechanical part: no current, no electronics, no function other than sealing. That is exactly why we sell it online, while we do not sell the heating element itself online.
On the Porta Via the installation space is tight, and the ring takes the full temperature of the heating element. It is one of the parts you replace every time the heating element is removed – not check, but replace.
When it is due
Moisture or a limescale ring around the feed-through of the heating element is one sign. Because there is electricity nearby, this is not something to keep an eye on, but something to have checked.
The second sign is not a symptom but an occasion: if the heating element is being removed and refitted anyway, the old ring can no longer be used. It has settled against the sealing surface and will not find the same position again.

Important for installation
The installation point is on the pressurised boiler and right next to a live component. This is no place for experiments: the job belongs in the hands of a qualified technician who disconnects the machine from the mains, depressurises it and lets it cool down. We deliberately do not give installation instructions here.

Our rule in Bern and Zurich: a sealing ring that has once sat against a hot surface is not reused – even if it still looks fine. It has deformed, and a second installation never finds the same position. For a part that costs a few centimes, it's the easiest decision of the day. This is our own practice, not a manufacturer requirement. After putting the machine back into operation, we let it heat through twice and then pull an espresso with the Cozy Chocolate.
No returns
Original spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are procured specifically for each order and cannot be resold after being installed or test-fitted on the machine. So please check your machine's model, year of manufacture and serial number before ordering – or drop us a line and we'll check the fit together. Your rights in the case of defective goods remain unaffected.

Can I replace the ring myself?
We don't recommend it. The spot is on the boiler and right next to the heating element – that belongs in expert hands.
Do I have to replace it every time it is removed?
Yes, that's how we do it. A used ring rarely seals reliably a second time in the same spot.
