In the LEVA’s lever group, the piston moves up and down inside the cylinder. The guide in the cylinder head keeps it on track: it holds the piston centred, prevents it from tilting sideways and makes sure the piston seals sit evenly all the way round. That is exactly why it determines how smooth the lever feels.
Once the guide wears in, the piston develops play. The lever feels spongy, scratches at one point or suddenly needs more force. And because a tilted piston loads its seals on one side, short seal life is often not the seal’s fault but a sign of a worn guide. Part number A.5.074.

Replacing it means dismantling the lever group. In operation, the lever’s spring force acts there, and the group carries hot water under pressure. Disconnect the machine from the mains first, let it cool down completely and depressurise it. We deliberately don’t give step-by-step instructions here: an incorrectly assembled lever head is dangerous. This job belongs in experienced hands, and the right puller tool is part of it.
For workshops and experienced LEVA owners who replace not just the seals but the guide as well during a piston service. If you only swap the seals and leave the worn guide in place, you’ll be back at the same point within a year.
From our workshop
When a LEVA comes to us in Bern and Zurich for a piston service, we always replace the guide and seals together. Done separately, the group gets opened twice, and the second round comes sooner than expected. We bridge the time in between with an espresso made from Nutty Delight. That’s our routine, not a manufacturer requirement.
Returns excluded
Spare parts are excluded from exchange and return. They are sourced specifically for each order and cannot be resold once they have been installed or test-fitted on a machine. So before you order, check the model, year of manufacture and serial number of your machine – or drop us a quick message and we’ll work out the fit together. Your rights in the event of defective goods remain unaffected.
No. Only the guide is supplied. We stock seals and service kits separately.
Only with experience on lever machines and the right puller tool. The lever group is under spring tension, and if assembled incorrectly it is dangerous.
A good indicator is short seal life combined with sideways play in the lever. If you’re unsure, write to us and tell us what you’re noticing.
Yes, for the common LEVA versions. If in doubt, send us the serial number and we’ll check in advance.
Yes. You’ll find us in Bern at Gerberngasse 44 and in Zurich at Hagenholzstrasse 50b. Bring your machine’s serial number or the old part with you and we’ll compare them right at the counter.
