With a bottomless portafilter, you can see the extraction directly from below – helpful for identifying channeling and checking the distribution in the puck.

The bottomless portafilter is a good learning tool: Observe how the espresso flows out. If it flows evenly and centrally, the distribution is correct. If it splashes sideways, clean distribution and even tamping will help. This is our recommendation, one of many.
